@@tacojohn9this is cracking me up...my ex grew up in NH & ME. He lost his accent decades ago, but when he is tipsy, he says it "New Hampshah" BUT when he is truly drunk, he forgets to pretend and just has his regular Montana accent, ie "Midwestern neutral." (Yes there are wacky Midwestern accents but y'all know what I mean). Personally, I like to pronounce it with a hard "p" but I'm annoying.

I never saw the REI version of Maranda In The Wild as a REI gear commercial. I guess that is how REI saw it and realized that it wasn't turning into that. Kudos to REI for telling the team that things weren't going the way they hoped and knew that this show could do more and mean more to people than just a commercial.

What an engaging guy, I suppose as a producer he knows how to tell stories, enjoyed the way he explained things, even throwing in a relatively obscure Shakespeare reference. Loved his story about the guy in the tee shirt, That happens when you hike sometimes, though not necessarily like this one you have a "Wait, what a minute"?!? moment. Some things can't always be explained.

Kind of one of those questions that if it wasn't true they would immediately answer "no." but if it is true they can play games like this - which is fun, don't mind me - but be just in their decision that you have no need to know. Maybe Ranier's gay, which would fit too, how they can be roommates and don't give me the "non of your business" they're putting the conversation out there.

While I’m not a youtuber more than very casually with a once in a great while upload of a funny podcast clip or something interesting I caught on a hike, climb, run, or trip out on the water, I can say for sure that content creation definitely IS a full time job. It’s more like two full time jobs. I already have a full time day job in cybersecurity and my outdoors adventures, and I was also doing podcast editing and production and research full time for a while (and I will be again soon). Anyone who thinks that is all fun and games or not a real job is nuts. That sh is hard af. Mad props to you both for doing everything you do!! This was a great episode, Kyle.

Rainer's comments about the people of that village in China reminds me of the ending of the book The Martian when Mark Watney talks about people all over the world coming together to save him. There really are alot of good people in this world.

I met a "spirit of the mountain" dude once. I was trail running for a few days, doing 6 hour hikes in 3 hours. My final day was doing a 12-hour hike to the top of a mountain and I'm in good shape so 10 hours. I'm near the top after a 2 hour final ascent steep scramble, it was 30C/85F that day, but at the peak is 10C/50F and wind is 70km/45mph up top. I look back down and some dude is just bounding along in just gym shorts and a t-shirt, does the scramble in only 45mins, gets to the top, takes a panoramic with his phone, says 'Hey man!' and goes off again.

I remember getting into a pronunciation argument with my mom after I figured out what she was originally trying to say. She was talking about harassment in the work place but kept saying, "heirissmint," and I didn't get it right away and was like... "what?" ,"hairissmint!".... "heir...hair...what are you talking about?" "You know, heirissmint is like unwanted attention." "OH! You mean harASSment?!" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Aasgard Pass is a tough hike! I can't imagine coming down it in the snow without an ice axe or even gloves! It really is one of the most beautiful hikes you could ever do in spite of the perils! Whatever happened to the t-shirt guy? Was that Qaudzilla, perhaps? 🥶I took my twin sister up to Colchuck Lake for her first backpacking experience for our 66th birthday. We made it nearly half way up Aasgard but my sister was concerned we wouldn't make it back to camp before we couldn't see the cairns as she didn't want to come down those rocks in the dark. The story about the Israeli girl who fell brought back memories when I took a flying leap and became airborne down the Wallace Falls trail by dislodging a rock in one of the ubiquitous tree roots along trail. I also did a face plant in the rocks and still had to hike all the way down to the trailhead. At least my husband carried my fanny pack for me. I can't imagine what that poor girl went through in China with a shattered jaw being carried for miles down a dangerous trail. I sure hope she recovered from the ordeal. Did Rainer ever find out what the outcome was?

I just found Miranda the other day and have watched so many videos. I am a mid 40's mom, who grew up in the woods with my dad. We did so many hikes and somehow I got away from that in mom hood... but I am wanting to get back to it and to get my kids and hubs out there with me.

21:43 authenticness is what gets me to subscribe to other channels, even if it is things that I may not do every day. It is hard though to steer clear of the "trending" things as a channel in general though, but those do not always reflect our authentic self and it is important to stick to the things that are us, even if it does not make us grow as fast as others.

Well, what how did y’all learn to pronounce the capitol of South Dakota? Before my husband and I moved onto the Rosebud Indian Rez we said Pierre like the French word Peter BUT NO it pronounced as peer!! Regina in Saskatchewan is pronounced like the female body part!!

I just watched this last week then learned about Wim Hof and how he hiked up a massive chunk of Everest in just shorts. I wonder if the guy that Rainer is talking about is the same guy. The “Appalachian/appaLAYchian” thing bothers me too as a NYer. People get it in their heads that just because it may be closest the original way of saying that word that it must be the “correct” way. The Appalachians were named after a group of tribes in AL called the Apalachee. If you look up the pronunciation of that word, you’ll find two variations consistent with the two variations of Appalachian. Also, if people have this opinion, I ask them how they say Aluminum. Americans say aluminum b/c early ads wanted to invoke “platinum”, and these methods did not cross the pond to the UK, as they still say AluminIUM. So is everyone in the US wrong? Idts. Many Brits do though!

I grew up in the Tidewater area and we could always tell when someone was new to the area because they pronounced Norfolk, VA, as NOR-FOLK. Most locals pronounced it NAW-F#@K. Doesn't mean one is wrong, it just depends on where you come from.

I find the Appalachian Trail pronunciation disagreements so bizarre. Once on trail, seemed 90% App-uh-lay-shin and 10% App-uh-latch-in. Basically only people from North Carolina said App-uh-latch-in.

Kent, Washington is the butt of many jokes - there was a local TV that labeled Kent as the home of Big Hair Barbie! I moved out of Kent as soon as I graduated from high school.

Aussie here, I’ve always known that Appalachian is pronounced as Appalayshian. The CH is pronounced as a SH. Maybe from US media, it’s been pronounced as that and now it’s forever known as that.
