Over here in the US the interstate highways are constructed with the Eisenhower Interstate System. In times of war sections of every highway are purposely straight for emergency airstrips.
I understand that for every five miles of interstate, there has to be a mile of absolutely straight flat interstate. The Eisenhower Plan. Civilian planes have had to use the interstate as a landing strip in times of emergency. Ike got the idea from the German Autobahn during WWII.
This goes on for training all over Europe. While in Germany there were designated areas of the autobahn that we would occasionally do practice landings on certain areas along the autobahn.
I worked on these in the U S Navy. Our CO once got bitched out for doing 600 in a 250 zone. He went straight back out and did it again that same day.😂😂
I really love the F/A-18D Hornet. They're sexy and really capable of many tasks given. Malaysian Air Force also operates 8 of this beautiful aircrafts. Kudos to Finnish Air Force. Peace from Malaysia🇲🇾.
@@filgiupo4853 Fa-18 is a carrier capable mach 1 fighter bomber, Mirage is a mach 2 dogfighter, F-15 is a nearly mach 3 fighter bomber, all very different roles to play
I love how you are so respectful abut these topics, I personally really agree. Istg if you comment this though, there's gonna be at least one person who'll be saying their favourite aircraft is better, especially with the f18. Most people tend to be less respectful about the opinion that an f18 is sexy/beautiful. F18 rocks
@@dragoonTT yes we do, they are protected by UNESCO as some of them are from Communist era something like 50years old and still not replaced (trolol). I wanted to say initially that they wouldn't get to any of our UNESCO highways with those F-16s through our tankodrome roads. Pilot would have been shaken enough until he would get there. On some roads you exhibit 5g loads when you go over bumps. Blyat
One of my most recurring and terrifying nightmares the last 40 years involves this exact scenario and my heart raced a little just watching this. In my dreams I can never clear the electric lines or trees. Nowadays I just force myself awake before even moving down the highway. “Nope, not this time. No way!!” The day I clear those trees and wires will probably be when I do a final check-out of my hospice room.
Get well soon buddy. I have nightmares too, just to let you know. Not the only one sweaty morning welcomes better day than today. Stay well and take care...
"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." I read your comment, a few more, clicked back to YT recommendations ... but could not leave you. Came back. Peace.
Driven on some of these roads in winter. The special runways add another dimension as the highway suddenly gets wider and the road lanes aren't as obvious! Great idea to have a bunch of cheap runways around.
Back in the day, saw an E Jag outrun everything Florida had in it's fleet... clocked over 200 mph on I-4. It was Smokey and the Bandit thing... deliver a case of beer from Tampa to Daytona in one hours time. Female driver...
@@Roboprogs Even navy planes need a catch line to stop in time. Pilot training works up to a point but you can't exceed the limits of the aircraft and expect to live.
@@tomkjr1 from what I have seen (videos) the tail hook and arresting lines stop the planes in about 30 to 40 yards/meters? Perhaps F18s can brake in a few hundred meters (a quarter mile on a highway is not much space to find a straight and clear section.
F18s are popular with Northern countries because the airfields are frozen and the F18s landing gear is reinforced . Only the U.S. lands F18s on aircraft carriers .
It's been done. One of the best things about the Panavia Jaguar fighter bomber was the ability to operate from roads, and there are videos on YT of it doing just that. The F-18 here should be capable of the same thing but it appears they were not setup on the ground for landing. Which begs the question of how the plane got to the takeoff point. But anyway, was all done because NATO assumed Russia would bomb all the airbases the moment a war started. And they would. So the roads were supposed to be an alternative. The problem is, the Russians just added all the suitable roads to the target list. Now what?
I was going to say the Americans forgot to tell them the landing gear retracts, but there was a couple seconds of footage with the gear up, so I guess they know.
Expect great things from the Finns. They took a plane that was rejected by us (Americans) and many others as underperforming, and used one of them to set the record for the most planes ( 40 some odd) shot down by one plane, the Brewster Buffalo.
Actually the Brewster Buffalo was a better airplane than what the "experts" who criticized it claim. It was good enough that even the Japanese during WW2 re-used the ones they captured. What many people do not consider is HOW a weapon is used and only obsess over the specs. For example, the Japanese A6M Zero was superior in flight characteristics to all US fighters from 1941 to 1943, but the US fighter pilots were still able to shoot down Zeros. it is the tactics with which the weapon system is used that makes or breaks it.
F-18 is inferior aircraft in comparison with F-16 ..shorter range, much worse dynamic performance including max speed,, cruising speed, acceleration ,rate of climb, dogfight, and is much more expensive. It is importent when you buy thousends of them.
@@robertphillips93 So THAT'S what he was doing... Touch and go's off of a nice straight section of highway.. That explains why he never retracted his landing gear..
This is really surprising. Everything that I've seen and read illustrates how important the conditions are for a strip/tarmac that an f-18 uses. As incredible of an engineering feat the f-18 is, apparently its engines are incredibly fragile; thus the takeoff and landing surface must have near perfect conditions (smooth, free of debris, etc.)
Fragile? Smooth surfaces? Why isn't it falling apart on full afterburner or pulling 6g's? The punishment of being catapulted and arrested on a carrier? It's a war plane not a piper cub.
The sound of freedom!! About 1990, A GrandFather said this to his Granddaughter at an air show. She covered her ears as an F-18 took off. The grandfather said why do you cover your ears? The granddaughter responded, that noise. The grandfather responded, that’s not noise, that’s the sound of freedom!! God bless America!!
At the moment it is much more "God HELP America". It is in desperate trouble and has no one to call for help. The population is unable to comprehend the risks that they are under.
I am amazed the Finnish highways can stand up to a fighter jet take off. F-18s are pretty heavy and the jet blast would just peel the asphalt off the road if they tried that around here. Awesome video though. What a sight that would be.
Yeah , the bridges on the highway near our SAC Airforce base were specifically distanced so bombers could use the road as runway in an emergency attack scenario.
That’s actually why the highway system was made. It was originally invented by president Eisenhower so in the event of an invasion, aircraft could land on highways, or roads to re-fuel and rearm nearly anywhere.
Plenty of people cared. I got likes. Your country is an absolute shithole. I'm sorry to have to say it, but it is backwards, violent, poor, disease ridden, plus you sheltered Bin Laden, who was an absolute son of a female pig. Besides, Abdouchebag, if nobody cares, as you say, why did you bother to reply? Good luck with the heroin harvest this year.
@@VyarkX When I pull a trailer with my compact car on a rainy day, it looks similar in the rear view mirror. I am absolutely sure this not from that engine. :-D
Yes, the opening footage was definitely at a military airbase (not on the highway) just look at the surroundings, the painted markings on the ground, and the taxing path the F-18 is moving on ... as for the rest, it smacks of being fake to me and is something (if it is) that is not too difficult to do these days given the cleverness of computers as we all know from some of the movies produced now in the 21st Century.
I have alot of respect for the Finnish as I read many years ago Finland was the ONLY country to paid back the USA for money USA lent them /them incurred in WWII... IIRC. Regardless of details have alot of respect for them being "Men of their Word", of honor, etc.
Because they know the russians are going to bomb every known airstrip to bits the first day. So they build ordinaire roads everywhere around the country that also can handle airplanes. That way they can station airplanes all around the country making them much harder targets.
