It's incredible to me that so many human civilizations each found their own unique and ingenious way to conquer the technology of sailing.

I really hope that what I learned about Vikings as a child still holds up. That being... One of their great strengths when voyaging on open seas was not giving a fook. Knowing that the gods had decided their overall fate, they boldly struck out risking it all either blessed to success or damned to failure. True, they had moments where they had to throw loot and slaves in the sea to lighten the load... but hey you win some, you drown some!

@Klaidi Rubiku No other culture created multihull and outrigger boats. Also Austronesians really did invent the maritime boat first. Before any other human culture. During the same time period that the crab claw sail and catamarans were invented by Austronesians, all other humans were still only using rafts, dugout canoes, and coracles. And only in near-shore, lake, and river environments.

Fundamentally, if you're human you'll build near water and if you live by water you'll want to take advantage of that water to move things. The Austronesians are unique in that their civilization was basically built on their sailing technique.

@Klaidi Rubiku they had no need to advance. They had trees as strong as iron to craft their weapons. meaning that developing metal weapons would be a detriment to their power. They had tropical fruits and spices so there was no need to search out better food across the world, and they never had enough land that serious terraforming efforts would reap a serious benefit to their culture meaning no large buildings or agricultural infrastructure needed to be invented.

Have you read about Thor Heyerdahl? He had some crazy but logically compelling theories on how ancient mariners sailed way greater distances much earlier than thought, explaining Noah, ancient astronaut theories, Garden of Eden, rises of civilisations, mesoamerican religions, the Easter Island mystery, ancient copper trade, and so much more by refining our understanding of sailing and distances. For example, ships of Columbus were really bad compared to earlier raft designs for long routes. They offered cargo space and weaponry, good for war but comparing to simple reed construction, were barely seaworthy. He said he could with a reed raft, sail from India to Mexico, and basicly proved it. Amazing.

Fun fact: I dropped my keys into the Pacific coast of Thailand once, and they were actually returned. More fun fact: The Pacific is literally its own hemisphere. If you could dig a hole through the center of the Earth off the coast of Thailand or Vietnam, you would still come out in the Pacific off the western coast of South America.

Due to the procession of the constellations there would have been changes to which star was actually Polaris at the time and Crux would also not have pointed to South
@BadWebDiver

Incorrect. Polaris is always stationary at the north celestial.pole, and the southern cross rotates around the south celestial pole. You can always find north or south with them.

What's amazing is how we in modern society have continued to use the same astro-navigational techniques. For example, the SR-71 had a viewing window on the top of the plane to allow computerized navigation by the stars, even at speeds over mach 3. It is a deep indicator of the ingenuity of humanity that people were able to astro-navigate so long ago.

So, uh, any particular reason you're using traditional Polynesian pronunciations/word for Hawaii and Rapa Nui, but not Aotearoa?
@theghostofspookwagen4715
@theghostofspookwagen4715 4 года назад
Hawaii and Rapa Nui are their English names, or at least names that are as recognizable to English speakers as English names. Aotearoa is a Maori name, that's like him using "Nippon" instead of Japan whenever talking about the Japanese.

@@theghostofspookwagen4715 It's one of the official names of the country (the "officially" preferred one, in fact) and it's used by other Pacific people too. But, most of all, it ties into one of the points they were making - it means "(Land of the) Long White Cloud."
@reaganwang1473
@reaganwang1473 4 года назад
Yeah, it feels weird that a series focusing on the Polynesian side of things would choose the European way of saying it. Especially since New Zealand is a lame name and "The Land of the Long White Cloud" is a lot cooler.

Kind of reminds me of navigating when I used to do canoe camping in the Boundary Waters. I mean, I did keep my map at my feet the whole time and kept turning it to face the direction I was going - no memorization here. But things like landmarks, weather. I have an almost one-dimensional view of the shore, and I have to interpret the the slight curves and depth perception tricks to match it to the two-dimensional birds eye view map. And we did have many songs and mnemonic devices for how to canoe and how to be safe while camping.
