I do remember Kristi went on her first brand trip and said that Manny was amazing because he kind of took her under his wing and showed her the ropes. I thought that was so cool because she was so excited but she was so nervous. And you really helped her with that.

Lmao the shadeeee when Laura was like ‘unless it’s for one specific thing… like a mascara…’ hahah. I actually worked for benefit cosmetics when the bad girl bang mascara launched and all us girls in store where NOT allowed to know what was launching but where expected to promote/talk about this new amazing thing coming and try to rebook people in the following month for a free mini 10 minute makeovers. The aim of this was to get them back in store once the mascara was launched so they’d try it then they’d love it and buy it. BUT, the amount of pressure we had on our shoulders by not even know what we where going to show them when it eventually would be launched was so stupid. Then would get told off by our manager when we couldn’t book people in for the free makeovers as they had loads of questions too, it was exhausting. I remember so clearly about a week before the huge launch we finally got told it was a black mascara that had some sort of ‘scientific elements in it’ or some BS in it that made lashes super long. I was like 🙂🙂🙂 … so you’re telling me I have SO many FREE mini makeovers booked in next week and am expected to convince every. single. person. that this mascara we have hyped up for weeks is the new shit?…. Surprise suprise people came in, tried the mascara, 70% hated it lmao and we made no commission as they bought nothing. That’s when I knew I needed a new job and to get out of retail LOL.

i have lots of respect for laura not participating with the horses & camels. i would have felt the same. it hurts my heart for the animals- i cry over DOCUMENTARIES about animal cruelty so seeing that would have brought me to tears as well. i prob wouldn’t have handled it correctly & let my emotions take over. tbh i wouldn’t want to work with that brand if they think those activities are normal & ok. you handled it so well & the simple refusal speaks volumes in my opinion.

Laura, I totally agree with you about not riding animals! It breaks my heart when I see animals being exploited. I cant participate in that kind of thing, especially when they look so upset and neglected😓

I just know the mascara slander is Benefit LMAAAAOOOOO. I worked for them at the time and they wouldn’t tell us what they were launching and they were HYPING this shit up!!!! Day of launch comes and my manager and higher ups come in a space suit… and show us mascara…. Girl the face cracks of me and my coworkers 🤣☠️☠️☠️

The gondola thing made me think of a story Bailey Sarian told once. She tagged a brand in an IG post and then her face ended up on a gondola with no payment, no notification or request for permission. She had to fight to get them to take it down. If they can take advantage, they will.

The animal riding was so so refreshing to hear. I absolutely can’t bare to see horses/camels/donkeys still being used for these sorts of things. I’ve always thought I was the ‘dramatic’ one for almost tearing up when I see it in person too, but it’s comforting to see how much it affects others. Strange that even in New York it’s still allowed to happen too with the horse and carriages!

Don’t feel like you’re not appreciating brand trips! It’s all so understandable and relatable for ANYONE who has ever tried to put effort into social media. I’ve been trying build my social media presence (RU-vid and IG) and it can take not only hours, but days to get one thing done! It’s not easy so I completely get it. And appreciate you talking about it.

No shade, but that feeling of being stressed on brand trips is the same throughout most corporate jobs Corporations just squeezing as much as they can.

Laura you're totally right when it comes to the animal abuse. Those poor animals are hurting, hungry, thirsty and sad. Only for some rich tourists to have a moment of fun. There are so many other things people can do on a trip that don't involve animals

It’s sad that she has to constantly say “it’s not that we have it so bad and it’s still fun” bc ppl are so annoying and can’t understand that it’s not what they think it is, when the whole time I was like I would rather not even go if I’m required to go to all these activities and events, that sounds horrible to me personally, no matter where it is. If It’s a work trip it doesn’t count as vacation, flat out. Maybe rock climbing and jet skis sound amazing to some ppl for a work trip but not to me especially if it’s forced participation. Idc if I’m in bora bora if I’m expected to do their festivities all day then have extra work to do on top of it, that doesn’t sound fun or exciting at all. And no down time between the forced activities?? This is an introverts nightmare. I’d feel like i wouldn’t even be able to enjoy the location. This made me not envy these influencer trips at all. If anything, just more reassurance that these brands are just playing into the whole portraying the “fake social media fantasy life” to sell products.

it's great that you guys are sharing this, I think many young kids now want to be influencers because they think "oh I want to have the perks" but don't understand that IT IS an actual job and takes more than just posting on social media.

When people say "you're not working a day in your life if you're having fun!" It's a lie. It's still pressure and work.

I’m also against riding animals like that. For me, it’s just too much and the animals always appear TO ME as sad and helpless. So I totally get it! Same!

The interesting thing is I remember the Smashbox Fiji trip and some of the others are just a blank. The audience isn’t stupid and if you guys aren’t having fun then neither are we and a lot of brands don’t get that. Some of those trips look miserable despite all the beautiful and luxurious experiences.

You know I’ve been watching you both for a while now and it is amazing the amount of growth and change that both of you have gone through. Manny I totally remember when most influencers felt like being on a pr list was a status thing. They may not have said anything specifically but you could tell by their comments and posts that it would bother them if they got cut from a pr list or were not on it. I feel like the beauty community in general has gone through a multitude of changes and growths not all good and not all bad. In the beginning it was young and sweet, very fresh, and we all got to learn different techniques. Then it went through a holy shit this is really blowing up. Then it went through a mega glam we can’t be touched until it all fell to shit. And now it’s the more mature been through some things chill type of vibe. At least that how I’ve seen the community grow and you two along with it. Maybe I’m completely off base who knows it’s just one person’s point of view anyway. What I do know is I’m so proud of you both. Business owners, influencers, nice people you all have just made me really proud of you and it’s been really cool to watch you throughout it all. Now if Manny would find love I’ll be happy.

Hearing them laugh together is really what keeps bringing me back to these pods lol manny’s is contagious

I agree with you Laura on the horses and carriages etc… I live in NYC and it pissed me off to see the tourists ride through Central Park on these horses that have no business being in NYC streets… the average driver shouldn’t even be driving around a Manhattan street let alone a horse, in the heat, getting spooked by cars, fainting on the floor etc…. So I’m with you on that

As someone who works in PR I can attest there are some people who are very cliquey in the industry, it’s the worst. But I will say we do a lot of work behind the scenes and work extremely hard. The process to get influencers approved alone can take months sometimes. At least the Pr pro’s I have had the opportunity to work with have all worked extremely hard. But love this podcast listening from a pr perspective found it very insightful! Big fans of you both 🤍🤍🤍

The way I see your socials is like... just because someone owns a bunch of billboards doesn’t mean they would just put pictures of all their family and friends on them... they use the space to rent out to other companies to promote their businesses.......... idk if that makes sense.

When horses are whipped they 10000% feel it. And it’s not a good experience for them. Just like you or I would feel it. Coming from someone who owned horses all my life 🥰🥰

I 1000% agree with Laura and Manny and how animals can be treated. I’ve always loved them, but this was just awesome. And them calling it a “me” thing and not making a big deal is also equally as respectable. Mad respect!

You guys are doing a really great job!! No because what you said about people pretending to be your friend during a brand trip makes so much sense now. I went on a brand trip, more of a competition with a very recognizable brand and I had the time of my life and the brand was just wonderful and everything was incredible but I met some people who whole heartily made me believe that they were my friends.. and as soon as the trip is done they barely talk to me and I felt like I did something wrong… But I didn’t they just were not genuine and this podcast really made me open my eyes. Anyways, I AM OBSESSED WITH THIS PODCAST! I just heard it on my way and I love!!! Also, I’ve met Laura at a brand event and Manny at multiple brand events and they are darlings forreal, super sweet human beings!!! So what you see here is 100% genuine!!!

Thank you guys for talking about this! I think those who aren’t in the “business world” i.e. children who watch your videos, those who maybe don’t have enough education to understand how “business works” (I’m not degrading those kinds of people) but what you’re saying is how it works. You get paid for promotion. Kind of like a commercial. You’re being truthful but it is what models, actors, etc. get and they don’t publicize it! You need to be paid and people don’t see the background “work” that goes into a “brand trip”!

Another perspective…work trips for me are early morning /late nights, no gifts, no food expenses covered, no “fun” entertainment, no plus 1 😂 not contractually obligated to show up - just lose your job. 🤪 (not saying it’s not stressful on your end either. )

Great podcast with 2 wonderful people. I love the behind the scenes ‘dirt’, it’s kinda like I thought it would be. I agree with no longer using animals for unnecessary things, they feel pain, hunger…just like we do.
