"Extreme," "Weird," or just "Simple"? You decide! Here are 22 things our family does to save money. It all started when I was a young, single mom with 2 small children just trying to get by - but even as my life has evolved and grown, these are the frugal things we are still doing. Spending money and changing these habits seems counterintuitive. Many of these ideas are things just about every family can begin doing TODAY to save money.

My parents were the same way. My parents felt anything to do with money was adult business and so, would never discuss financial matters with us kids. It took me a long time to figure out that being in debt is a trap and that being debt free opens your door to so much more freedom and I realized I don’t really need that much to make me happy!

New sub here--glad to have found your channel. I'm a homesteading, homeschooling mom from WV. We do many of the same things to save money...home haircuts for the girls, no cable, homemade cleaning products, less paper products, etc. We grow a huge garden in summer and preserve food, we raise all of our poultry (turkey and chicken), keep hens for eggs, and I grow and forage a lot of plants for medicine-making. We rarely need to see a doctor. I make a year's worth of bar soap in the spring or summer and I make laundry detergent in 5 gallon buckets--one bucket lasts about 7.5 months and our clothes are clean and odor free. I line dry in summer and use a clothes horse for small loads in winter (have to use the dryer for larger loads...but going to add a ceiling mounted clothes dryer next year, Lord willing). We heat mostly with wood with a small amount of propane used for backup. We buy used books for homeschool lessons and I design most of our curriculum. We are coffee drinkers and I buy unroasted "green" beans in bulk and roast as needed (unroasted beans store well in lidded buckets). A big money saver for us is that we finagled/installed 2 250-gallon IBC totes under a downspout and collect rainwater from our roof....we pipe that downhill to our garage into 3 250-gallon totes. My husband installed an RV/camper style pump and ran water line to our toilets. We flush toilets with rainwater and that cut our water bill down significantly. If we need to, we can easily switch the toilets back to city water (times of drought, etc.....doesn't happen often). Looking forward to watching more of your videos! God bless.

I thought “I don’t think I do anything weird” as I was looking at a jar of banana peels soaking in water on the counter because I use the potassium-infused water as free plant food 😂

We were fortunate growing up that our parents really talked about money, savings, etc. so we had a good foundation. Definitely way than more than most of our friends. I think one big savings tip is to plan vacations with kids that focuses on spending time together, not money. We camped with our kids and I would say they still talk about the fun times we had together. Two are big campers now. Our friends spent a lot of money on vacations, but they were all stressed out, both from the high pace of activities and “getting their moneys worth”. One friends son told us he wished he could go with us, because we seemed to be having more fun. Kids want to be with you, not necessarily big expensive trips. Especially if you end up fighting the entire time.

Awesome tips! We do most of these, as a family of 10. One extra thing I thought of, that we do on and off, is to hang our laundry to dry on a line outside. Free drying.

Librarys usually have toy lending. Not sure if you have these or not? When where on water retrictions I would pump out the final rinse water the gardens. I make meals ahead, eat leftovers, have smaller meals a couple of days through the week especially the days after we had a special meal celebration. I buy marked down foods and freeze where I can. I buy in bulk if that saves us money. Your tips are great for people who need to cut spending quickly. We also make sure money for bills is always saved first then we do whatever we can with rest usig our freezer and pantry.

We do many of these things. Some additional ideas. Unplug unused appliances, turn off lights. Fluff cleaned clothes in the dryer then line dry. Save running water until it turns hot when doing dishes. (Use this water in the garden or to flush the toilet) Instead of running water for dishes, use dish pans, one soapy to wash, another clear to rinse. Reuse glass jars for canning. Almost all lids with built in gaskets reseal nicely.

11:40 More natural temperature Try putting a window air conditioner in "Energy Saver" mode and setting the temperature to 86. This, with the help of a tiny fan, circulates DRY air, allowing your body's natural evaporative cooling (through perspiration) to keep you comfortable. Also, wear less clothing when sleeping and sleep on top of the blankets & sheets.

5:40 Kids' toys . . . Each of my 4 children received a wooden spoon as their first toy. Later on, usually beginning in the terrible twos, they learnd a new "specific" use for that wooden spoon. 😂

it blows my mind that some of the things you do are considered "extreme" by some. to me these are completely normal and reasonable things to do. what is more extreme is not doing them. taking a shower for more than 5 minutes, driving everywhere, buying everything new for your babies, those are extreme!

My niece’ daughter gets so many gifts for her Birthday and Christmas, they put away several and bring them out on occasion. She has one room ( I think it was a pantry?; but it looks like a toy store. Shelves and shelves of toys! Ridiculous! I try to give cash for her savings account, clothing or an educational gift

Check with a nutritionist. It is important when there are medical reasons for a diet plan to have professional input to ensure your nutritional needs are met. It will be worth any money you have to pay for the appointments rather than relying on information from RU-vid. Good luck

What is a HOA?
@raisingwildflowers
@raisingwildflowers Год назад
Home Owners Association. HOA's are a committee of neighborhood members who set rules and regulations for the neighborhood. They can decide things like the color of your house, type of landscaping, how many cars you have parked in your driveway, etc. Each homeowner in the neighborhood pays a fee every month to this committee - the fee usually goes towards maintaining community space, like any landscaping, pools, etc. Not all HOA's are bad, but they are definitely a breeding ground for neighborhood drama - especially if you are the "weird" neighbor lol.

Because you stick to a healthy diet and get exercise, no one in your family is obese. Obesity incurs extra expenses because of health complications. Many Americans live with costly chronic diseases that could be avoided with a healthy diet, exercise. Your life also seems to be happy and largely stress free, and we all know how damaging stress can be, not just for our bodies, but for our mental health, as well. You should be very proud of the life you've made for yourself and your family. ❤

Exactly! It's the foundation of saving money. We have eaten a mainly whole food plant based diet with lots of big salads, hearty soups and beans. Now in our 70s we are the only couple we know that doesn't take meds. Recently went for a check up, the first in 7 years, and the doctor was amazed we are so healthy. It helps to be frugal and debt free too.

9:30 Eating meat Waaaaa . . . I'm violently allergic (anaphylaxis) to most fruits and vegetables so all I eat is meat (& eggs). How I afford that is, I raise my own (chickens, meat rabbits & cattle). No land for cattle? Share crop with someone and use FREE leased pasture. The property owner dodges thousands of dollars in property taxes, your cattle "qualifying" his land for an agricultural property tax exemption. See? No excuses! 😊

Maybe that is not something YOU want to cut because showering everyday is what you want to do, but I do not need to shower everyday. I haven’t for years and I am certain there is no reason I would need to.

Some tips are great and some are way too unnesessary. First tip should be plan really good the family so we dont have after 10 children with nothing to eat.I dont see the why you should have 10 or 12 kids if you are frugal.Makes no sense.

Frugality is a lifestyle . People are frugal for many reasons, not only due to limited income. We have a lot of income and we still choose frugality.
@susanne022
@susanne022 Год назад
Being frugal is a mindset. My husband and I were frugal as we were students and having our first child. Now we have a good income, we are both doctors of medicin, but still living frugal. We don‘t VALUE a big car, a unnecessarily big house , buying expensive clothes….but enjoying nature, gardening.. And one big point. I think showing your children a rich life, shower them with toys, makes them spoiled brats, who don‘t appreciate the important things of life. And maybe they get in poor circumstances, they cannot handle it
