Would You Live In A Tiny House If You Didn't Have To Work?

We are a family of 3 living in a tiny house (about 500 square feet). It's not optimal for us, but does enable us to live without having to work at a job. Is buying our dream property worth being house poor, and possibly re-entering the rat race?

I'm 73 years old. If I had it to do all over again, I would make do with less in order to spend more time with my wife and kids. I've never been rich, but we were moderately comfortable. Spending time with your wife and kids, you can never lose that. Not telling you what to do, you must do what is right FOR YOU! Just make a choice and be happy with the choice you have made. Be praying for you both. I really, really, really love you, camera girl, and this channel.

I'm 68. We lived in a modest house we could easily afford. Drove used cars and were frugal. We saved aggressively for retirement, managed our own investments prudently and economically. Now we live in a larger house, on 4 acres near the ocean. It is a little bit much to take care of ourselves but we like it and don't want the hassle of moving. We have everything we want that money can provide including a summer cabin at the lake. We have no debts. If I were you guys I would endeavor to live below what your means might allow. Reduce your stress and expenses where you can.

Theres properties outside of where you are that your place would almost if not pay for. It all a matter of if moving out of state works for you. In the end, it's always going to be the both of you agreeing on anything. There's always options pick the one both of "gut feelings" Aligne with. After all when have you ever made a bad decision? OK maybe I should just write directly to camera girl.

Seriously. I work 80 hours a week and don’t even own a house. If you have the means to have more without killing yourself. I would do it. Because I kill myself for just a dream to one day own that tiny house… the way this country is going, one day what you own is all you’ll ever own. So you might as well own more, bigger, and better, while you still can…

You wanted our perspective? Well... here's mine. When I grew up, I lived in a single wide trailer that was falling apart. The plumbing barely worked. The roof leaked. There were literal holes in the floor. My bedroom window was busted out and boarded up. There was no heating or cooling. It was smaller than your house right now, and 1000x worse condition. If I wanted to have something as a child, I got my bum outside and worked for it. I was also home schooled, just like your kid. In fact, I was close to his age when the witch creek fire ripped through my area and nearly burned my shack to the ground. So from my perspective, your home is downright luxurious. Would I give up my current house to go live in that trailer again? No on your life. But... a good quality small home is perfectly doable for me. Your home is very nice and clean. It seems well maintained. I wouldn't give it up. No sir. I would work part time and save my money, and plan on buying land outside of town. But I wouldn't give that house up and exchange it for a monthly house payment. Maybe it'd take me 20 years, but at least I would know that my family was safe in that small house. Especially with the looming housing crisis coming at us like an 20 mule freight wagon. My dad died recently. He had a stroke while he was working. He literally worked until the bitter end. But he was around when I was a kid, and we did so many things together. He was a hard man, but he was a good father. We never got much of a chance to do things as adults. So.... yeah. I think you should be around for your kid. ...and I had a hotwheel collection just like that too.

We live in a larger lake home and would like to get something smaller. Our problem is we looked into moving around covid time and there was literally nothing on the market in the size we were looking for (I mean nothing as in zero.) we couldn't even find a model home to take a tour of in a new development. We ended up refinancing at an insanely low interest rate and now we don't want to move because with the higher interest rates we would be paying more for a smaller house. Bigger isn't always better.

If you don't need to commute to work or school, you could live anywhere. I would personally consider buying an affordable 5 to 10 acres in the south some place in a small town. This way the climate is good most of the year and you can be outside doing stuff or building stuff. You could slowly build structures there as you have time and funds. Start with a shop that you can make basic living accommodations or camp in, then design and build a house. You could do it where you pace yourself in order to pay cash for everything and avoid dealing with banks and mortgages.

Maybe change the state you live in, find a state with loose building regulations and codes and live in an RV for a little while while you build your house. "I tend to want things, regardless of what I have." is the key to the whole thing. Strategically, not having to work means you can spend time stacking pure profit. Debt is slavery. It will crush your spirit. Honestly, in your situation, rent the house out to a nice young couple for a year. Go travel America on your bikes, camp, make videos, come home and realize that you already have more space than 90% of us lulz. Getting a bigger house will make you unhappy and less relatable.

In your situation I'd probably try to make the house you got as suiting as possible with low effort and cost to improve your current living situation. For example you could expand the house by another room or extend the existing Workshop as much as possible to make things more comfortable. If you do the work yourself (you should have the time) and use opportunities e.g on craigslist to get cheap building matierial it wont need to much money. Interesting. I have a few thoughts on it. One, why does it have to be all or nothing approach. Maybe find something just a little better. Maybe something that isn’t everything you want but a few things you really want/need. Maybe stay where you’re at and grind for a few years making and saving up. If your cost are low now, you should be able to save up a lot. Without the dread of “having to work”. Not having to work and working is way better than having to work. I’m kinda in the same situation. I want more land, but the cost In my area is ridiculous for what I want. And I refuse to leverage myself into a lot of debt. Either I buy if/when the market goes down, or I stay where I’m at and keep saving money. Good luck on the decision. I really like your videos. Glad you’re posting more often.

I get it but, maybe some land, paid up front, and build what you want, slowly and pay for it with cash as you go. Also, make sure Jennie and you agree on whatever you do. In the past 35 years (I’m 59) we built a house, made some money, then kept playing the game and since sold one and then bought two other houses. In debt a little (owe 49k) but owe on nothing else but the house. And, yes I would trade down but I would also insist on a good garage as I love my garage. Wife and I would say 1000 square feet, on a decent size land chunk, with a decent garage would be ideal for us. With easy access to stores and such as we definitely don’t want the 20+ miles drive to the hardware store etc. it’s tough decision but don’t go into stupid debt is my main caution.

We live in Vermont off-grid, a small lot. Built a small (not tiny) house, out of mostly used materials from Craigslist and Marketplace. One bedroom, one bath with a loft, on slab totaling 720 Sf. We use a small camping trailer as a guest room/ office. Two small wood stoves for heat, we use a propane tank-less system for hot water, We do have enough space for two 20 foot containers with a truss roof system for storage. Our monthly utility bills are roughly 30 - 40 dollars a month for Propane, and in the winter months, we spend another 40 - 50 for non-ethanol fuel, when we have to run a generator (to charge a solar battery charger to fill our battery bank) when the sun does not come out for 3 or 4 days in a row. Our panels are good enough that on most cloudy days our batteries will take a small charge. Now make my own schedule ( have not worked since the first week in Jan) and work on my terms. Our total monthly expenses are a fraction of my work colleagues who have large expensive houses. I will be happy to answer any questions. KPC

I have been watching your channel for years now but I've never felt more compelled to write a comment, recently this year my wife, myself and my son moved into our own home after saving up the money, we lived with the in laws and managed to save up enough cash for our first time home, it was rough living with the in laws for so long but it was well worth it in the end, that being said the house needed a lot of work, it was built in the early 1900's and in doing the renovations I learned how to be my own contractor essentially, anyways besides all of that I think that if you can buy a homestead for cash and no mortgage it's well worth it, we have 5 acres, a reasonable sized 1500sqft house, a nice 20x20 shop for my mechanic work and zero debt, I know plenty others who are stuck in the rat race and I have to say hands down saving our money and making the move to the new place was well worth it, now if it was the choice between this place with a mortgage or a tiny house I'd go with the tiny house all day long, that's a whole lot of rambling anyways so those are my 2 cents, really love the videos and keep up the good work! 🎉

My wife and I bought a tiny, run down house. I hate it, and we are slowly doing it up into a nicer place, but it’s also allowed me to work less and study so I can get into a new career. Whatever you decide to do, I’ll be here, waiting for your next video to come out. Keep up the great, wholesome content. You guys rock

I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say we love all your content. I agree it can be hard to see what makes the most sense and will make you happy but spending time with your family is important and I totally agree not working and getting those precious years with them is worth more than any job. Perhaps a Patreon or something could be a good fit due to youtubes lack of income these days I would support you even if your videos were only idk fixing broken things around the house.

Been watching you since the concentric slave cylinder replacement on the Ford ranger. Will Never forget the way you humped that little M5OD transmission out of that truck. You've lost a little hair since then. I think we're going to see a lot of crazy things we couldn't even imagine in the next few years. I don't think now is the time to go out on limbs, I think a house of that size is something I would be grateful to have. A makeover and organization can go a long way. If I were you and wanted to make a change, I'd go even tinier and do van life, something that would make me even more free

its a great moment when you have the opportunity to choose what you want to do instead of being stuck in a situation and just doing what you hate in order to get to tomorrow to do it over again forever. You guys have the personalities to crush it on youtube, doing a variety of things, and if you really ran with it could most likely get everything you wanted through it. If i was in the situation, id learn to run with youtube and save up until i could buy a plot of land in a area with low cost of living, an A-frame house kit, and a pole barn, all cash, without ever hafting to go into debt over it or lose time with the family. But do what makes you happiest. Also please link to your other channel when you start uploading on it.

Jake, I too “suffer” from constantly wanting more than I have. Over the past 10yrs my family of 4 has gone from renting a 700sqft living space to owning a 1300sqft home to now owning a 3k sqft home on approximately 2acres. We are not house poor but I have had to go back to work full time since we purchased the latest house. Luckily I got one with my states DOT as a mechanic. As I creep closer to my 40s My dreams of grandeur have started to change. I think a 1500~ sqft home on more acreage is the golden ticket. At least with my family size and our possessions. Good luck to you and Jennifer navigating the choices ahead.

I got a rusty ct90 about 10 years ago and started watching your series on your ct90 restore shortly after. I was making $12.30 an hour as an ER tech. In 2016 I went back to school and became an RN. I thought money was my answer to most of my problems and ended up being a travel RN in trauma centers around the Pacific Northwest during COVID, made over a million dollars in about 4 years, no kidding. It was totally not worth it. I got burnt out, was always away from my family, unhealthy and out of shape. Wish I would have pursued something more fulfilling. Time has become more valuable to me than money.

That must have been a hard grind!! Hopefully you saved enough to make your life better moving forward. As I get older time has become more and more valuable to me too. Love you guys!!! Try keep an open mind and check into something middle of the road. We bought a 1967 2,000 sq ft home on a decent 3/4 acre lot in a suburb of Minneapolis where I can tune our gokart & snowmobiles without complaints, but have to take them up North to my Dad's to ride. What works is I can play baseball catch with my son in the yard and got my wife a large deck & patio, plus built her a raised garden. We are close to having it paid for at $186,000. The memories you'll get from a mid-grade house will be well worth moving out of that tiny house, even if it's a little more work for a while. I moved here from a 12 x 56 ft (672 sq ft) mobile home & don't look back. Treat yourselves to something a little bigger. You're all worth it!!! Your son is too big to keep him locked up in that nursery all his life, you all could use the dental benefits and health insurance a job provides, plus the privacy you'll have to sleep in with camera girl will bless your marriage immensely as well!!!

Sounds like you're not in a bad spot, you've got a roof over your head and food on the table and you get to be a full time dad which is awesome. I can relate to the youtube thing somewhat, I do it as a hobby and have had reasonable success in my niche (my channel isn't as big as yours nor do I rely on it for my only income, but it pays for gas money and whatnot). I think if you keep hitting your stride and finding what content performs well, your channel could put up some seriously big numbers and you'd have more of a financial cushion- you've had several videos pop off in the past, and it's crazy what a good month on youtube can bring. You guys are very likeable and engaging, keep it up!

People love your content, and I believe there is a middle ground in what you want to do. This requires hard work and time and that’s writing up a schedule and planning for more videos with more content. Doing series of bike builds is what peaked my interest in the channel (I bought a kx and fixed it up because of this exact channel. I’d love to see you both chase the RU-vid money with a bit more hunger and urgency and bless us with cooler bike builds and repairs. And in turn get to watch your space grow which could be another thing to document. I just want more JG content.

My wife and I have watched you all for years. We live in Kentucky. It sounds like the cost of living is your biggest enemy and maybe moving east could improve your family's lifestyle. You have plenty of skills to make money with, and I bet your wife does, too. You could do general "handyman work" 4 days a week and make a RU-vid video on the 5th day, and she could do some remote working when she's not homeschooling. Plenty of companies do that now. A lot of people in this area do the same exact thing I'm talking about and have a pretty damn good thing going on. Seriously look into it, guys. My wife and I wanna see you all happy and on RU-vid for a long time, so let's find a good solution to make all of us happy!

7:00 I think you answered your own question. I’m in a home just a hair bigger, I’m the only one that works. We could do a bigger house & yard, but, instead of that, we have a sxs, Harley, a couple 4 wheelers, & a bunch of dirt bikes. I get to ride with my son & watch him race. My kids all have cars & my grandkids have dirt bikes waiting for them when they can touch the ground on them. My wife gets to be with the kids & I do miss things I really wish I didn’t miss by working, but a big house & yard would take away all of my things that make my life worth living. We’d be driving clunkers, no toys to enjoy in the woods & the racetrack, & I’d spend my life accepting overtime offers instead of with my family.

It might be small, but it looks nice despite maybe not being ideal. The only thing I can really say is do what would make you the most happy. Would I trade what I’ve got to downsize and reduce my stress? Yeah, most likely. I’m a single dude with a pretty decent paying job, but that job makes a lot of choices I don’t really like… such as forcing me to drive 45 min through traffic to sit in an office and do exactly what I do when working from home. Spent a number of years in a very competitive housing market attempting to find myself a “forever home.” While I didn’t find such a thing, I did manage to buy a much much more expensive house than I ever previously looked at, mostly because I desperately NEEDED to buy something, and I paid asking price at a time where offers were made at $60k OVER asking price. Am I happy? Thats subjective. Sometime.. Until things happen like, needing to paint the house this spring. I got a quote of nearly $6k to pay someone, so obviously going to do it myself despite the time and difficulty to do so.

Depending on your current monthly mortgage payment, renting out your 'tiny home' could generate some profit. That can be banked for unforseen tiny home repairs... making the property sort of self sustaining... and eventually becoming an income source once a lump sum has been built. On paper, it 'would' be an income source to be applied towards another (larger) property. I would be looking for rural property to build on, then do it in stages: 1. Job to help with payments 2. Find/ purchase property 3. Design your property layout (what's going where) 4. Locate a general contractor...or file to be your own. 5. Look into putting an RV pad, With hookups, on site...if you can purchase a used RV (much cheaper) and set it up for living. 6. Build your shop, and increase your RU-vid efforts to generate more income. 7. Look into modular homes...aka...bolt-together houses. They are just as well built as stick houses, typically less expensive, generally 'smaller' since the sections must be able to travel down the road, and ultimately still provide your family more space than you currently have. I'll be here all week. 🙂
