This breakdown is on point. My dad used to tell me "it's all in the legs and wrist", don't 'launch' the ball with your arms". The goal of an efficient, repeatable shot is a clean transfer of power from the legs (which are far stronger than your arms) to the wrist. Go look at vid of Steph Curry shooting as a kid. He had range out past 3pt as a middle schooler, but I bet he couldn't have benched 50lbs, but his wrist snap was like a whip. Or go watch tape of Larry Bird. That dude barely jumped when he shot, but he had logo range because he'd maxed out the leg-to-wrist energy transfer with minimal wasted motion. I was never strong when I played (6'2", 155 in HS) but at my peak I had consistent range out to about 26-27 feet because my dad did a great job drilling the lessons you've outlined here into my head. A great drill for this is to start 2 feet from the hoop doing one-handed form shooting, trying to achieve that "effortless" feel of the ball snapping off the fingertips, focused on proper follow through with the wrist. I'd do 3 sets of 7 swishes in a row from the front and both sides of the hoop. Then take a 2 foot step back and repeat. Then another 2 foot step back and repeat. At about the 10 foot mark I'd switch to shooting with both hands for the extra stability. And I'd just keep backing out, trying to achieve the same effortless feel at each new distance, focused on generating power from my legs and letting it flow through my wrist. When I started having to really force the shot I knew I was approaching my max range. Over the years I could back out farther and farther and I was rarely changing the height of my jump more than a few inches, or using any extra arm strength to propel the ball. I've seen tape of Gilbert Arenas doing 1-handed form shooting out past NBA 3 range. And Bill Walton talks about Larry Bird doing this drill before games, "except Larry never stopped backing up" he says.

Elias Carlson steph can deadlift like 400, so id say his legs are pretty strong too.
@e12dollarz
@e12dollarz 4 года назад
@@ry_an. Oh for sure. Steph is super strong now. I was talking about middle school Steph bombing it from deep to make the point that "strength" as we typically think of it is an overrated aspect of shooting range. An average 8th graders legs are plenty strong to shoot a basketball from decent range if they have proper mechanics and energy transfer from their legs.

Throwing the football helped me shoot better. My coach said throw the basketball towards the roof inside your room lightly and sure enough my shot got better. Ray Allen shooting tutorials on RU-vid helped. Make sure the ball rotated like Steph Curry’s shot.

thanks brother ! ever since watching your videos, I’ve been reforming my playing style and shooting form... your analysis and your attempt of breaking it down into a ‘doable’ steps really helps me to figuring out where to starts... now I have less cramps occuring when play, better body form (not heavily relying on foot power, but also relying and improving upper body form, which shapes my chest to be more defined and no longer be a moobs), and I’ve been improving my drive and post-scoring tremendously and make those skill become consistent because of you. so thanks.. I’m still not good on 3pt or long range shot though, but playing basketball feels more rewarding when I have good stamina and forms.

Have to stay on the balls of your feet. If you try to start shooting with even one foot flat-footed it takes a good bit of power out of your shot.

I'm a good shooter but sometimes I am not getting my rotation and shot off properly because my hand placement when I catch the ball becomes screwed, any way to fix this?
@e12dollarz
@e12dollarz 4 года назад
Throw the ball out in front of you, or to your right or left, with a bunch of backspin so it'll come back to you slightly. Then practice stepping into that shot as if receiving a pass. Focus on catching the ball with good hand placement, and making minor adjustments in the split second as you raise it to shoot. Or better yet, get someone to pass you the ball so you can practice catching and adjusting before the shot smoothly and quickly.
@thisisntsparta5384
@thisisntsparta5384 4 года назад
@@e12dollarz Good tips and I already do that, it's just maybe I wasn't emphasizing hand placement when I caught it and adjusting. Thanks.
@e12dollarz
@e12dollarz 4 года назад
@@thisisntsparta5384 Yeah, pay attention to that. If you can catch it with good hand placement, then focus on getting it into your shot pocket quickly from either hand. Whenever I was having trouble with part of my shot I'd try to isolate the problem by slowing way down for a few reps. I'd go through my shot fairly slow at close range making sure I had the components right. Then if it felt right slow I'd speed it up slightly. If it still felt right I'd go game speed and try to get a bunch of reps all feeling right at full speed. You do it right enough times at full speed and the muscle memory will start to kick in during games.
