Exterminate! Painting Classic Daleks - A Bit of Pre-Birthday Painting

The Daleks have been a staple of British sci-fi for more than fifty years, terrifying generations of kids across the world - and earning the occasional "Pfah, they're not that scary!" from others. They're an awesome, classic design! READ MORE:
If you'd like the STL files for the Dalek shown in this video, the designer Wayne Peters (@wayne_peters on Twitter) has kindly uploaded them to Thingiverse. The Dalek is here: www.thingiverse.com/thing:483... Be sure and check out his other designs, including a properly grim Davros!
When wondering how I was going to make use of this little monstrosity now that it's finished, I figure I can easily slot it in as a bad guy in Stargrave - maybe a power-armoured elite pirate enemy - or something from Five Parsecs From Home once I've had a proper read through the NPCs and bestiary. Sometimes, though, it doesn't matter whether or not you're going to use a miniature as long as it was fun to paint!
Technically, given the date line and my birthplace, it's already my birthday in New Zealand even while I'm here in Germany. You bet I'm going to take advantage for an almost 36 hour birthday! If you're feeling particularly generous, I certainly won't stop anybody from dropping something in the tip jar if you'd like to help me celebrate (and move house, ho hum!): ko-fi.com/docwholigan

One of the first sets of minis I ever painted was the old "Daleks & Cybermen" set that Citadel/GW released way back in the 1980s, to capitalize on the growing popularity of Doctor Who at the time. That was waaay before I knew anything about washes, shades, highlights, or even acrylic paints (I used Testors Enamels on them, as I recall). Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I bought about 3 of those sets and painted The Daleks in Various colours, silver and blue ( The Daleks ), silver and blue with black domes (Evil of the Daleks ), silver and black ( Death to the Daleks ), black and grey ( Genesis ), white and gold ( Revelation/Rememberance ) plus a few specialist commanders like the gold and black ( Day of the Daleks ), the red and blue commander from the chase and a couple of others. They and the Cybermen took it in turn to fight against my 1/72 WW2 British Paratroops who i painted as UNIT soldiers. I even converted some figures into the 7 Doctors and their companions

Awesome. I have some of the old Harlequin/Black Tree metal daleks that I painted in the classic scheme as well, but I did them in a very light grey/almost white instead of silver.

Nice Daleking! :) I'm sorry that I somehow missed this ep when it came out. I'm finishing a platoon of 34 of my 40mm printed pepperpots right now. That's over 1,900 little black hemispheres on those Renegade Daleks, and by the end, I will indeed be barking mad. Alas, there really is no substitute for patience, thin paint, a good brush, and significant quantities of alcohol afterwards.

I have something like 40 - 50 of the Harlequin Miniatures Daleks in metal from the Doctor Who Miniatures Game from the late 80s, early 90s. I still have yet to paint them because of the hull spheres. And laziness. Mostly laziness. It was great to see one pop up here! I may have to get mine out and finish them.

Many happy returns for tomorrow, Sonic! A great paint and explain here. It was quite creepy how the Dalek came to life (?!) as the details were added. I agree that these were so scary as a kid. Perhaps something about the voices? EXTERMINATE! 😱

Love that look, do the Blue, Red and Yellow ones from the 'cult of skara' or whatever they were. I've got a load of Dr Who models in my "Pile", Judoon, Silence etc along with all of the modern Dr's and Companions. Not sure about the game, but really keen!!! to get the models painted!

Honestly, even now I find daleks frightening. I first saw them as a child when Dr Who was revived in 2005. It never struck me how evil they truly were until the finale of the first season, when they killed everybody on satellite 5. Especially Linda with an I (or was it with a y?). She was sweet, and innocent. I had never been exposed to such raw destruction of innocence in fiction before. And its stuck with me to this day. Daleks are everything evil in the world.
