Extending the Storage Yard, New Stock and Weathering - Layout Update Summer 2020

A bit of a mismash of a layout update this week.
Firstly, I’ve been working on a rake of bogie bolster wagons. To fit Kadee couplings I simply chopped or unscrewed the old tension lock couplings and glued the kadees underneath. I weathered the wagons using Humbrol brown and black weathering powders, sealing this with Halfords Matt Laquer and then scrapping this with a glass fibre pen to produce a faded effect. The fibre pens are available here:
www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002Z8IX3...
I used the same technique on the brake van. Following this I weathered the underframes using the airbrush to simulate brake dust.
Next up, I fitted kadee couplings to a Bachmann V1/3 in LNER Apple green, following its move to the YDMR from the excellent Findhorn Light Railway. I also removed the moulded smokebox dart to fit a brass version, available here:
eileensemporium.com/component...
Next, I gave the engine a light weathering using an overall spray of black/grey. I then added some coal to the bunker and gave the wheels a clean.
Finally, I extended my storage yard by scraping up the old scene, panting the board and laying new track. This area was once a mill, then two useless short sidings. Now there is plenty of storage for new stock, with provision so add more points and sidings as and when I need to.
As always, thanks for watching!

Dude I’ve been watching your videos for the longest time now. And I’ve never taken 5 seconds to say how incredibly amazing you are at this. Your eye for detail is gorgeous. Everything on this layout looks as scenic as real life. You weathering techniques make everything look so real because you don’t over do it but you make the models look like they aren’t preserved and they are working in the 1900’s. I wish I was as talented as you. Weathering the ballast, realistic static grass, big trees, luscious scenery, realistic sized hills. I’ll stop here but again props to you this layout is an amazing creation and your models make it feel like life. Great job

Good God - you have been busy Lewis! Particularly love your "how to" videos because you always hit on ideas I'd never thought of - those fibre pens especially. The V1/3 looks happy pulling those coaches, and much better for the dulling down etc. The weathered brake van - superb effect! Teresa @Findhorn Light

Here I am watching your excellent work weathering and running gorgeous trains... then you cut away and I see chisel and scraper in hand and massive holes in your layout! Yes, the title should have cleared me in... but so much nice work gone... yeah, I know... even better to come... I guess, even DaVinci did multiple takes on the Mona Lisa, painting over each one until the last one. Cheers!

Thanks Anthony. To be honest there wasn’t much on that board anyway, I very rarely included it in videos. Just a couple of short sidings. Everything else is staying put!

Outstanding work. The couplings look alot better without them plastic tension lock couplers. I was kinda scared when I saw the firebox door handle get cut off but will admit the finished results looks very much improved. Can never have too much storage and with your fleet i would imagine its well needed! All the best, Clint

Great stuff Lewis. I think for me Kadees is a matter of when, not if, and it was realy useful to see how you approach the thorny subject of lack of NEM sockets. Very useful. I'm pleased I have a wee bit of footage of my Class 29 in the now scrapped area. I reckon that footage be worth a fortune in a few years ;@)
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 4 года назад
Thanks Andrew. Yes hold on to that sacred footage! You can get NEM sockets that glue onto the underside of the coaches which i've used before, but I figured by glueing the Kadee sraight on you're cutting out the middle man! Hope all is well with you.

Bonjour Lewis, Great improvement on your layout with the new storage extension. And fixing Kadee's with glue - well that's an interesting way to do ! And they seem to roll flawlessly over the points. As usual your weathering is superb. It all looks so easy the way you demo. Amazing. I had little time to work on the layout. A lot of cleaning in the garden and I started renovating another part of the attic. But I enjoyed your video. Thanks & greetings. Filip

Thanks Filip. I mostly use the NEM socket Kadees but these older wagons call for some creativity! The superglue holds them on extremely well though. If it works, it works! Sounds like you’ve been busy, keep it up. Thanks again.

Very nice Lewis. I think we must think along similar lines as I too have just taken delivery of a V3 however mines in BR plain black with early crests. I’ve also took on a V2 as well. Love the bolster train. I need to complete mine yet. You’re a true master at weathering your stock I would be lying if I said I wasn’t jealous. Love the work to the fiddle yard too. More room for more trains! Hope you have a good weekend, happy modelling. Ross.
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 4 года назад
Thanks Ross, always appreciate it. Very nice, and good choice. How is the V2? They are one of my all time favourites and I’ve got my eye on the new Bachmann version out this year - I just can’t decide between BR black or Green! You as well mate.
@rossnation8092
@rossnation8092 4 года назад
Mouldy Raspberry my V2 is one of the older Bachmann ones numbered 31-562 of 60834 weathered. But a split chassis from what I can see. It’s ok, but it’s showing its age agains my more modern Hornby A3s and bachmann 9Fs but it’s up to standard. I too am looking at a new V2 as well, I’m going to go with green so I’ll have one in black and one in green. I may end up with three though, so ill have one in each colour with single chimney and one with a double chimney. But on the whole id recommend a V2, even an old one they run well, are reasonably detailed and the older ones you can pick up for £40-£90. Mine was mint and it cost me £60 plus P&P. The V3 cost me £50 + P&P. But this is an older split chassis loco it would appear. But nothing a Comet Chassis couldn’t sort out but it’s perfectly fine for now. Hope that helps, Ross.

Wonderful. First time I have really seen your layout and find so many things in it I would like to do. Very interested in your storage area, what size are the post? S, M it Large? My layout is only about 8x19 and as I have allowed room fir elevated tracks I don’t have a lot of room and as such I am finding it challenging. What size is your layout and can you speak a bit about how you planned your storage area? Thanks very much for sharing
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 4 года назад
Thanks Charlie. The points are a mixture of medium and small radius. I do try and use medium where possible. My layout is about an 80 foot full loop round the outside of the loft. In terms of planning the storage area, I didn’t really plan it. I only added it about a year ago and have changed and added to it as I’ve brought more locos and stock. I’ve got an area of smaller sidings for locos and then longer sidings for rakes of coaches and wagons. If you just pin the track down you can easily change it over time which is useful. Hope that helps.

Great stuff, Lewis. Now this isn't a criticism, just an opinion; I can't help feeling that the storage yard, and I understand the need, spoils the asthetics of the layout. As always, Henry.
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 4 года назад
Thanks Henry. Yes I know what you mean - I guess like most things it comes down to compromise. The storage makes the layout so much easier and more enjoyable to operate for me. Who knows, when I’ve filled it out with more points and track, I could even make it a ‘scenic’ storage yard.

For the old stock I just cut the old couplings off and glue one underneath. You just have to get the height right so use a bit of plastic card or something to lower it if necessary. I use the big packs of kadee number 5s you get from Hattons for £15

Thanks Ken, appreciate it. No issues - that gorilla superglue seems to be ridiculously strong. I guess you could always screw them, I just didn’t have any screws large enough to hold the Kadees to hand. No issues with turns either, although the I don’t think I have any sharper than 3rd radius.

I pick your idea for a stabling/storage yard in plain view. That would be great on my forthcoming layout. Anyway, for the Kadees, I have done the same kind of trick on non-NEM coaches (Dapol LMS coaches to give you an indication) but I have conervatively retained the Kadee box instead of using only the coupler itself and nothing else. I did this because I was not thinking about something radical as your choice, but also as keeping the possibility for a hand-free operation, with magnets of course but there is also a contactless decoupling "paddle" sold by Rix in the USA for hand-free decoupling of Kadees and like anywhere on a layout, and that is what I am aiming at. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it does not seem you are interested in ahdn-free uncoupling with Kadees, which can explain the trimmed pin on all of your Kadees.
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 4 года назад
Thanks Olivier. Yes, that's right - I switched to these because the regular tensions lock couplings are so unreliable and bulky with big gaps between the stock, not so much for the automatic uncoupling aspect. I'm happy doing it by hand, although appreicate how good the auto uncoupling can look. I'm so glad I switched to the Kadees though, I wouldnt use anything else now!
@OlivierGabin
@OlivierGabin 4 года назад
@@MouldyRaspberry Same conclusion for me, plus the semi-automatic uncoupling anywhere with this : rixproducts.com/product/rix-uncoupling-tool-ho/ For the visual aspect, kadees are the best you can get, that's enough to have them.

Hey there Mr. How you get so brave to just start shooting your engines with spray, i'd be scared stiff at cocking it up and costing myself a fortune, lol. Great job on the upgrade 👍 Don't know if you like challenges, but I've not yet found anybody on RU-vid, to produce an 'effective' fiddle yard (10+ full length sidings to store 6-8 coach trains, without loosing say 2ft of 8ft in points taking up space!) Effectiveness of a traverser, but using traditional points system, or even combination of the two. Does he dare accept the Challenge? Lol 😉

Thanks Tony. Yes, I’ve changed a few old wagons to these. I’d just cut the old coupling off and glue/screw a kadee to the underside. This couplings ere North America style . Because I’m living here in Canada 🇨🇦 I’m using them. It’s not the perfect ones and never glue them like that must be free to go left and right. Also it’s a video at the RU-vid that shows how you can upgrade the English ones so to be able to use them with the magnets. Personally because I’m having English rolling stock I have found that they are more reliable. Don’t change the style like that and if you want to do it must have done you homework first.
