Same 😁. I also like the frugal living ideas and encouragement. I rarely find any new to me tips, but I enjoy seeing how other people save. Do you have any plans for a garden there in Florida? Thanks for sharing Katie. Blessings, -kate
Tip: shop by the week. Do batch cooking by the week. But plan by the month. So, I prep a week's worth of food, that is NOT the only thing that I eat that week. I mix it up with meals prepped three and four weeks previously. I enjoy cooking, so it provides enough scope for one of my favorite activities, provides a lot of variety in foods which is good nutritional insurance, and interesting variety. The longer the time span you have, the greater the variety and creativity that you can manage. Love your channel - I'm off to binge-watch, now. 😀
Great video! Something that you didn't mention that allows you to keep your costs so low is that I don't see you wasting any food. You buy with specific meals in mind with no random items that might not get used. The average American family wastes 30% of the food that they buy. I don't think that's happening at your house. Good job!
We eat meat but I buy it on sale also I lived close to a church that gives free food to everyone and they gave me lot’s of rice beans, can’s of corn ,green beans ,tomato sauce and lots of fruits and vegetables for free . I also cook a lot at home $85 to $100 I buy of food for 2 weeks. Your doing a awesome job .
Excellent! Do you know 1 lb of dry beans makes the equivalent of 5 cans at a fraction of the price? I make a bag of lentils, black and great northern beans once a month and freeze them. And make red lentils on demand, lol. (For almost what you bought you cans this week). It lasts about 5 weeks for me. I need the variety. So nice to see all the broccoli 🥦. I live on it! It's great you eat so well on what the USDA says is what 1 person requires, not 4! ( $200 for 1, then $100 for each additional household person).
@@raisingwildflowers picked up a can of coconut milk to add to tomorrow's soup. Thanks, I would not have thought of using it. I need to start. Love utube and comments. I learn alot! What type of Master's program are you starting? Any thought on making homemade V8 juice? All I can think of is either pasta sauce or stewed tomatoes ( already full of spices) and mixed vegetables. 🤔
I do the same. I end up eating very similar foods everyday. But you could freeze leftovers, and make another meal the next day. Do this several times. You now have variety in your freezer.
Very impressive! I was thinking about what you said, even if you chose one meal to be the same all week, like lunch, I bet you could save money. I might try that out :)
We also eat whole food plant based. I love all kinds of beans but chickpeas are so versatile. I make hummus, roast them, put them in soups, on salad, and in sandwiches. There are many recipes for chickpea salad, all of them are a bit different and all are tasty. The first time I made one with pickles, celery, and mustard, my husband asked why we were having tuna.
Just a plant based head's up, last night I made Whole Food Plant Based Cooking Show's black bean burger/salsa burger. It should be easy to find on her channel; I think she uploaded it maybe a week ago. My kids LOVED it. They requested that it become a regular in our meal repertoire.
You are AMAZING with a capital A! Not vegan, but I'm SO impressed with your self-discipline with budgeting, spending, and food. My family does not eat the same thing all week, but we do eat leftovers every second night. I only have 3-4 options for breakfast. I rarely make a separate meal for lunches. We just use up leftovers. My kids are 21,21, & 18. If they don't like what I serve, they are quite happy to purchase their own snacks or meals, but they like what I make most of the time.♥️🇨🇦
If you love what you eat, the repetition is not an issue, people actually eat the same foods but in rotation which is where the cost comes in. I love your approach, make a batch and save money on the foods you love. We all eat the same thing for breakfast so that meal should be no issue and lunch is very similar, most eat salads or a sandwich. The test is dinner which we are programmed into having something different each night. I think they approach of starting with 3 nights the same and integrate to weekly might help in the transition. We put so much value on different foods yet your soup has so many of the veggies we all eat each week but I bet not the variety you use which is very healthy. Great video! Thank you!
I’m so excited for these videos! Please keep them coming! I thought I was the only one who planned meals this way. It saves so much time and money to cook once a week. I never get tired of my food because I don’t repeat the same recipe very often. I’m trying to move to a more plant based diet so I’m hoping you continue this series! ❤️🥰
Just found your channel and really enjoying your content! We do something similar in our family too. I bulk cook our food each week which includes potatoes, sweet potatoes, brown rice, some kind of bean/lentil stew or veggie soup (just printed the veggie loaded white bean soup to try...thank you for sharing). I will also prep salad ingredients each week and while I eat plant-based, some of us don't so I also boil eggs and air fry chicken. During the week, everyone mix and matches ingredients to create individual meals. We always have condiments, sauces, salsa, hummus on hand to add in. Rinse and repeat each week. And yes, yes, yes...this saves so much time and money during the week and I don't have to cook when I get home from work. The use of an Instant Pot and air fryer makes batch cooking very time efficient too.
Absolutely fantastic - like you, I dont mind eating the same food all week, especially because it keeps me out of the kitchen and supermarket! Watching your channel from New Zealand and loving all your vegan recipes - so simple and nourishing. I will be trying that chickpea salad this weekend- looked amazing and thank you so much for the 50%cashews and 50% butterbeans mix. Legend! I will be looking out for that ' drunken potato burger.' Such awesome life skills for your teenagers - I also have two teenagers - will be trying to encourage them on board. X
New Zealand - awesome! A country I would LOVE to visit one day! My teens actually usually help me cook - or do all the cooking on certain meals - but do not want to be in my videos so I did everything this month lol. It has made them so responsible with their food choices. We have so much fun cooking and planning meals together. I think you and your teens will have such a great experience with it!
My husband is picky but I think the food looks great. Living in Florida helps w/ vegetable and fruit prices.,but if you plan your shopping it helps find the best choices and prices. Thanks for sharing
Mostly because of the price. But I also think all oil should be avoided as much as possible and no oil is "good" to use. With as little as we use, I choose the cheap option lol.
I’m in FL too and I can attest that grocery prices vary significantly based on where you shop. Example, Publix had the coffee I get for $11.99 last weekend and Target had it for $6.99 if you bought 2 and $8.29 otherwise. Publix is a tad more convenient but unless they have a sale you are going to pay way more than pretty much any other store. I don’t have Aldi or Walmart close but now buy as much as possible at Trader Joe’s and Target due to the substantial price differences from Publix.
OMG that looks delicious!!! I don't know if you do this, but you can also save your squeezed out lemon skins and boil them on the stove in some water to freshen the air in your home (a free simmer pot). I like to do this on cleaning day. Or you can sprinkle salt on your cutting board and then scrub it in with the used lemon skins (use the pulpy side to scrub with) and it will freshen your board, remove stains etc. :) I just found your channel and I love your content! Just subscribed!
Great job. I make a batch of something and then mix it up. My husband has gone WPB with me, and he would not eat the same thing all the time. I would. If I make soup, then I thicken it and will make shepherd pie or a pot pie dish. If I make a big pot of chili then I make enchiladas, carrot chili dogs with cold slaw, or chili max with vegan cheese. For breakfast I make Mary McDougal's pancakes with sparkling water, will use mashed or canned pumpkin instead of bananas with raisons. Used apple sauce too with nuts & up apple and nuts. Will make seasoned grits and greens with grated potatoes/onions, garlic, etc. I made your soup and it was soooo good. I did not make as much as you but only feeding two. Loved adding the coconut milk to it. I also mash up some potatoes and beans to thicken it. Peace!
I used to be vegan for a year and that was the only time I came close to a low food budget. I’m gluten intolerant, and eat all dirty dozen as organic, so no hope for me to ever have a low, low grocery budget. I also bulk buy my normal food items anytime there is a good sale to save. I bulk buy organic spices as well, which is a huge savings. My daughter would never eat the same meal more than two days in a week, or left overs. She has a chefs palette, is an amazing cook, and prefers to be creative in the kitchen. She does 75% of the cooking in our home. We don't eat out, so delicious foods is a must for our happiness. I personally have no problem with eating the same meals multiple days, I like to cook easy simple meals.
Good Morning from Canada. Thank you for your grocery shop budget video. I like eating very similar meals each day. The one who does the cooking is often the one who loves to cook once or twice and then have what I call “ding cuisine”. When the micro goes ding, supper is ready to sit down and eat. Your soup and chickpea salad looked absolutely delicious! I am a soup maker. Making sweet potato/ carrot soup this week to have with rye bread that I do buy ready made and keep frozen to eat a slice at a time from the toaster. I am going to give your white bean veg soup a try next week. I have soup and Dahl for lunch/ suppers this week. I was surprised at the prices in your area especially for your produce. Living in colder climate means we do pay 5.99cdn $ for a pack of strawberries, also $5.99 for 1 cup of fresh blueberries/ raspberries. The tomatoes you purchased were on sale at Walmart this weekend for 4.99, but Roma tomatoes were sale priced at 2.97/lb and cucumbers were on sale for $1.97, normally 2.97 each. We use what we have where ever we can. I often feel like I’m struggling to keep our food budget under $500 /month and then I see the actual prices different people post and I don’t feel so bad. We each work with different realities and do the best we can.My husband is a dedicated meat eater and we eat chicken, a little pork when it’s on sale, and fish. Make my own GF fish and chip recipie and we think it’s better than any beer batter recipie from a stylish cafe. We love to eat out but because of my GF restrictions, that has become a thing of the past, and our budget has benefitted from that change. Still enjoy it once a season at a small local diner that caters to smaller senior appetites and budgets and sales. Thank you for sharing your lessons and skills you have gained from a lifetime of frugal habits. I share many of your habits and tastes. Today is library day, my favourite. Enjoy your day today.
I'm confused about the chickens. Do you eat eggs? I used to eat whole food/plant-based, but now I am mostly vegetarian because I eat eggs, some cheese.
Another fabulous 👌🏼 vid 😁 I'm finding it relaxing watching you cook definitely a pleasant part of my day and seeing all the awesome subscribers you have 👍🏼 a hooked subscriber I am 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Awesome for coming in under budget! Everything looks great, I definitely got to make the banana bread. Ooooh I agree with your daughter 100% why does it matter if you eat the same thing everyday it’s just food🤜🏼🤛🏼 I can’t remember if you answered this is one of your other videos or if you want to keep it private I totally understand but what will you do with the money you save? I split my leftover grocery money…I save half in an envelope to have extra spending money during the holidays & rest I put towards my $50K savings.
Great question! I don't think I did answer this. We are working on saving up for a car with better gas mileage - so the money we saved this month will go towards a new vehicle :)
I can't even cook. I'd just burn the house down eventually. I just buy the premade/precooked stuff, and eat it cold, or when it thaws. Well, at least I'll save money on electricity.😆
Hey, that is a win for saving electricity! At least you are saving money somewhere lol. And you still have a home, which would be kinda expensive to replace.
I don't mind eating tge same breakfast and lunch everyday..i grew up Mexican Household family of 6.. my hubby is ver picky snd will be bored eating the same thing for lunch snd dinerr 😂
Hi, I'm also a vegan and have been for several years (vegetarian before that). I'm wondering what your family's sources of calcium are? I drink calcium-fortified soy milk, eat tofu and nuts as my calcium sources. Strength training is also important for bone strength. Just wondering how you address this need, thanks.
Yes, B12 is important! It is actually becoming important for everyone - even many non-vegans are low on B12. We eat a LOT (lol) of nutritional yeast, which is fortified with B12 :)
Do you ever run out of the prepared food? If so, do you have backup food in house or do you run out to the store again? Often my family will eat through food faster than I think they will, so I have either frozen or pantry items to whip out. I won't go to the store again. Blessings, -kate
We don't usually run out of food - I am pretty good at knowing what everyone will eat and everyone rations food pretty well. They know it is suppose to last a week lol. But if we do run out, I usually always have extra pasta noodles, rice, oats, and random frozen fruits and veggies on hand :)
Is that a vitamix you used for the cashew/white bean mixture? I am never able to get my cashews that smooth even if I soak them first. There is always small chunks. I’ll try adding almond milk and white beans, but I’m worried that my Ninja food processor might be the problem.
