I went to an estate sale recently and instead of finding priceless trifles, I found some romex solid core copper wire and some extension cords. I also scored some brass fittings and copper pipe.
We lived next door to a electric utility company and you wouldn't believe what they threw out. Copper wire cut-offs, brass fittings and big insulators with brass fittings and graphite spacers. My father went through their dumpster about evety day for over 20 years. When he passed I took the scrap in by the truck load, when the final tally came up it was over $10,000 !
Great profit margin! A couple months ago I went to a EMG sale to look at motorcycle parts that turned out not to be there. I ended up buying a 26" x 7 1/2ft folding mobility/loading ramp that people were walking up into one of the outbuildings. I paid $60 for it, and sold it 3 days later on Craigslist for $150. Keeping my mind and eyes open to opportunity paid me $90.

Some people close to me have hinted they think I could be a hoarder. I'm not, but I probably flirt a little too close to the line. I just sit on things a little longer than most. Jake if you soak the copper pipe in vinegar it will come back shinny this way you could sell it on craigs list for more than what you could get for it at the scrap shack!!!!
It's better than money. The value of almost every metal is growing while almost all currencies are decreasing. Money is for spending, metal is for saving.
This is exactly what some of us call black gold...have burned hundreds and hundreds of generators and starters out in the old days....only then you will know the true meaning of "black gold" sorta like working at a charcoal plant.
Don't give up, there are major craigslist trolls out there. Just write a nice polite ad without all caps or anything offensive. If it gets taken down change it a little and post again. Try nearby cities too.
troww zers time is worth something, before I was old enough to get a job I used to haul a big load of scrap each year, and made around 350$ a year which was a lot when I was 11, you have to remember that time is worth something, and to strip all of it it just wouldn't be worth the extra 15$
A lot of this scrapping is incredibly wasteful. The wire could be reused (as long as it hasn't been overheated and the insulation isn't cracked or hard), the brass fittings could certainly be reused (those older brass valves are far better than the new slave-labor garbage from china, they just need to be repacked) and the pipe is practically new (aside from a little storage wear). Those brass valves alone are probably worth hundreds of dollars these days if you just repack them and use them instead of wasting them, one new brass valve from china (which is about the only thing available these days) can cost $20-30 and won't last very long at all. This is just very depressing.

I wanted to calculate the value without any additional labor. I know I could get more if I stripped it, but then again I could get even more if I melted it down and cast a pretty poodle sculpture out of it :) My goal was to figure the value for just the trip to the sale.
You drove 40min. Wasted gas,time,and paid $5 for what you could've found in the trash! I made $120 in 3 hours diggin in the trash yesterday.... Not counting the new pair of jordans and 2 lawnmowers that are now for sale on Craigslist! Plz keep scrapping that way your saving the goods for me!
Yeah jake I'm on house arrest for selling drugs which is why I only had 3 hours (job search) alot of people think like you but then they don't even realize they're buying shit from the trash when I sell it to them. You can make ur own choice I made 100 an hour that day! Which I really good but I usually clear 600 a day. I wear nice Jays all my clothes are expensive shit and I don't pay a dime. I sell tons of clothes/shoes/everything what happens to all the drug dealers shit when the landlord moves all his shit out when he goes to jail? That's right it goes in the trash than to me. You can assume what u want idc treasure hunting to me I fun and easy money. I'm not the only 1 doin it
Selling drugs doesn't pay forever in 30 and been caught multiple times the jail time/house areest/ probation cost more than what your making... When I did it I made more than lawyers and didn't get outta bed for 300 a day. If you got time to shower or sleep for more than 3 hours a day your hustles weak! Your going to have to do something legit 1 day and I've found my niche. Think about it! Or 1 day after waking up in prison you'll wish you had
Jake I'm glad your joking bro. At 14 I was selling weed to the neighborhood lol. It's not a wise choice man. I know that's what you see as money at that age but it comes with a hefty price. My sons close to your age your best bet is to study and come up with a better plan than drugs or digging in the trash I was a loser who thought selling drugs could be done forever and now I have no skills! Live a legit positive life and you'll go farther!
