F-117 Nighthawk Shootdown over Serbia, 1999 - Animated

During the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, a USAF F-117 Nighthawk stealth aircraft conducts a strike mission into Serbia. Notably difficult to detect on radar, the commander of a Serbian Surface to Air Missile battery knows the Nighthawk is coming, but the aircraft's stealth technology "should" make the engagement almost impossible.

I am Serbian, and this video: 1. Is so very well done and; 2. Brings back a lot of awful memories. My first memories from childhood were of my father frantically running down the stairs toward the basement and carrying me in his arms as the air raid sirens blared around... 1980-2000 were afwul years for the Balkan people... The fratricidal wars we fought were pointless, instigated by fascist paramilitaries and ultranationalist politicians on all sides, while the common people just trying to live their lives suffered and grieved. May this never occur again. I don't understand why we still fight in the comments like we, the common people, have ever gained anything from the hate brought on by corrupt, power-crazed politicians.

This is an example of why stealth is not an excuse to just get lazy when executing strikes in a contested environment. The combination of factors leading up to this shoot-down, like flying the same corridors over and over an the lack of EW, lead the SAM operator to get the jump on the F-117 (props to that guy). Stealth should be used in conjunction with other techniques to increase the survivability of aircraft. OTOH, one should not use this incident as an example of stealth being worthless.

It’s not the job of mainstream media to go into this level of detail. This is for aviation geeks, like us. Furthermore, there were so many different stories about this incident at the time, they could only go with what the most credible source was telling them. The F-117 was still a pretty closely guarded aircraft at that time so few people who knew anything about it were likely to be talking, especially since this was a moment of some embarrassment. The rumours on the internet at the time were far worse. I remember a couple of irate and rather self-righteous Americans posting that the Air Tasking Order had been given to the Serbs by ‘the duplicitous French’.

One more important thing to add: The sizes and shapes of the F117 was more or less public - This is why commander Zoltan Dani was able to fine-tune the radio locator to the aircraft. (He was investigating on the plane from '98 onward, he calculated the necessary frequencies to monitor it and he did the frequency-altering without permission on one of his radar's frequency. After that his SAM battery was able to follow the F117's when those were in range).

But it's fine cos NATO is a defensive alliance.. from wiki: The bombing caused damage to bridges, roads and railway tracks, as well as to 25,000 homes, 69 schools and 176 cultural monuments.[180] Furthemore, 19 hospitals and 20 health centers were damaged, including the University Hospital Center Dr Dragiša Mišović.[181][182] NATO bombing also resulted in the damaging of medieval monuments, such as Gračanica Monastery, the Patriarchate of Peć and the Visoki Dečani, which are on the UNESCO's World Heritage list today.[183] The Avala Tower, one of the most popular symbols of Belgrade, Serbia's capital, was destroyed during the bombing As for that bomb bay door narrative, which has been widely accepted and told again and again. Worked for a while with the guy that was his wingman that mission - he was generally tight lipped about the incident, but did say that that was the third consecutive night flying the exact same profile. He also told a tale of an epsiode of losing IFF near Aviano, and opening the bay doors so radar could see them. On a visit in Germany, also got a chance to speak to former East German SAM operators, that related that the radars were not their only trick - and when the attack angle/route of the targets was known of surmised. they often used visual tracking before turning on the trackers at the last moment, when it was too late for the targets to evade. They mentioned that it was one of their highest percentage tactics (exercise scoring).

Tbh Serbs are well known for hospitality and being friendly. I’m sorry that some people think something twisted about them when 30.000 out of 7.600.000 in 1990 went to war and over 20% of the 30.000 weren’t even Serbs inside the army. We should remember that one dictatorial government doesn’t represent a population, especially for facts that happened several generations ago.

This bothers me because we were being pounded hard but when we have a chance to pound back - we didn't. More pissed at Serbian leadership than NATO/US. We also captured couple of US Army scouts in Kosovo and let them go via rev Jessie Jackson mediation. Sounds like our stupid leaders tried to suck up to our enemy rather than fight. I was unfortunately involved in this conflict and was disappointed in my homeland's Army and leaders as much I hated NATO for unprovoked attack.

I had the honor and privilege of meeting Dale Zelko when I was 17 and about to enter my first enlistment with the USAF. He came to Hill AFB to give a talk and share his experience of this shoot down. My dad found out and asked if I wanted to go. After his talk he did a meet and greet with the audience. I asked him if he had any advice for a young man about to enter military service and he told me, “never pass up any opportunity to learn or to train, even if it doesn’t sound fun.” I took that to heart and it made my 10 years in the Air Force so much better. Thank you, Col. Zelko.
