Footage from the Royal Australian Air Force F-111 retirement ceremony held at RAAF base Amberley on Friday December 3 2010.
Six F-111s took part in the flight along with two F/A-18F Super Hornets.
The RAAF bought 24 F-111s which went into service in 1973 as a replacement for the Canberra Bomber.
After 37 years of service the F-111 is now being replaced by the F/A-18F Super Hornet.

I was there that day as a proud 6SQN member in service dress on the runway to salute them off. I worked on these babies from 2007-THE END. Aircraft Technician, loved every minute I spent with the pigs. Got into every engine intake and exhaust to check for damage, opened up the engine bays to service them and did regular 'Zone 3' engine runs at test cell which was the most amazing experience, 100,000 lockwires to do and used about 20 tonnes of goop to hold everything together. What a beast, what a pure beautiful aircraft. I love it. I'm on Super Hornets now .... NO COMPARISON!

1000% mate. We are disarmed right now. We have nothing at all to do long range strike attacks. And no subs doing a suicidal attack fire harpoon missiles is retarded. The F111's should have been replaced with a medium bomber . We a facing a extremely tough time ahead & need a F111 type aircraft asap. Off the shelf and easy to incorporate RIGHT NOW . Only the F15 strike eagle comes to mind of off the shelf. Or ballistic missiles. We need long range & medium strike capabilities.

@@TheBenchPressMan I don't believe it's " THE ANSWER " but it's a very good initiative to work towards. The " QUAD " ( India, Australia, Japan & USA ) is a very good thing, IMO. I would really like to see a long range strike system or systems added to Australia's arsenal.

Great aircraft, very elegant. But their time did come, they've been working since '73. Retired in 2010, thats 37 years of great service to this country, a long life for aircraft.

Skys without them are just not the same. I wish they could have done one more airshow circuit in the US one more time, before they retired them. The RAAF suffered one of its worst peacetime accidents when an F-111G fighter-bomber from No 6 Squadron crashed on Pulau Aur, a tiny island in the South China Sea lying 65 kilometres off Mersing, on the east coast of Johor, Malaysia. The aircraft (A8-291) was one of two making a simulated night-time strike against British, Australian and Singaporean warships during a Five Power Defence Arrangement exercise, when it struck tall trees on a ridge line of the island’s peak. The aircraft tumbled through the air for a further mile before crashing into the jungle. Owing to the inaccessibility of the site, most of the wreckage of A8-291 was left at the scene, with a memorial established to the two crew members - Squadron Leader Stephen Hobbs and Squadron Leader Anthony Short - who were killed in the accident.

Question why did they have to dump fuel like that, and what made it catch on fire? Such a beautiful plane!
@tomcline5631
@tomcline5631 3 года назад
They have the capability to dump fuel,to reduce weight. It's coincidental that when dumping fuel,they light the afterburners and it ignites the fuel as it's being dumped. The pilots learned this early on and it became the 111's signature airshow trick!
@dahawk8574
@dahawk8574 3 года назад
@@tomcline5631, and to be clear, the need to dump fuel is so you can better handle emergencies. Like losing an engine on takeoff. You can make a much safer landing when not heavyweight. For anyone concerned about impact to the environment, dumping fuel has a much lower impact than crashing the entire jet into the ground.

I want one but with the upgraded engines that the F-14 got. They both had the same engine when new then the tomcat got an upgraded engine with more thrust and fuel economy. I wonder if there are any engines that could push one to super cruse. It would be the coolest private exmilitary jet to own by far then and even without the upgrade it would be an awesome jet to own because it can cross the Atlantic without refueling and you sit side by side so your passenger will be more comfortable. But if you could somehow get engines to push it to super cruise then you could have a very decent range because of its internal bays that you can put fuel tanks into. And that would keep it as aerodynamic as possible so you'd have a decent range. I'm not selfish and I wonder so pls world granted me this wish. Lol. I'd have to win a massive lottery.

Yeah, an old post, but still as ignorant as the day it was written! The decision to retire the F-111 fleet was made in 2003 under the (shock - horror) *_Liberal_* government of _John Howard._ You didn't _really_ believe it possible for Labor to come into power, decide to ditch the F-111, and effectively decommission them (including the lovely ceremony above) all in the space of 3 years, did you?!? There are _many_ reasons to criticise our conservative government's shitty decision to scrap the F-111, and it's sad to realise they're forever grounded. As a child, I would gaze awestruck into the sky, fascinated by these magnificent machines and hoping for the bonus of a sonic boom (they often seemed to oblige)!

thats actually a myth, they weren't that much more to run then an F/A-18F (about 50 grand an hour). The main reason why they were retired was the extensive amount of maintainace required to keep them in the air, and the fact that the giant support for the swing wing only only rated to 6 or 7 thousand flight hours. The entire aircraft would need to be stripped down to even access it
