Hi, my device does not even show up on disk utility, even after I've selected show all devices. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?
Hello mate, that does happen sometimes (your external hard drive not appearing in Disk utility). Quick question....have you dropped your device anytime by accident? If no, then try the below and hopefully you would be able to solve this issue: 1. Ensure your laptop is plugged into a power socket. 2. Disconnect any device connected to your laptop. 3. Shut down your laptop fully (FULL SHUTDOWN) 4. Restart or turn on your laptop (ensure it is plugged into a power socket). 5. Now connect your external hard drive (it would not come up on your laptop which is not a problem). 6. Open disk utility. 7. Click on mount and try to mount your external harddrive. 8. If it does not mount, click on first aid and let the first aid program run. 9. After the first aid program runs, click on mount again and hopefully this would sort out the issue. 10. If this does not sort the issue, try using another USB cable to connect your device to your laptop. Good luck and let me know if this works. When you put 'Not Showing Up in Mac Disk Utility' in your title, I thought you meant literally not showing up, like mine. It doesn't show anything at all. Gotta fix for that?
Hello Vani, if your external hard drive is not showing up at all in Disk Utility, it could mean either your external hard drive is damaged (it has experienced a massive impact and nothing we do would make it work again), the cable is damaged (there is hope) or your Mac just cannot read the external harddrive (an error). Give the below a try and hopefully it may solve the issue you have: 1. Do a full restart of your laptop (shut it down by pressing and holding the power button for at least 5 seconds while ensuring it is NOT plugged into a power source) 2. Now connect your power source, then power up your laptop. 3. After it boots up, connect your external hard drive and check if it comes up in disk utility. 4. If it does not come up at all in Disk utility, then try this: 5. Change the cable connecting your external hard drive to your computer. Try these steps and if it works great. Hello Ivan, unfortunately if you can hear your hard drive's needle clicking or making any other kind of sound, then you have to consult with a data recovery professional right away cos this isn’t the kind of issue that will get better on its own. Hi There DJ Blink-Blink, awesome tutorial video! I'm still having problems with a SSD drive I installed in my Playstation 2 console to store my ISO game files. The format of the SSD drive is MS-DOS (FAT32) with Master Boot as the partition scheme. The SSD drive was formatted by the PS2 itself when I installed the SSD drive. What I'm trying to do now is connecting the SSD drive to my Mac Mini via usb but I get that message "Uninitialized". I tried to do the First Aid on it and completed it successfully but no "Mounting" option shows up, unlike when you did it. I'm using a USB to SSD adapter to connect the drive to my Mac Mini. Totally frustrated with this. Any suggestions?
Hello mate, If your Mac was able to complete the first aid successfully then we can rule out any issues with the cable connecting the external hard drive and your Mac. However for it not to be "mountable" on your Mac, something else is wrong. Try this option below and hopefully it may work: 1. Access safe mode on your Mac (watch this video to learn how ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4v6rKqkmAM8.html ) 2. Now try the first aid process 3. Then attempt to mount your external hard drive Cheers, DJ Blink-Blink
@@DjBlinkBlink No luck DJ Blink-Blink, still does not connect nor mount. I did the First Aid again and completed perfectly but the mount option never showed, just ghosted. I guess must be how the Playstation 2(old game console year 2000) formatted the SSD drive because the partition type does not show on Disk Utility, shows Unsupported. I know for sure that it is formatted as MS-DOS (FAT32). My only other option is to connect through my network by Ethernet cable to the PS2 and transfer files that way. I'll let you know. Thanks for the help, you were the only one who got back to me, appreciate that!

Oh and it is an external drive on my iMac. We had a power failure and the external has not 'mounted' since. I can feel that the drive inside is moving. It is a WD Elements external drive and for Mac.
@@lorenautterstrom1938 hello Lorena. The power failure is the root cause of the issue you have (File system check exit code is 8 indicates a corrupted file system was found). There may however be a way to solve this. See below: 1. Boot your Mac in safe mode. To do this, restart your Mac and hold “Shift” while it’s booting. Sign in with your password and your Mac will then check your disks (including your external hard drive). This will make the login process take longer than normal, so be patient. When it’s done logging in and you see a desktop, the disk check is done. You can reboot your Mac at this point. 2. Boot into Special Recovery Mode. To do this, restart your Mac. Press and hold the “Command+R” keys while it’s booting. You’ll see a progress bar appear, and you can release the keys after you do. Your Mac will load straight into recovery mode. (If recovery mode doesn’t appear, restart your Mac and try pressing the keys again.) In OS X Recovery, click the “Disk Utility” shortcut to launch the Disk Utility here. Select the drive or partition you need to repair and click the “First Aid” button. The Disk Utility interface is the same one you’ll see on your Mac OS X desktop, but run it from here and it’ll be able to repair problems with your system drive. 3. Use FSCK in single user mode (last resort). To do this, start your Mac in single-user mode. Restart it, and then press and hold the Command+S keys while it boots. You’ll enter single-user mode, which will provide you with a text-mode terminal. Type the following command into the terminal and press Enter to start a file system check: /sbin/fsck -fy The command will run through several phases of checks. When it’s done, you’ll see a message saying “** The volume [name] appears to be OK” if everything is fine. If it found problems, you’ll see a “***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****” message. This indicates the fsck command found and fixed problems. The fsck command may find additional errors after repairing the first batch of errors, so Apple recommends you run the fsck command again if it found and fixed problems. Run the above fsck command over and over until you see a “** The volume [name] appears to be OK” message. When the fsck command says your disk is okay, type the following command at the terminal and press Enter: reboot Your Mac will reboot, returning you to the usual login screen. Good luck and keep me updated on the outcome. Cheers, DJ Blink-Blink www.djblinkblink.com/ultimate-mix-album

Hi DJ Blink-Blink, I have an issue with another external hard drive I have. It's a Lacie rugged mini portable 1tb hard drive. I have about 300gb of files stored most of which are music files. The music files are stored in a folder plus I have other folders in the external hard drive as well. Really the issue I'm having is when I have the external hard drive connected to my macbook and all is well and it shows up on the screen fine and it opens fine to see whats inside. But when I double click on the folder where I have music files stored it takes a looooong time to show up on the screen. The other folders on the external hard drive isn't much of an issue when I double click on them to see the contents inside the other folders. I'm thinking the reason for this is because the external hard drive is a slower rpm than the 7200rpm that usually purchase but I guess they sold me a slower rpm. Making me think I was buying a 7200rpm external hard drive. I want to be able to see my files quick or quicker. How can I go about solving this? Cheers, Ivan
Hello Ivan, As you highlighted your music files are stored in a massive folder (about 300GB) in your external hard drive. Now because the rpm is slower than normal and it's also not a SSD, it would take a long while before your drive can read the files. Try this options below to reduce the time it takes to read the folder: 1. Defrag your hard drive. 2. Scan your hard drive for errors. 3. Disable the thumbnails of the files in your music folder (this should help). Cheers, DJ Blink-Blink 𝑴𝒀 𝑫𝑱 𝑴𝑰𝑿𝑬𝑺: www.djblinkblink.com/music-downloads 𝑴𝒀 𝑰𝑵𝑺𝑻𝑨𝑮𝑹𝑨𝑴 𝑷𝑨𝑮𝑬: instagram.com/djblinkblink/

Hello Erik, thanks for making me smile with your comment about how I say discs 😂😂😂 So, let's solve this issue you have. If the option to mount is greyed out it could be a number of things. Give the below a try and hopefully one or all of it may work: 1. Do a full restart of your laptop (shut it down by pressing and holding the power button for at least 5 seconds while ensuring it is NOT plugged into a power source) 2. Now connect your power source, then power up your laptop. 3. After it boots up, connect your external hard drive. 4. If the mount feature is still greyed out, then try this: 5. Change the cable connecting your external hard drive to your computer. Try these steps and if it works great. If it does not work, then reach out to me and we would brainstorm another solution. Hi! My external drive showed up in Disk Utility but First Aid failed. (-69845) So I tried both in safe mode and recovery mode, also failed. Eventually I tried FSCK in single user mode. But after white texts rolling on the screen it went straight into my profile and didn't let me type in any commend. Do you have any suggestion what I should do or why single use mode won't let me type in commend? :( Thank you so much for your help!!
Also my drive has not experience any hard impact or external force. I believe it's too full. It just stuck in a middle of a render project and never showed up again on my mac.
@@Lex33567 hmmmmmm...this is a hard one mate. My only advise is to try the FSCK, then access "safe mode" this time before attempting to use first aid. Good luck with this, DJ Blink-Blink
Hey maybe u can help me here My 4TB transcend external hard drive won't come up and I did that first aid and stiff but still not loading up I'm also a DJ and I want transfer my music to my macbook and not showing up Any tips to help me out?
@@DjBlinkBlink no I didn't drop it This hard drive I used on my hp to dj with using serato I want transfer my music to my macbook n the light come on but its not showing on the desktop Somebody told me to plug it in and leave it and wait till it hppn Nothing ain't hppn
@street vybz okies mate. If you did not drop the external hard drive, we may (key word is may) save it if the below are in play: 1. The external harddrive WAS formatted to work with macs (exFAT or Mac OS extended). 2. You have been using the external harddrive on a MAC and you know your way around a MacBook (you will have to run this in safe mode on a MAC). Let me know if the 2 situations above are what you have now. Cheers, DJ Blink-Blink
@@DjBlinkBlink OK that's another thing Cause this my first time using a macbook These formats I trying to learn them And plus idk what the esfat mean and the others mean if you get me
Hi, I tried every youtube videos to find my external harddrive, but I still don't see anything.. I divided my hardware two parts, but I mistook that I used one for Big Sur Update, then I cannot see the file. I have a lot of recording files in there, please, I really need help.
Hello, it seems your external harddrive may be faulty. Did you at any time drop it or did your harddrive get any form of external vibration at any time?
@@sweetnawesome23 hello mate. Unfortunately if you dropped your external harddrive, it is most likely damaged from the drop (the needle that reads the drive may have moved or the drive itself may have received a massive impact from the drop). I would advise you get someone that can retrieve your data from it to assist (this would be a little bit expensive to be honest). Cheers, DJ Blink-Blink
No mate. You don't lose your data if you use this method Cheers, DJ Blink-Blink 𝙁𝙧𝙚𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙩𝙤 𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙢𝙮 80𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 90𝙨 𝙢𝙞𝙭 𝙤𝙣 𝙢𝙮 𝘿𝙅 𝙬𝙚𝙗𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙚 👉 www.djblinkblink.com/ultimate-mix-album
@@DjBlinkBlink : still not working, i try to plug my ext hardisk but still not read on my mac...but my hard drive sounds spinning like still processing
@@unclenickofficial ok. With that spinning sound you heard, can you confirm if you dropped your external harddrive or if it experienced any external force?
@@unclenickofficial okies. What you need to do is complete this process via "recovery mode or safe mode". You can access safe mode with CMD+R (click this link to watch the video on how to get into safe mode ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4v6rKqkmAM8.html) When in safe mode, you would see 'disk utility'. Now try the process within my tutorial which should hopefully work. Cheers, DJ Blink-Blink
Thank you for the tutorial! I tried to repair the disk, however I got error messages that it couldn't be repaired. I'll paste them here. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance: Repairing file system. Volume is already unmounted. Performing fsck_hfs -fy -x /dev/rdisk6s2 Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume. Invalid B-tree node size The volume could not be verified completely. File system check exit code is 8. Restoring the original state found as unmounted. File system verify or repair failed. : (-69845)
Hello Knit, that is a lot of errors you have there. The only one that jumps out at me is the "Invalid B-tree node size" error. This error you are getting means the b-tree is corrupted therefore, you're faced with a corrupted external harddrive, which will cause data inaccessibility. So how can you fix this? 1. Disk utility (you have done his already) 2. FSCK command (File system constituency check). The fsck command is used to repair disk and file system problems on your Mac. To use this command, here is what you need to do: Step 1. Start your Mac in the single-user mode. Restart it, and then press and hold the Command+S keys while it boots. Step 2. Type the command /sbin/fsck -fy into the terminal and press Enter to start a file system check. Step 3. When the fsck command has your disk checked and repaired, type reboot and press Enter. Your Mac will reboot and return to the usual login screen. Hopefully this works for you. @@DjBlinkBlink Sure would check it out 😊. Just had a small question. Does pulling out the external Hdd from the macbook without ejecting it also causes error when we connect the hdd for the next time?

@@sankhefam9756 so definitely the problem is with your MAC cos this all started when you did the update on it. If you updated your OS on your MAC to Big Sur or Catalina then you need to enable the visibility of external disks. For setting your preferences, try these 3 options below : Go to 1. Finder > Preferences > General. Under ‘Show these items on the desktop’, check the ‘Hard disks’ and ‘External disks’ checkboxes. 2. Similarly, go to Finder > Preferences > Sidebar. Under ‘Show these items on the sidebar’, check the ‘Hard disks’ and ‘External disks’ checkboxes. 3. Also, go to Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. In Disk Utility, to view all mountable and non-mountable drives, go to View > Show All Devices. Try any of these and let me know how you get on. Cheers, DJ Blink-Blink
@@sankhefam9756 okies mate. Let's try to use your "terminal application" in your macOS to mount your external harddrive drive. Steps are as follows: Go to Finder > Applications > Utilities. Double-click Terminal to launch it. At the command line, type diskutil list, then hit Return. Note disk# of the external hard drive. Type diskutil mountDisk /dev/disk#, then hit Return. After mounting it, use these steps below to repair it: Type diskutil repairVolume /dev/disk#. then hit Return. When the repair process is completed, go to Terminal > Quit Terminal. Let me know how this goes and if it works for you. Cheers, DJ Blink-Blink
Hello, you can try to run FSCK command from single user mode. The process to do this is highlighted below: 1. Go to Disk Utility, select your external hard drive, and remember the file system and Device name. 2. Restart your computer and hold down Command + S keys to boot into Single User Mode. 3. Release the keys until you see white text appears on the startup screen. 4. Wait until root# appears at the bottom of the text. 5. Run the command below: /sbin/fsck_hfs -fy/dev/disk3s2 Remember to replace "hfs" with the file system on your external hard disk. For example, type fsck_msdos for FAT file system and type fsck_exfat for exFAT file system. Remember to replace disk3s2 with the device name of your external hard disk too. 6. Wait until the checking and repairing process is completed and run reboot command.
