How to warm compress? Here I review how I like to do them.
Warm compresses work best by
Providing constant heat
Do them for at LEAST 10 minutes at a time
Repeat at least daily for dry eye symptoms or blepharitis
Repeat at least four times per day in cases of a stye or chalazion
PRO TIP: Gentle massage over the eyelids will help push melted oils out of the blocked Meibomian glands and allow them to produce new oils.

I do 20 seconds and it feels great and lasts 15 minutes easily, it's really been helping my infected blepharitis and the massaging is helping too! Hopefully it'll save me from having to have surgery (im broke broke haha)

Pro tip, test the Temp with the front of your hand, not back. There is a lot more temperature receptors there that resembles your eyelids compared to the back

I have been successful using a cloth, hot / warm tap water 5 min bid. Bent over & salt added to water. Then gentle massaging to a count of 100. 1 tsp salt . I can add boiling water carefully to keep temp up.. I like the moisture.

Great tips, alot of people don't know what to do when given instructions at the eye dr. But I use the sock with rice but I make sure I put enough rice so its enough to cover both eyes. I've also used this method for almost 2 years and havent gotten an infection by using a clean sock that I dont use anymore and wash it every few days.

Thank you for your videos. Even though this one is a few years old, it's relevant. I got an Optase mask, its great. It goes across the bridge of my nose for a bit of added comfort. I had Lasik surgery about a month ago and my eyes are so dry now. Instead of spending more money on many many eye drops and using the horrible medicated drops, I decided to try a mask. It's doing wonders. Less dryness throughout the day. I use it twice a day.

Eye think you are amazing with all of your advice! Currently using a heating pad wrapped in a pillowcase ensuring it is not too hot. I do not have a microwave! Sometimes, also a warm washcloth under the heating pad. I think it is helping...no worse....a bit better!!!

I have been given eye pad for heat compress for my dry eyes and help with my blocked tear ducks. That constantly give one eye a forever drip and the heat pack has helped beyond belief. I’m totally shocked how it’s helped immediately.

My ophtho told me to fill an old sock with rice, tie it off and microwave it for 35-40 seconds, then apply it to my eyes. It works great - just make sure it's not too hot. It conforms to your eyes. No mess.

I have chronic dry eye and chronic inflammation in both eyes, due to having multiple surgeries. 13 surgeries total. My eye Dr told me of the Bruder mask yesterday, going to pick one up.

Wow. Regarding all the information he is giving us - another example of how we do not get things explained to us so we understand. I now realize that tears have a number of important components and where they come from. Eye doctors have addressed my dry eyes as "well, it happens" Then, they want to prescribe long-term medications. Not doing that. Now I know I can (I hope) get those oil glands moving and feel better. Maybe videos like this is why "professionals" are upset because we are learning about how to take care of our bodies and say NO to medicine all the time. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait to do compress and massage.

Hot compress that I use is Wahl heating massager. Heat for 5 to 10min each eye. About a minute to 30 seconds on massage.

Q: How often?? Fantastic video, I purchased one of these microwaveable eye compresses and LOVE it! I was using a hot wet washcloth which is a mess, less effective, and you almost have to burn the skin of your eyelid to get it hot enough - then it cools off in about 45 seconds. Question please: How often should I do the warm eye compress and express the oil from the glands, for routine good eye maintenance? Once per day, every other day, once per week?? Your thoughts please, and thank you again for these videos!

I have a Bruder and a Manta mask with a set of cool rings and a set of warm rings. I much prefer the warm rings with the Manta. They do not put any pressure on the eyeball and really help.

GLA from blackcurrant seed oil, New Zealand variety is also noticably good for dry eyes. Dr. recommended it when I first opted for hard rgp lenses. Great vid, I was looking for this to massage out my ciliary spasm. Too much close work spasms the focusing muscle & "locks" in nearsightedness.

I use the rice bag method but instead of using a sock I use womens ankle high nylons. Place enough rice in the nylon to cover one eye and then tie a knot tpin the nylon. Repet for the second eye. I then place eash of them in a plastic bag, wrap a warm moist wash cloth around the two eyebags and hold them against my eyes. Cheap and works well.

Very informative thank you. I have MGD. my Dr advised me to use warm compress twice daily. I came across a study that says warm compress and eye lid massage could cause corneal deformation. My question is. How frequent should one do it and still be safe? Is daily safe? When does it cause corneal deformation? I would appreciate your response. Thank you

I was diagnosed with MGD 3 months ago and really did not have bad irritation and redness UNTIL I started using heating compress, using the Occu foaming cleanser and doing massage. This is frustrating because these are all the things that I have been told to do to manage this disease but my eyes look more red and irritated than before.

Wow glad to watch this video and hear about getting a blur vision after a 10mn session. One of the reasons why I stopped doing it. But makes total sense and I’m gonna start doing it again. Doctor thank you so much for the video. I'm feeling very discomfort, pain in my eye. Due to lock down I can't visit to any eye clinic. My eye nerve are red or there are fine red lines in my eye. What should I do at this time to relief from pain?

You can try water vapour. Boil water into bowl. Lean head over it with towel over head. This will heat the oil in the lid glands that are blocked. Massage the lids towards eyelashes. Personally I then soak cotton bud in saline eye wash and run along the lid margins removing any debris.

I use a facial steamer instead of a compress. It maintains a steady, high-enough temperature with plenty of moisture. I'd really appreciate your opinion on this.

I used to do this too. But I stopped because I was unaware of how hot the steamer was on my eyes. I don't really have any complaints about it. I just made the decision to stop using it.

I have dry eye because I have sjogrens which is when your immune system attacks your tear glands and saliva glands. Warm compresses give me pretty good temporary relief

a wet washcloth in the microwave for about 30 seconds or more will get the cloth plenty hot and you can do it repeatedly for cheap...

I bought the Bruder eye mask, seems great, though due to my other issues (congenital glaucoma [stable], high myopia, colobomas, etc) I am fairly worried about increasing IOP by having the weight of the mask resting on my eyes. I am guessing the weight of the mask isn't sufficient to cause any issues there but thought it was worth an ask. Also, I have a crazy question. I have noticed that some pillows seem to almost cause pressure on the side of my eye while sleeping. Not sure why it took 30 years to notice this, I have since switched to a firmer pillow that doesnt allow the material to sink down and cause that sensation of pressure....thankfully I have had no ill effects but wonder if this transitory compression could lead to problems later in life?

Doc what if the glands are blocked? Solid white stripes in my bottom inside the eye. Will not shift 🙏🏼eyes are swollen and sore underneath causing bags. When I put heat on the area they swell even more! Ice the same. I waited 7 months for optgamolgy appointment they just said my eyes were fine keep doing warm compresses. Docs don’t seem interested in MGD

Yes daily just like cleaning your teeth. I use warm water vapour. Boil water and put in bowl. Head over bowl with towel over head. The vapour infiltrates the glands in lids better than hot compress in my opinion.

Should you instill eye drops *before* or *after* using the mask? Btw,I like the good *amount* of information you give about the formation of oils! I'd wondered where the three different components of the tear film were formed. Can you also explain where the aqueous and mucin layers of the tear film are produced?

Why not both? More is more with the eye drops he recommended that help the tear film from various mechanisms.

I find from here and other sources that the components of the tear film (lipid, aqueous, mucin) come from:: lipid (oil): meibomian glands in eyelids, exiting at margins aqueous (water): lacrimal glands, located at upper lateral side of eye mucin (sticky): goblet cells in the conjunctival epithelium www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7169288/

Just found your channel by accident ( the good type of accident), just one question, if you don't have any type of eye problem, is it still beneficial to do this? I have always believed that prevention is the best tactic to keep healthy. peace and love. . . real or imagined cheers from Canada.

Hey Nemo! Very happy you found the channel! And thanks for commenting. Yes the warm packs are beneficial even if you don't have any active disease. I find them very relaxing and normal aging is a cause for the Meibomian glands to break down. So melting those oils to prevent them getting clogged up will in turn help prevent future dry eye disease. Peace and Love to you back! BTW where in Canada?

I bought the Bruder Moist Heat Compress but I don't have a microwave, is there any other way I could heat it?

Question: hey i use celluvisc Refresh eye drops 4x a day for my dry eyes, if i use the Bruder mask, should i be using it between drops or right after i apply my drops?

I love your resource links and I have logged everything for now and future reference How long does the Bruder mask last Mine is a year old You mentioned washing it Really Ok so you mean just spot washing correct I cover mine with a thin clean piece of organic cotton to keep it clean And of course keeping the cotton clean

Question, do the glasses 🤓 with the pinholes in eye lenses help with eye vision or pinhole glasses?

Well the pinhole effect can give sharper vision if the cause of the blurred vision is refractive, otherwise they do not correct anything and do not "improve" vision.

Since you would have oil on your eyes after using the Bruder mask, would it be ok to use an eye wash to clean your eyes or would that be counterproductive?

Hey thanks for the comment and concern. Technically the video is not sponsored and I would share the video even if it did not go to any affiliate commission (I offer that so I can hire video editors so I can make more educational content - otherwise too time consuming). Many people online don't address affiliates and I just want to be open about it. OMG I was about to comment on his eyes. As I was just reading the rave reviews on Amazon for Lumify and just saw this product at Costco to night,I wanted to ask you Dr.Allen,what you think of these drops.Then when I came to this video I was also struck by how white your eyes are and wondeing if you use Lumify also,lol. Specifically for those of us with dry eyes,blurred vision due to cateracts and other vision problems,does Lumify cause the dryness to worsen or cause other negative effects while simultaniously brightening the whites of ones eyes?
