I'm still fighting to remain alive and finish my build. I have wondered where you went. It's been a long time Kalvin. I made a go-fund-me. It did extremely well. $61k my goal was only 20k but people kept sending money. Took 11 days. I shut the go fund me down in good conscious. I have plenty to finish my build. Paid up a lot of medical bills, bought my wife her own home and property. Now when I pass she will be secure and safe. It's so good to see you again Kalvin. I should have my build done very soon. We all make mistakes, I've had similar stuff happen to me. I lived in a snow state for many years, and the name of the game there was to hide all the rust..

I don't know if you see this but I'm currently in the same situation with my altezza I imported. Car looked perfect but the rust holes were filled with body filler and the rust is everywhere. I gave it to a shop for rust repair and I've currently payed them for 40 hours of rust repair and welding. I feel like anyone who is thinking of importing a car from Japan needs to see this video because so many cars are rotted through. Much love man

Got my 92 GTR just about a year ago, I watched so many of your videos just before going and purchasing mine. I paid 28.5 for mine with 114k on it. does need some body work from a warped fender on the passenger side from a fender bender in Japan and needs paint, she has surface rust on the top of the windshield and back window as well as where the door hinges are. I'm kind of scared to know how bad it is at the hinges but so far this car has impressed me for being 30 years old. Thank you for all your help and hard work! I'll be watching till it's finished and ur onto ur next project!

It probably would have been more economical to take the L and have it sold for parts but this restoration is truely epic and watching it progress is cool as hell. When you finish it, you're gonna have something that almost literally has your blood sweat and tears poured into it and I'm sure you wouldn't trade that for anything. Wish you all the best

I think what really gets me kalvin is the amount of people that aren't educated enough on getting cars in general. The type of people that haven't had the due diligence to know how to fully inspect a car even if its at a kum and go 5 minutes away from their house. This is why it is so hard for me to trust people looking at a car that I would like to buy for such a large amount of money like with you and your GTR. I bet these kinds of things happen all of the time. In fact they do and it is talked about on japan forums quite often especially with the rust problem. Easiest way for them to sell the cars quickest is to quickly tape the car and do a half-decent or maybe even a really nice paint job, then completely forget about everything underneath. You really can’t tell how severe rust is if you’re just looking at the surface. You found a lot rust inside the frame and stuff. I bought my R32 around the same time and have since taken car of the most sever rust (after getting scammed by body shop). It was an R rating because of the hood latch bracket was bent, but it was surprisingly clean.

So glad to see your progression with your restoration build. You are basically going full Garage Yoshida and Built By Legends on this one. Hell yeah, super excited for you to have your R32 GTR at the shop now. That should make things much easier to work on with all that space. I bought mine a little over a year ago and shortly after, I stumbled upon your videos of the massive rust issue. Scared the heck out of me. Hopefully others listen to your advice because the fact that it was $25-26k was a big red flag. In this video you kept saying you felt like the seller wasn't aware, but I beg to differ. If he thought it was in good shape, he wouldn't have listed it $10-15k lower than the average market price for an R32 GTR. These guys do this for a living, so they know what they're buying, and what they're selling. Wish you the best of luck and keep at it. Love the content.

Hey man, Don’t feel bad. I too was caught up in the supra dream and was excited, When I bought my first MK 4 Supra GZ Aerotop. The seller(dealership) lied about the condition too. The car’s roof was leaking and it also needed valve stem seals.

Been following you for years, since before the 240 was blue and you were at your parent’s place. I just want to say that you’re reaching a lot of people with this, juiceboxforyou a channel from Ireland with a rusty 86 restoration mentioned you and I got to comment who you were! Keep it up!

I got my GT-R from that website too but at the beginning on 2020. I asked why so cheap. He flat out told me about it being rusty but the pics made it look like it was simply sun damage on the paint and some surface rust underneath. Nope. I'm missing parts and need some frame rails. That's why I keep bugging you about the templates so I can buy a set from you. 😉

As a hobby importer over the last 10 years, my biggest advice is getting a buyer you can trust. Majority of these companies buy direct from auction, therefore they’re already skimming for profits.

I’m in the process of sourcing an exporter for my car in Japan so have been meeting with people in person to do a vibe check. I went to visit a popular export company as one of the contenders to ship my car, he took me around his storage lot to show me where my car would be stored and picked out this R33 GTR, fully built, wide body, etc, to flaunt to me; I immediately noticed ruined strut tops on the car which had been bondo’d over. Upon acknowledging this, the guy denied to my face that the car had rust problems, even when I compared to a clean example in the same storage unit he said “we do not have rusted out cars”. This to me wrote off any possibility of using this company for looking after my car and exporting it. As, if they’re gonna lie to my face, imagine what will happen when I’m overseas trying to negotiate any issues with them. The point is, it can be very hard to do proper due diligence. I’ve seen locals get screwed when buying cars out here. For all you guys wanting to buy a car from Japan, really your only option is to use one of the reputable guys and pay their price premiums, unless you can come out here and observe for yourself; at which point you may as well have just paid the premium.

I worked for an import car yard here in Australia, we got a lot of our imports through Hong Kong and New Zealand, and had a few snow or salt damaged cars (these were from Japan). It was crazy to me how much snow and salt could thoroughly damage a car like that (being an Aussie we don't get snow where I'm from) These cars were terrible inside and out. Rust almost everywhere, underneath panels and mold inside and out. Your car looks exactly like one of those "snow" cars. I feel for you man, we got shafted on a few cars ourselves even back in the early 2000s.

Incompetence is really high with "businesses" selling JDM cars. Most have no idea what they are looking or talking about and just jumping in on the hype because these cars are just getting more and more expensive.

Feel your pain, I bought I higher priced gc8 impreza. Which looked to be in amazing condition with lots of great extras. I had to put New engine and gearbox in within 150 miles. I had been driving it like a granny too. Then some kid crashed into it. I've done less then 1000 miles in 2 years 😢 it's still waiting to be finished.

Another thing everyone needs to note. 99% of all importers bring it as roll on. Which means it's getting hit by salt part of or the whole trip. Which means even minor rust will become major rust by the time it gets through customs. So also make sure your importer fully detailed your car. My 33 was fully detailed and cleaned after the importer got the car state side. Another thing about importers is they inspect the car at auction. You can also have vendors like Garage Defend get everything done for you in Japan and you do state side.

28k USD for a 32 is actually cheap for a GTR, they go anywhere up to 100k+ AUD. but for something as totaled as this that's just criminal

Majority of the cars you see for 30, 40, 50k are the same condition under the surface. I always tell people these are $10-25k cars MAX. Unless it's highly modified, fully restored, etc. Hype really destroyed the market. Note: I had a skyline, and I grew up around them. (I met you at h2oi with my bagged black rb25 swapped gtst)

Kalvin, as far as getting a title, look up "vermont title loophole" I have titled two cars with this method each for about $400. Not 100% sure if it would work with an import but i think its worth a look.

Even Know you got burnt on this deal. The experience, and skills that you have learned, buy doing this car yourself is invaluable. It gonna help not only future build, but your Business as well. not to mention the content is awesome on this build. So in the end, it kinda worked out, and is a win win for you.

At least you gave great advice about having someone you trust to look at the car! Import cars from Japan is a big no no, it's an island on the pacific no matter where the person lived there is always issues with rust even if it's kept indoors, it's like UK same problem, a car specially this age if you think it's rust free it was either properly restored or it's already too late for that, I know because I used to live in an island too and a car that is more than 20 years old it's always a rust bucket unless it was properly restored and maintained, what I mean with properly restored is disassemble the whole car and clear all the rust, the same thing you are doing now but if it was done sooner it wouldn't need to be disassembled to this extent, hope I shed light on you or anyone who is trying to get their hands on a good classic...
