I miss the Tomcat. I was an OS in 88-90 on CVN69. We lost our A-7’s to 18’s and started using 18’s for CAP to see what they could do. The 18’s just didn’t have anywhere near the capabilities of the 14. I went on to fly professionally at the airlines and got to fly with ex Navy, Marine Corp, Air Force, Coast Guard etc and even some German Luftwaffe Pilots. Lots of great stories out there from an amazing time in world history. Thanks for taking the time to interview these folks. I don’t know if there are any WAC’s from WW2 still alive. I flew with one years go when I was getting my private pilots license. I cant remember her name, I was young and didn’t really understand the significance of her life and so I didn’t take advantage of the opportunity to ask her questions beyond my little focused world. If there are any still alive, try to see if you can get an interview.

@Matt Thacker As new guy flying Phantoms I gave a briefing that paraphrased an earlier aviation sentiment that if you are going to hoot with the owls you better be able to scream with the eagles. I had done my share of hooting with the owls...so Hooter i became.

Patrick Maher (Edited, sorry my original post was in such a hurry, what a mess....I cleaned it up a bit and added some context). I spent a year around Navy Pilots (cats and gear CVN69) and then after my enlistment, the Navy paid for all of my college, I feel like I will owe the Navy and tax payers for the real gift of service and the benefit of a mostly free education. I, like so many others loved aviation as far back as my earliest memories. My dad owned a super cub and I remember flying my first time at age 3. Right before I enlisted I took my private license exam right after I hit 40 hrs and turned 18. A big portion of my flight time was at Delta Connection Comair. Anyway, I flew around 6500 hours before I lost my medical, most in the CRJ 200 and EMB-120. At the time I was hired, a large number of our senior pilots were ex Vietnam era pilots. I never found a Navy pilot I didn’t enjoy flying with. I think the Navy really did a great job picking and developing Leadership and flying skills. I’m not knocking any other service. Maybe had so flown long enough I’d had come across someone from the Navy who wasn’t fun to fly with but, in my case they were great. I need to go back and review my logbook. I flew with a man who had flown F-4’s and F-14’s. I remember his story..... he was in college at a university in Columbus Ohio. He use to study at the airport where he could watch aircraft takeoff and land. One day a Navy recruiter walked up to his car, knocked on the door and said something like this: why watch when Incan help you fly! This man had a pretty low GPA, he said he was a B, C student. It didn’t matter, it was 1965-66 and the military needed pilots. Next thing he knew he had competed primary near the top of his class and then advanced then on the f-4’s. He was so humble and kind. He would allow me to ask question and dig about his time in the Navy......... I also flew quite a lot with one Marine pilot from that time frame Pat Skeldon. He flew F-4’s also. If Intemember correct about 300 combat missions. He passed away several years ago from a rare form of Lou Gehrig's disease. His obit is online if you search his name. What an amazing kind a wonderful to fly with man.

Hi Jon. Several years ago there was an F 14 on display at Pioneers Museum located in El Centro, California. It has since been relocated. Fantastic interview with an engaging and knowledgeable chap. I'd love to have got him hs 190 experience then put him in a room with Winkle Brown to see where the shared experience went. When the Wall came down, UK military TV, Scene Here screened a programme about the Luftwaffe learning and flying the MiG. I was stunned by the whole concept and one of them made a comment which stuck with me - Before we met the MiG we wanted the Typhoon. Now we know the MiG we know we NEED the Typhoon!"

If you know anything about me, you know I love this jet. I love, love, love the F-14 Tomcat. I remember being a kid and my dad saying, "Taylor, I want you to watch this movie called Top Gun. It has the coolest airplanes in the world." I was hooked. And then I have memories of my dad taking me to a few air shows. The highlights, of course, were the F-14 demonstrations. The Blue Angel's were amazing, the finesse and precision always spectacular. However, the Tomcat was the jet that everyone stood up for and crowded the gates delineating the observation areas. My dad would have both of us pack bits of cotton or drinking straw wrappers in our ears to protect our hearing. Even through the makeshift earmuffs, I could hear the Tomcat scream by. Once, I got brave and removed one of the ear plugs out as the Tomcat made one of its passes. The roar of the Tomcats engines as it rocketed by seemed to rattle the molars out of my skull. The force of the sonic wave could be felt in my spine and lungs, freezing my breath in my chest. My excited little hands would white knuckle the top of the gate or clasp my father's steadier hand, for fear that the force would send me off into the heavens as well. When I got a little older and would ride my bike around the neighborhood, I would fancy that I was in a cockpit of a super-sonic, swept-wing fighter jet, shooting down imaginary MiGs. My driveway was the deck of an aircraft carrier. Clearly, my dreams were high up in the clouds. Sadly, the Tomcat platform would reach a tragic end. The jets that didn't get donated to various museums would be taken to the shredders to prevent black marketers from selling parts to the only country that still flies the jet - Iran. However, a group of dedicated people from companies like Heatblur and Eagle Dynamics brought the Tomcat back to life in a virtual world via the Digital Combat Simulator. Now, I get to simulate an "as-true-to-life-as-publicly-available-information-can-be-simulated" (a small amount of the Tomcat info is still classified) F-14 with virtual reality goggles and a flight stick and throttle in my hands. I remember the first time launching from a carrier, fully immersed in an F-14 cockpit. As I saluted the crew on the ground and my plane hurtled off the deck, I felt a familiar feeling in my hands. Sneaking a glance in the space between my nose and the goggles, I saw white knuckles clutching the stick and throttle set up. This time, however, it was me controlling the Tomcat, and I really felt as I pulled back on the flight stick, that I was soaring to the heavens. In that moment, my sky-high dreams from childhood had come true.

US Mile used to hold its annual standing mile events there before moving to Victoria. TF's were subject to snuffing out with radical throttle angle changes. Once the 110's were retro'd fitted all the engine problem's disappeared. You could "Yank and crank" with no real concern with the blowers behind you. "Danger" Ranger...did a WesPac with them in 89...

Yeah, the GE-110 made 40% more thrust as well giving F-14 a better than 1:1 TWR even with weapon's load. 42,000 lbsf for the TF-030 vs 58,000 lbsf for the GE-F110

23:40 The A and B had the HUD displayed on the center panel of the front canopy section. The A Upgrade, B upgrade, D(R) (Ds converted from As), and Ds had the Sparrowhawk HUD which used a combining glass configuration. Part of the reason why the original HUD wasnt always perfectly on was because of the panel of the canopy it was displayed on flexing at different airspeeds. That panel flexing was also the reason for the tomcats max speed being Mach 2.34. It couldve gone faster but that panel was flexing so much that they decided not to go any faster than the design specification of mach 2.34.

Agreed on both. Dale could push the F-14 like no other (even the A version). "Hoser" Satrapa has some very interesting stories to tell about the AIMEVAL/ACEVAL and rivalry with the F-15 crew. Also, I read he pulled 10G on the F-14A and stil remained conscious.
@dannyboyemt
@dannyboyemt 6 лет назад
Roger Mahajan actually the TACT range Hoser was on registered 12.3g asymmetric on the F14. His RIO was sent to medical for a neck injury because of it and temporarily grounded. The F14 he was in had to be taken out of service and X-rayed for damage. It was later put back into service, and according to Hoser it didn't even have a loose rivet. Dale Snodgrass's father was a test pilot for the F14 and later told him to fly it like a 13g aircraft.
@rogermahajan7586
@rogermahajan7586 6 лет назад
Wow! That is incredible info. I do know Dale said in an interview, he pulled 10G turn in the gulf war while trying to dodge a missile. Never knew Hoser actually went as high as 12.3G and still did not get G-LOC'ed. That is crazy.
@dannyboyemt
@dannyboyemt 6 лет назад
Roger Mahajan yeah I recall reading that story about Dale as well. I think the reason why they weren't blacking out pulling those type of G's mainly is due to those loads not being sustained G loads. For instance hitting 9Gs isn't going to cause you to black out, but hitting 9Gs and sustaining it for a given amount of time would absolutely cause you to black out. I have no doubt Snort and Hoser experience those G loads but to sustain them would be beyond human physiology.

For being obsolete by the end of the 1970s, the F14 could of been upgraded beyond the F14A+ model or B model. With upgraded avionics, weapons computers and even stealth tech added on. It was still a viable platform at the time of decommission.

Very cool interview. Surprised Jon's issues with TF-030 made him like the F-4 over the F-14 when F-14 even with the older TF-030 engines (due to the brilliance of airframe and variable geometry wings), was a significantly superior performing fighter over the Phantom. Vertical, turn rate , sustained G, instantaneous turn etc.
@jonschreiber4012
@jonschreiber4012 6 лет назад
You are correct in your observation but... The Phantom allowed me to fly as badly as I wanted. Kind of like being a cook versus a chef, the F4 Pilot being a cook and the F-14 Pilot being a chef. An F-4 delivers a good hamburger. An F-14 will deliver you an artisanal beef patty experience. Both good but one more good with F-110 sauce included.
@rogermahajan7586
@rogermahajan7586 6 лет назад
Awesome analogy, Jon. Love it. I became a huge F-14 fan not from "Top Gun", but watching Dale 'Snort' Snodgrass make it dance in the airshows like no other fighter. Still get goosebumps watching videos where an F-14 does a fly-by over a loud crowd of people turning at high banked angle, fly wing swept back and vapor clouds coming off the wings. Cheers!

I guess modern engines don't react so negatively to high AOA. Digital management systems.
@rogermahajan7586
@rogermahajan7586 6 лет назад
Yeah, the TF-030 were susceptible to unpredictable stalls if you rapidly slammed the throttle from idle to full power back to idle at slow speeds with a very high angle of attack. D version was the only one with digital fly controls. B/A+ version in the 80s had the GE-F110, but hydraulic systems. Though, they did install bypass valves in the late 80s on the TF-030, that increased the stall margin. The reason was, slow air not directly coming into intakes since those engines were not designed for extreme maneuverability. With the by-pass valves, you can find test videos of F-14A doing very high angle of attack maneuvers at slow speeds The new GE-F110 engines had no such issues. Pilot could do whatever he/she wanted to. The pilot could slam the throttle from idle to full power back to idle at high angle of attack at any speed. Also, they gave it a very high thrust-to-weight ratio better than 1:1 in full combat configuration at 58,000 lbsf (compared to 42,000 lbsf of thrust) and a 60% improvement in time to altitude.

Thanks so much for your time and reply. I have read Scream of Eagles the Top Gun Story and One Day in a long war. It made me wonder, The USAF had the Late Gen. Daniel (Chappie ) James and many others on RU-vid and on like. Well I have been asking of Black Navy F-4 Pilots N Rio's and coming up with nothing! Like they didn't exist! I'd love to hear there stories. I met one Dosen on the U.S.S. Hornet that knew a guy who became a F-14 CO. But think my friend has passed away. But you do conferem my thoughts, all though few if any there were some African American F-4 Pilots and Rio's there! I've been out of the Nav since 1988 Honorable of course, but as a American Veteran you've help made me feel good about myself and a possible hidden history I was sure did exist! Thank You so much! I have all those books on my shelves. I will say when I look back at the level of diversity of the aircrew in the squadrons I was In.... I will say they got more diverse and remained operationally effective as I got older. I had more diverse students as an instructor than I recall having diverse fellow students as I went through training. I think in my time Chuck Nesby and Donnie Cochran were the African American Fighters Pilots that went on to squadron / wing command.

Good to hear and not surprised! With the Riots on the U.S.S kitty hawk, and Connie in 72 things had to change. Or so that is what seemed to happen as order Admiral Zumwalt. But not just the Navy! In the seventies doors opened for African Americans like never before. I'm so tired of anything involving Black sailors and Officers being surrounded with negativity. I'd love to hear from some of the Officers you mentioned if that's possible, maybe write a book of my own in their honor. Feel free to give my email to them or anyone at this point. cvette79blu@hotmail.com. I live near Moffett Field, and would love to meet you someday! Your a real positive experience to me. what are the major design differences between the F 14 and F 15 as they look very similar
@jonschreiber4012
@jonschreiber4012 5 лет назад
The F14 was a Naval Aircraft designed for the mission the Navy executes. The F15 was an Air Force Aircraft that was designed for the mission the Air Force executes. I am not being glib but the missions are quite different and both fighters executed their well.

Could they not have fixed the TF30 issue temporarily by keeping the nozzle open further? It would have reduced the power but lowered the back pressure. It sounds like it was not the intake but the engine control, something easily fixed.

THERES ANOTHER RADIO INTERVEIW, with a f-4 pilot who was in comunicateion with a Trucker on CB crossing the desert. The trucker thought somebody else was a messin with him so there was a very fast rondivue point at 1.2 mach dam nere knock the truck over.
@jonschreiber4012
@jonschreiber4012 4 года назад
While the story is intriguing, I do not know of any F-4 that had access to 27-ish MHz radio communications. That said I also do not doubt there are truckers that experienced a fighter jet turning right in front of them as the fighter was flying an approved low level route. I have done such a thing, last I saw the truck was upright.

There were a few men of color in my time. A close friend of mine Lou Eames was black and flew A7s. Of course Donnie Cochran came out of fighters. There was a black Rio in VF-1 when I was in VF-2 that was a great guy, A friend of mine from Beeville flew A-6s and went to test pilot school was black but at this particular moment I can only think of his first name Keith. He is also the only pilot I have ever known to give himself a call sign that stuck.

Grew up admiring tomcats so I was looking forward to hearing what former pilots had to say about it. Sadly, I'm disappointed because none of them seem that enthusiastic when talking about it, nor do they seem to miss flying them very much. For example, this guy rather talk about old F-4's and his fondness for them rather than his experiences with the F-14. He also speaks of it with a little twinkle in his eye. Those that flew tomcats after its engine upgrade seem to repeat these same sediments. F-8s, F-4s, and F11s I have absolutely no interests in. Many of those jets they admire were basically target practice for russian made migs, although, technically we had better kill ratios, but still. If I have to choose an older plane I'd go with the A-5 vigilante since it was the one jet that caused panic throughout soviet russia, which led to them using it as the inspiration/basis for their mig-25 (little tidbit most dont know).

Probably just an F-14A thing. Look up Fighter Fling 2004 if you've never seen it before. 2004 was the last year. I don't think anyone was thinking about F-4s in that. Edit 9:04 in, the refueling basket.

I plead guilty as charged but in my defense, weak as it may be, all airplanes have thier won personality and can be appreciated on thier own. I just happen to have more time in the smoking thunderhog (Phantom) than anything else I have flown so it is more ingrained I guess. Note: I never got to see an A-5 fly in real time, I bet it was a beast behind the boat.

Jon Schreiber ...Wow, how unexpected. Talk about being in the presence of greatness!! And no need to defend or explain yourself, Mr. Schreiber. What I, we, wouldn't give to have lived just one day in your shoes during your time as a fighter pilot. Envy is all mine. And just fyi, I meant no disrespect to the F-4 community -- it's an iconic jet all its own. I've only seen a few up close and personal at several air shows in the past but there no substitute for your expertise and experience. Absolutely menacing, if not beautiful aircraft. Loved hearing how former pilots referred to it as being the muscle car of the fighter world. So awesome! Talk about lasting impressions -- guess they all can't be wrong. Anyway, just want to thank you for your service and for taking time out of your schedule to share with us such a priceless interview.
