The F3 did a sterling job in its main role which was a relatively long legged interceptor. Later in life its Radar, Missiles, etc were pretty good. It wasn't really ever a dogfighter in design, build or usage. For going out over the north sea and picking up the bears and similar, I suspect we could have kept it in service for the work it was often doing. As a stopgap design, overall it did ok.

Oooh now, does a Shar look good and therefore fly good? Ooh. Now that's a question. I'd say that any Harrier looks purposeful, focused. As does an A-10. Harrier's the best CAS platform. Hands Down. And the Shar, even the old FRS1, certainly did a number on its enemies at sea. But I'm biased, I grew around them. To me, Fighter Bomber _means_ Harrier.

Tornado was a lot more underpowered than the F-14A so not correct to say it was "similar" to F-14A. The performance difference was still quite big especially at higher altitude where the Tornado engines really suffered being tuned for low level. Also, the F-14's 60% lift came from the central "pancake" of the airframe. The official climb rate, for example of the F-14A was 3 times faster than that of the Tornado F3. Also, F-14A could re-gain energy a lot faster after pulling sustained high G turns. Not to mention, As Roy McIntyre in Tornado said, the F-14 in any version could turn a lot tighter and faster than Tornado.

I think he was being polite. It was a great interview! Mike, a request is to ask how quickly dogfighting skills go away. So many pilots talk about how perishable they are. But do they go away in days, weeks, months? Do they come back? What about bombing or CAS skills? Just some suggestions (and yeah, I've asked in Q&As without good answers). Great stuff overall though, Steamer seems like a really nice guy.
@2ZZGE100
@2ZZGE100 2 года назад
@@davidsmith8997 I totally got the same. He was being very nice and did not want to put down the Tornado especially with the interviewer being a huge fan of it (national pride as well). Don't get me wrong, Tornado was fantastic down low through terrain for air-to-ground. It would scream and go very fast down low for the mission it was created for (much like the F-111), but the performance envelope for F-14A was far from being "similar". Not even close.
@toomanyuserids
@toomanyuserids 2 года назад
The tornado much more lacking in power but the F-14 tf30s needed more care in control. The B/D a different story.
@2ZZGE100

Absolutely great stuff. Thanks so much. I can imagine that jets like the Tornado and Tomcat had a character that perhaps is lacking in some of the latest iterations of fighter jets. The same way an oldtimer still appeals in ways a modern car can't. This is how I interpreted his comment about the Super Hornet at the end, 39:40, "nice little jet" 😂.
