SWISS AIR FORCE F/A-18C HORNET Fighter Squadron 17 at RAF Cosford Airshow
The F/A-18C Hornet is a twin-engined, supersonic multi-role combat jet that is designed to carry out air-to-air missions and attack ground targets (the F/A designation stands for fighter/attack). The aircraft, which entered service with the Swiss Air Force in 1997, has proved itself well suited to operations in Switzerland's mountainous regions and narrow valleys as well as from the relatively short runways of its military airfields.
It is currently flown by three Swiss squadrons, which operate out of Meiringen and Payerne. They use the F/A-18C - which has been given significant upgrades to its capabilities since coming into use with the air arm - for the air policing role as their primary function. In Swiss hands,

Awesome display and photography. The F18 has to be one of the best looking fighters made.

The F-18 is a very underrated plane . It is an excellent aircraft that is is very versatile in what it can do

Underrated indeed; over shadowed by the stealths, but still a versatile USN workhorse and operated by allies beautifully like the Swiss AF.

Excellent video, 0:45 the Swiss pilot drifts that Hornet C like it's a 5th gen fighter. Yes the F/A-18C is often forgotten for it's agility.
@LIKWID
@LIKWID 5 лет назад
I'm sure I heard a test pilot say the newer hornets aren't quite as agile as the older legacy Hornets. Can't remember if it was a youtube video or an interview but it's stuck in my head for a while!
@philj745
@philj745 5 лет назад
@@LIKWID ; Indeed the newer Super Hornets are much bigger so definitely not as agile, but no slouch either as you can see from other Ewyn R. videos. There's a reason why the Blue Angels chose the regular smaller Hornets as their jet of choice insane aerobatics.

I didn't realize the F-18's were software limited on their Angle of Attack capabilities. The announcer said they updated the software on these F-18c's to remove the AoA limitations. After watching this video....maybe limits on the AoA capabilities were a good thing. That pilot did some crazy awesome flying!

You will never ever see US pilots fly the Hornet in a way that the aircraft departs from controlled flight. It is very cool to see that it can be done and it looks cool, albeit you would never do this in a combat situation, but it's a neat airshow trick!! 6:00 - pilot induced flat spin and recovery.

Little known that F-18 actually has some of the best post-stall performance among non-thrust vectoring fighters. I dared to say that before the F-22, the Hornet was the most maneuverable mass-produced jet fighter in the US inventory. Upon learning that the F-35 have a similar kinematics to the F-18, it's not a low bar at all.

Interesting that the plane showed off its arrestor hook, but these don't operate from carriers (of course - I don't imagine the Swiss have much need of a navy). I wonder whether they keep the hook to enable them to operate from someone else's carrier although given Switzerland's legendary neutrality that sounds implausible..... Wouldn't it be better to remove the hook if it's not being used?
@harryflash4680
@harryflash4680 5 лет назад
I noticed that and thought it strange. Carrier landings take a lot of practise. They aren't the only air force to keep the hooks. Some suggestions why on here:- www.quora.com/Does-the-Australian-air-force-F-18-still-have-a-tail-hook-installed-If-they-are-still-carrier-capable-are-Australian-air-force-pilots-carrier-qualified-Why-would-the-RAAF-F-18-keep-the-tail-hook-if-their-pilots

Is just me, or does anyone else wonder why this plane lost out to the f16 for the Air Force contract? I’m sure politics played a role, but what an amazing machine. Great video.
@dogeness
@dogeness 5 лет назад
Actually the reasons were more practical. From Wikipedia: “On 13 January 1975, Secretary of the Air Force John L. McLucas announced the YF-16 as the winner of the ACF competition.[33] The chief reasons given by the Secretary were the YF-16's lower operating costs, greater range, and maneuver performance that was "significantly better" than that of the YF-17, especially at supersonic speeds. Another advantage of the YF-16 - unlike the YF-17 - was its use of the Pratt & Whitney F100 turbofan engine, the same powerplant used by the F-15; such commonality would lower the cost of engines for both programs.”
@dogeness
@dogeness 5 лет назад
Btw in case you don’t know the YF-17 was the prototype to the F/A-18
@ladiesman1ate7
@ladiesman1ate7 5 лет назад
