In today's video I am going to attempt to restore the severely dented and rusted tailgate on this rare, classic 1948 GMC pickup. This will involve a lot of hammer and dolly work, metal shrinking, mig welding and grinding.

Thanks! Unfortunately people will still complain about money. When I worked at a restoration shop my boss tried inviting the customers to the shop so they could do some of the grunt work, or just watch us work...he also tried setting up a camera to record each days work to show the customer. We also had to take 1000s of pictures of every little task. In the end the customers still couldn't comprehend why it was costing so much and the majority of the cars we worked on never got finished

I wonder if most people have any idea just how much craftsmanship, patience and time it takes to do things like repairing a panel most would have trashed. Maybe disclose how much time it takes start to finish on some of these projects. Judging by the time I've spent on my 62 C10 I'll guess the tailgate was 7-8 hours or more?

Shrinking disk: I have used it a lot with great success. Your comments are on the mark on several counts. You do need a mega grinder to get the rpm's up to a usable level. Emphasis on mega....not just a bigger than normal unit. The marker for me made no difference with or without. And I wear cut proof gloves whenever I use it. Unfortunately my good friend Wray who sells them does not tell you that you need that funky flange nut that he sells separately and then you need to stack up a bunch of washers in order to get it to screw tightly into the grinder. I use a damp sponge so there is not really any rust afterwards and I do rust treatment always right before epoxy primer anyway.

Watching him quench it with water and seeing that plate warp by inches was very memorable. He bought a new tailgate later... Dad is no longer with us, but the old '69 is still rolling along. I have a lot of the same questions about the creation side of Ewe-Toob. Nothing seems intuitive. I couldn't figure out how to post pictures in what is now the Community Tab. The way I was finally able to get that Community Tab to show up was an accident. When I tried to do a custom thumbnail on a small RU-vid short, it made me verify myself again (I guess they want to make sure I'm still me.) After I verified my(Nom de Guerre)self (again) suddenly that feature was unlocked. There doesn't seem to be any sort of instruction manual, which makes sense because RU-vid destroyed instruction manuals. I used to love exploded drawings now I've got a fumble through 6 videos & hope that somebody shot the video from an angle to see the screw that I'm trying to see to determine where it is and how to take it out. . . .other than communism. . . Nice pants that you were wearing during your "tailgate talk". No holes, they look good enough to go to church in, not that I am advocating, I just wanted to say that they look good. The tailgate looks pretty good too. It does have the benefit of being the original tailgate and as you pointed out, this could help out for the not so popular tailgate restorations.

I like the resourcefulness of your methods. "Waste not want not." Who knows, there may be a guy or gal out there that has the time but not all the money some do. Nice work!
