The camshaft drive chain tensioner is a failure point on Yamaha engines , the coil spring has been known to break and release tension on the cam chain. This results in a catastrophic engine failure as valves hit the piston. The cure is quite simple , a longer 6 mm bolt that pushes on the end of the cam chain adjustment screw to stop it backing off in the event of a spring breaking. A lock nut on the longer bolt holds it in the desired tension. Yamaha YZ250F & YZ450F and WR models all use the same design cam chain tensioner , my personal WR250F had the same failure but fortunately I noticed it before it caused major damage. King regards Adam Troy

It's an issue with single cylinder engines but not 4 cylinder. 4 cylinder engines have smoother cam operation. A single cylinder you have fluctuation in the stress on the cam chain and tensioner.

" ... headache for 3 years ... " All of a sudden I feel incredibly fortunate. My dad and uncles used to throw us around like acrobatic toys while we were still in diapers. When my uncle bought a PA-18-125 back in 1951, aunt Gracie was the first passenger, I was the second. Over 70 years of zipping, spinning and flying around, don't recall ever not enjoying a single minute of it!

It’s a smart person that knows their limitations and knows how to surround themselves with the right people to be successful. Kudos to Steve and his success and to you for brining us another informative segment. 300HP!! 👍👍 MAN, that must be a blast!! I'd be able to launch a good sized aircraft out of my backyard with that kind of power! 😎 If I ever get or build one of these aircraft, I'm sold on the Yamaha. I've worked on that style engine for 20 years now. The fuel injection is new to me, but it can't be any worse than modern automobiles. Looking forward to your next vid on these engines! 👍🍻

Suggestion: look at cams to change the valve duration opening. These engines are designed to rev out to pull up hills. Short stroke, high rev. They can be calmed down by changing the lobes so they make more torque, less vibration. I would suggest Crower Cams as a start.

Wish my wife would be the same she is terrified ill end up my name in the news. She knows I love flying I worry my head won't be where it needs to be while training thinking that the entire time she is worried sick back home about me. The Yamaha 5 valve engine has amazing power. I remember way back in the 90's when 4 strokes started in motocross up until then most people considered 4 strokes never have the power a 2 stroke had until the Yamaha 5 valve engine came out.

What sort of numbers are we talking for TBO, reliability? What octane/aki? , gearbox ratio/ prop rpm? There's a need for reliable 250-300 affordable hp on mogas all over the world
@ExperimentalAircraftChannel
@ExperimentalAircraftChannel 4 года назад
Good questions. Good Questions. I don't think they have actually set a TBO yet. I believe the normally aspirated can run on pump gas (not turbo) and the gearbox is somewhere in the 4-4.5 to 1 ration I think. I will have more info on the Yamaha coming soon. All the details. Thank you for watching!

Steve, was your headaches due to altitude sickness? For those who have it (my dad and oldest brother, and hunting budy have it) increasing your Nitric Oxide intake could solve that problem. I fly a T-Bird II and want to jump up to the Highlander!
@ExperimentalAircraftChannel
@ExperimentalAircraftChannel 4 года назад
I believe it was due to the "motion." I have a similar problem during the first 10hrs of my flight training. I was always getting sick. My instructor didn't think I was going to be able to flight train. I worked through it by taking shorter flights and building up to longer flights. Thank you for watching and supporting here!

What do you do to the fuselage frame to make able to handle so much more thrust?
@ExperimentalAircraftChannel
@ExperimentalAircraftChannel 4 года назад
I have asked this over "other" aircraft manufacturers recently myself. Being the load is so spread out across the airframe into the longerons most say it isn't an issue. The issue is the aircraft now being VERY capable of going well beyond the VNE in straight and level flight etc etc. Thank you for watching and engaging here. I appreciate you!
@sblack48
@sblack48 4 года назад
Experimental Aircraft Channel most say it isn’t an issue but do they really know? Has a competent person done analysis? If it isn’t an issue then the stock airframes might be way over built. Or maximum engine mount and the longeron loads are driven by something other than thrust forces and moments. But to determine that takes some detailed work by a qualified engineer, not some guy looking at it and pronouncing “ah, it’s fine, hasn’t fallen off yet”! One always wonders how much real knowledge is behind these mods.

Luke P Luke, when I seen the price of a stock engine from Steve, I agree with you, but only if the Yamaha engine price is a lot more stand alone like a Honda would come. I can Tig tanks and headers and I would probably buy a heavily tested ratio prop drive. I Love Sonex and I would love to see it in a Sonex. Be Blessed
@randywilliams4325
@randywilliams4325 4 года назад
Snowmobile engines don’t have an attached transmission . That engine was used on the 1st gen Yamaha fz1 and r1 motorcycles . Snowmobile version of that engine is probably about 40 lbs lighter . On motorcycles those engines run thousands of miles with just oil changes .

I love your content so far but have a constructive comment: there's kind of a "standard" in audio volume (for broadcast TV at least) and it's -7 VU. Nothing should go over that level, not the swooshes not the crazy knocks or the incidental muzak. Your videos are way too high overall, and it's a big PITA to have to rush and hit the down volume every time you want to watch one. On the other hand, man, please, don't use the obnoxious sound FX noises anymore! Super loud Swooshes and knocks. They're REALLY annoying. Thanks for your work. In all other aspects, it's really good.
