Can the New Russian Sukhoi T-50 (PAK FA) Challenge the American F-22 & the Newly developed multi-national F-35?.Now that China has its own 5th generation stealth fighter (Chengdu J-20),the Sukhoi T-50 has another challenge... Here's an interesting link : www.aviationwee... click the video "NCADE: Fighter-Launched ABM"
December 2007 test is thought by Raytheon researchers to be the only successful intercept of a ballistic missile by an air-to-air missile fired from a fighter. Two Ariz. Air National Guard F-16s fire two NCADE missiles (AMRAAM with an AIM-9X EO-IR seeker). (F-35 fires AIM-120 at 1:07-1:12)

After reading the comments regarding the video posted, I have come to conclusion that Americans remind me of Russians back in 30's-40's. Russians also were fanatically enthusiastic about their military technology. The elusions collapsed after just a few month of war. The Americans truly believed that they have the best staff. The argument is pointless here. As two fighters never met in a combat. However, it is very dangerous underestimate your opponents. I believe that most of comments were written by teens, who like to watch "Transformers".

You're right about the teens on these sites all boastful and proud, talking out of their asses. But in regards to the two nations never meeting in combat, you are mistaken. I won't go back as far as Korea, we all know that many Russian fighter pilots flew in that war with a ratio of about 6:1. So lets look at Vietnam where the ratio was more balanced, the USAF ratio was about 3:1 and the USN ratio was about 5:1. Although Russia still officially denies its participation in Vietnam over 3000 served. There was one occasion when a Soviet pilot that had been shot down was rifle butted to death by a VC thinking it was a US pilot. Needless to say he got in a lot of trouble. Now these figures did favor the US and allied side, they were still not good enough for western forces. With US training today they pit pilots against a ratio of at least 6 to 1. Now in saying all that is the west prepared to suffer even that kind of ratio? The Russians don't seem to have any problem with it and would still call it a victory. Now all up the US military has roughly 1500 fighters and Russia about 800 (fighters only). Now if the ratio is up to 1:1 and I don't believe that is the case, well I'll let the numbers speak for themselves. The numbers are even worse for Russia if we add Europe's numbers. If anyone is underestimating anyone, I think its the Russians that underestimates the US and Europe.

crazyt1ger08 Do better job of reading the next time. I said that two jets have never met in any combat. I did not mention anything about two nations. The ratio in Korea would change if you compare a number of wins between US and Russian pilots. Ratio is 1;3 with Russian advantage. The data about Vietnam war is still classified and Russian archive data has not been released yet, so I do not comment on this. Do not bring the political aspect to this.
@crazyt1ger08
@crazyt1ger08 10 лет назад
Hmm, you do know that they were in fighters? 1:3 ratio advantage Russia? Where on Earth did you get that information, RT (Russia Today)? I see another RT reporter quit today because of gross misreporting. Truth be damned, always tell the world Russia is the good guy, oops did they shoot down another airliner? Well there goes that ratio up for Russia again. Russia hasn't released data for the Russian participation in Vietnam? Mate they still deny even being there even tho veterans celebrate anniversaries and Vietnamese government officials go there and thank them. But you go on and believe whatever they tell you. Russia's standing in the world relies on fools in the west that hates the western system and have stars in their eyes for a Russian system which is based on lies. And all told, we have plenty of fools to offer them.
@alexcronin41
@alexcronin41 10 лет назад
crazyt1ger08 RT is information agency and does not cover history. I have no intention to continue any form of discussion with you as it seems you are not capable to exchange, but rather to expect that no matter what you said is to be taken as the only truth. Do not start me on your competence and you better look for a weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Russia did release as de facto they participation in Vietnam, but VVS did not in terms of numbers employed. Have you heard about presumption of innocence? I guess not. You can call Russia as a bad guy, but it seems so called good guys have committed much more atrocities for the past 10 years than a bad guy. So maybe is not bad to be a bad guy after all? Actually, if you compare Americans with Russians I would say Americans are much more gullible. Anyone who seek for truth would ask for evidence, but you already believed what cnn, fox news told you. I listened that too. had some laugh. Especially about intercepted conversation. So if you hate Russia-I do not give a damn, but stop waste my time with your incompetence.

The T50 specs outshines the rest. Also interesting to know that the F35 is actually based on the Russian YAK141. The USA bought the design from Russia.
@Dominikmj
@Dominikmj 10 лет назад
John Shackleton There is one big mistake in your comment; it should rather read like that: "the prospected T50 specs supposed to outshine the rest". The Indians tested the T-50 in January, and the outcome leaked, that the T-50 disappointed them in all major key points! Engines [yes it supposed to get new engines, however the development seems not completed yet], avionics [especially radar], supercruise capabilities, agility, pilot interface... you name it. Given, that the T-50 is definitely still minimum 2 to 3 years [if not more] away, the F-22 is the King of the Air. The F-35 is not the design of the Yak141. Only the concept/basics (!!!) of the swiveling nozzle + center fan was bought. But the Russians could never make the Yak 141 really safely work, as they'd need a lot of computer power, to make the system workable. Something what the Russians are definitely not strong at. And judging the F-35 at its specs is totally naive and silly. It is like comparing a 20 years old PC with the latest smartphone. The F-35 has tricks due to its computer & sensor suites, which cannot even be assessed. Like always, these systems cannot even show their advantages in maneuvers like red flag, as the limitations in such trainings are usually not showing the full advantages of an airplane. To directly answer it: Red Flag, Green Flag or any other military maneuvers are in existence, to give pilots a near reality confrontation - as the stats say, that pilots are more likely to be shot down in their first engagement, than any following battle. They are also done, to understand limitations, issues in combat [or supply chain] etc. Once more - these "engagements" are NOT viable to reasonably compare airframes!

F-35 based on YAK141 ahahahaha that old bag of rusty bolts what the actual fuck, and the T50 is a budget plane and its not even fully stealth it will be shit do your homework son
@Dominikmj
@Dominikmj 9 лет назад
Hjembrent Kent The F-35 is not based on the Yak 141. Only the thrust vectoring concept of the F-35B is based on this plane. The overall idea wasn't at all bad - however when the Yak-141 was built and tested, there weren't capable computer to assist the pilot while hovering. As we know from the Harrier, this can be a daring task! But nowadays with computers [and the F-35 has the most advanced of any plane], this isn't any more an issue. Yes, as one of the most advanced and most daring aviation projects ever it does have its challenges and set backs - but given the actual demands of the DoD, this is only natural. I am not a Russian fan boy nor am I convinced about the T-50... but your comment doesn't show any respect. This is the Russians first attempt to make a proper stealth plane, and it has stealth [maybe you should make your homework - there is nothing such as "fully stealth"] - only its RCS is bigger than American stealth planes [depending on how you count, the F-22 is already their 3rd or 4th generation stealth air frame].
@theblueguy2
@theblueguy2 10 лет назад
The F-22 is one hell of an aircraft, there is no question about it. However, if you want to compare the two aircraft in a realistic way, you must also factor in the cost. A brand new F-22 costs 138 million dollars, where a Sukhoi T-50 only puts you 50 million dollars down. So the more realistic question to ask is: "Can 3 of the new russian Sukhoi T-50 fighters challenge one american F-22?". Well, as a man with a notorious mustache once said, "Quantity has a quality all of it's own".
@mattslattery4107
@mattslattery4107 9 лет назад
f-35 Pilot can look through the plane and even to the rear and engage a enemy. Missiles got 360 degree engagement ability with helmet screen display if anyone even can get that close. Most others have half the engagement range if the f-35 is in full stealth mode F.e. F-35 can engage at x amount of miles when other can engage at one half of x.

how right you are, besides we dont even know alot about the F-22 either(it being the oldest of the 5th generation planes and the only one on active combat duty). I noticed how the performance specs on the F-22 has changed over the years on numerous websites. And up until today the Max speed is still highly classified.
@sssarsss
@sssarsss 10 лет назад
air-superiority is not dependent on the aircraft in the sky alone, there is a lot stuffed into the aircraft aside from engines, computer packages.. avionics, weapons, radar etc. but the biggest factor is the pilot. Take the Japanese navy carriers of early WWII, they had superior aircraft and pilots, but they lost key battles because Japanese aircraft-carriers did not have fire-control, whereas the US carriers did, when US carriers got hit, they had the chance to put out fires, but the Japanese carriers had no fire-systems, so they just burned and sank. it comes down to much more than the vehicle itself. And it is no secret that the Americans have already tested aircraft than can do Mach8, hell, they had Aurora program 30years ago, they are far more advanced than any other military. They are already working on generation6 stuff and beyond. They have stuff that will never be known about until war breaks out(secret weapon programs).
@Dominikmj
@Dominikmj 10 лет назад
I like the way you are thinking. And yes - one of the biggest factor is the pilot. But also the workload and the situational awareness of the pilot. And there American planes [and especially the F-35] will have a big advantage.

Dominik MJ the f35 is full of the defects and is not reliable
@Dominikmj
@Dominikmj 10 лет назад
Luciano Zucca This is incorrect. Yes the F-35 had multiple big issues - as well as ongoing small issues. But every new muster has issues. However different countries have different ways, how to deal with this information. The democratic nature of the US as well as the big opponents against this admittedly huge financial investment into the JSF program, is "magnifying" every single problem! E.g. in Germany more than 8 out of 10 Typhoons are grounded due to damages and failures, and even the Rafale had a huge software glitch, so the pilot had to restart the main systems (!!!) - but in these countries it is far less likely, that this will become an open discussed debate! And in Russia? The Su-30 MKI cannot start in a bulk- as the engine need cool air - hence a 6 minute runway cool down! [which is a significant weakness, as in an attack, they can't get the airframe fast enough into the air and they might be destroyed, when the airfield is bombarded] - this problem is unique and not seen by ANY NATO plane. This problem surfaced in Red Flag Las Vegas. The Russians basically gave the Indians the instructions just to start on a 6 minute cooled down air strip! Other nations would claim, that this is a major flaw [the engines could catch fire, if they wouldn't grant the cool down] - the Russians just say, that this "is normal". We are talking about a plane, which was evolving for 30+ years! The F-35 is one of the most complex systems, the world ever seen. It is very rigorously tested and is criticized comparable quite harshly. It will be reliable and will let its defects behind [even this year, there were much fewer issues, than previous years]!

actually it was canceled because there was no point putting it into mass production in 2005 when no other nations even had published concepts for a 5th gen fighter. So instead they built a suitable amount (185) and started working on 6th Gen concepts, a couple of unofficial concepts have already been published, unofficially of course.

The problem is that everyone is trying to compare the American plane to the Russian plane. They are fundamentally different in their approach to combat. Do I think the Suky could out maneuver the F-22 in close quarter combat? Maybe. But the F-22 and F-35 are not supposed to slug it out. They are more sophisticated and will destroy their adversaries with early detection and long range weapons. That is the plan.

I was also told that about the F-35 as well awhile back when the issue of dogfighting came up due to the F-35s inferior aerodynamics to the Sukhoi.But from what I was told,The f-35 can knock the sukhoi out of the sky before the sukhoi knows its even there,so there would be no need for close range aerial combat.

The F-22 is being upgraded for better engine, performance, maneuver etc. Also recent testing of the F-22 prove that it is not a waste especially at BVR where Euro Typoon figther pilot mentioned "We can't get a lock-off at BVR and can't detect the F-22 but at close range dogfighting we are some-what equal" Now imagine the F-22 with new upgrades!!!

Pretty funny argument. The US FA-82 Zeus is by far the top dog fighter ever created and flown. Only been deployed 2 times since it was put into service. Its not used much because there is no great need to attack waves of other fighters or bombers as its primary roll. The 2 times it was used was for deep penetration RC of foreign air space and they never knew it was there.

Russia couldn't even get a friggen jet engine to power a bomber and still give it intercontinental range decades after the B-52 took to the skies. A pretty serious concern with the MiG-29 was that its engines constantly left a very visible trail of brownish exhaust that would make it much easier to see. They're obviously better now, but they plainly have a historical weakness when it comes to their skill in producing jet engines. It's totally nuts to say they're #1.

Hardly, if anything the F-35 is, in the next two decades going to be the only viable game in town. Keep in mind that as F-35 production ramps up, production for teen series fighters dwindles. This means increased costs for legacy aircraft, both to procure and maintain. And this does not even begin to scratch the game changer that is sensor fusion, the first truly widespread VLO platform, and the only export fighter able to survive in an s-300/s-400 airspace.

SOVIET weapons were competitive with American weapons. But people forget an important point: the Soviets were working with similar R&D budgets to their American counterparts. Today, the story is completely different. Russia has a defense budget that is roughly 1/10th that of the USA. Sukhoi, Mikoyan etc. have talented, experienced engineers, but they are handicapped by a huge disparity in funding compared to their Western counterparts. Money matters and the US defense companies have more of it.

I don't think the f-35 is as bad as everyone seems to believe. Sure, The F-35 won't have the same top speed as earlier 4th gen designs, and most certainly not 3rd gen(whom were even faster than 4th gen). But then again, those speeds you see there are irrelevant in practice. "How so?" you may ask, well it has to do with problem previous designs struggled with, extra drag due to externally mounted weapons and fuel tanks. Take the F-16(F-35s spiritual precursor). It is said to have a top speed of about 2 machs. That's better than the stated 1.6 machs of the F-35. However Those 2 machs represents early versions of the F-16 when not carrying any weapons or extra fuel tanks. The top and marching speeds of that aircraft were much much lower in combat. A very good example of this is the F-22s precursor, the F-15. It was F-16s bigger brother, superior characteristics in all ways except price. But even that aircraft never actually went into combat flying faster than 1.3(!) machs. It's top speed was said to be 2.5 machs. This problem, is known as drag, which is a word designed to describe the effects of air resistance on any object moving trough the atmosphere. It is the reason aircraft tend to be very sharp and slender, you want to minimize the effect of drag as much as possible. In previous designs, weapons were mounted externally. Aside from making the aircraft heavier, they would also alter the aerodynamic profile of the aircraft, it would increase drag due to the increased cross-section. This had a dramatic effect on the speeds of the aircraft. Same thing holds true for the huge fuel tanks the aircraft often carried when they needed to travel large distances. With the F-22 and later F-35, designers wanted to solve that problem, creating an aircraft that could carry weapons and indeed travel fast and far without carrying anything extra externally, thus avoiding extra drag. One wanted to create a more efficient military aircraft. In the F-22, this effectively meant creating a very large aircraft, one that could carry extra large reserves of fuel and weapons entirely inside the airframe. Downside there is that you can't really have very many of them(theoretically) on an aircraft carrier. Also means you got a very expensive design. The F-35 is smaller than the F-22. Which is probably the main reason the US wanted an entirely new aircraft design rather than simply modernizing the F-22. Downside ofcourse is that you need to make the aircraft bulkier to compensate, you still need the extra room for your weapon bays. There also were a bunch of kinks with the F-22, such as the production of parts all over the country that didn't necessarily fit when it was to be assembled. All this nonsense resulted in increased costs and problems. The russian and chinese 5th gen designs are very similar to the F-22s design, large and slender, expensive to create and maintain, impractical on aircraft carriers. It is the reason the PAK-FA for instance won't completely replace older 4.5 gens such as the su-35, which btw is a brand new design. It wouldn't surprise me if those nations decide to create smaller fifth gen fighters on their own down the line. When all this is said. Keep in mind all the statistics you see may down right be lies. It may be the americans or russians overstate or understate the capabilities of their respective technologies. Even if we assume they aren't lying, the data you stumble upon around the web often don't state the configuration the various aircraft are in, for instance thrust to weight ratios may be when one of the aircrafts is carrying more fuel, relative to it's total mass, than the craft it is being compared to, thus the data aren't directly comparable. Obviously, if you compare the T/W ratios of a empty F-35 with an empty Typhoon, things look very different compared to the crafts in question were fully tanked. It gets even worse if you compare a tanked F-35 with an untanked typhoon or vice versa.

I'd chose maneuverability over stealth. Also, I'd like to point out that, while the F-22 is more stealthy, it uses weapons and computers from when it was designed; around 1997. The Pak Fa has state-of-the-art weapons that are designed purposely to identify and destroy stealth aircraft.

The answer to the question to the video is NO. Russians and China are finding out that it's very expensive to make a stealth jet. This Russian attempt will pose no threat in the near future. Will take them many more years to field it and the numbers will be too few to pose any threat still. Not to mention they are always behind the power curve. Read that the RCS is about the same as F18 super hornet... not a stealth aircraft. But it looks damn good though.

it is hilarious how the russian fanboys are bragging about a weapon system which is (equally) delayed for several years... and its prototype is given already underwhelming reviews in all major categories. Yeah both programs, the ATF and JSF were prohibitory expensive - but they are deployed and ready for action. A supposedly proven airframe as the Su-30MKI isn't even able to start in a squadron, because the engines need cooler temperatures and threaten to burst... And the closest military partners of Russia [India] just selected the Rafale against a Mig-35 [and the Indians were pissed, that the F-35 was not offered to them]! You also don't need to have too high hopes for the Chengdu J20. The Chinese at this point have pretty much only Russian fighters and less capable Chinese copies of them. Even if they spied and reverse engineered, they seem to be years back, when it comes to key technologies for 5th gen fighter. But hey - at least both the T-50 and the J20 are pretty, right?
@srikanta90
@srikanta90 10 лет назад
you are pretty much right about everything but Mig-35 was not selected because Russians always go for cost over run plus rafale is better than Mig-35 and operating system are very similar to Mirage. Huge lobbying from France is also a reason for selecting rafale over typhoon and cost of typhoon is too high. And we are not pissed off for not getting offer for F-35 as it is expensive and there is no chance of transfer of tech. we are already going to get upgraded sukhoi's and Mig-29, so there is no chance of Mig-35, which is almost similar to Mig 29 SMT. Plus we always have to move to Israel for Avionics suite.
@Dominikmj
@Dominikmj 10 лет назад
Srikant Prakash Well - all what I know is, that the Mig-35 [which is a Mig-29 derivate] was offered in the medium combat fighter competition. Well it didn't made it. Yes - the Rafale was selected due to infrastructure and price. I have seen several commentaries, that the Indians wanted to have a shot of the F-35 and that many are not even that happy about the technology transfer. It is very difficult as well as expensive, to built own planes. In politics for sure it sounds great [creating jobs in the technology sector] - but these are also semantics.

Dominik MJ LOL !!! where did u get this from ''Indians were pissed, that the F-35 was not offered to them''..India was never looking for F-35 JSF...after all India is not a rich country like the US & JSF partners..we always look for ''value for money'' options...forget offering JSF to any other country, for the time being US must try to keep JSF partners in the loop who r having second thoughts for this expensive junk piece..
@Dominikmj
@Dominikmj 10 лет назад
RSA Well - you might not have a lot of foresight. The F-35 might just surprise a lot of people. I have seen footage, where Indian politicians discussed about the use of the F-35. And your assessment about rich or not rich is totally wrong. India selected the Rafale as medium combat platform [against the Mig-35 and the Gripen - both significantly cheaper]. And India also invested 6 Billion dollars into the PMF [PAK FA] project... at least until now [and this doesn't include their prospected purchases]. Other countries, which have tight monetary limits also selected the F-35, as they were quite satisfied with its performance - e.g. Israel [which is quite an attestation to its potential - Israel is notoriously picky about weapon systems, which they buy]. You should take the public opinion about the F-35 with a grain of salt - the problem is, that there is a lot of opposition against this program in the US. And there are people who take the opportunity to get "some air time" like Pierre Sprey, which are obviously not as knowledgeable as they say. Compared to this, e.g. Russia is quite tightlipped - and usually don't allow any criticism. This all leads to a distortion of the status quo, if you compare projects.
@gathwalajat3311
@gathwalajat3311 10 лет назад
Dominik MJ Rafale was selected against mig 35, f-16, f-18 & gripen, mainly bcoz of TOT (tranfer of tech)..it was never cheaper but bcoz of TOT, it worth it...US is an elephant with a rat size brain, recently they lost deal on javellin ATM's with india on TOT issues against the israeli ATM's..US doesn't enjoy the goodwill among indians as much as russia does..So 6 billion is justified for PAK FA, compared to the JSF project of over a trillion dollar in total and still remains wid question marks..but anyways, let us wait for actual comparison b/w the two...and yes my assessment is correct, we hav only limited options bcoz of a small budget..we can't afford costly experiments, country like US can even scrap the project tomorrow and still move on, sustaining all the losses...Israel doesn't hav any option other than US, but we does...except China (our arch foe), we buy from everyone and this creates a competition among countries, which forces them to offer a better deal than the other..thats how we get what we desperately needs ''the TOT''

This video does a really bad job of "selling" the T-50. It shows the T-50 doing some basic flight testing, virtually no hard maneuvering let alone thrust vector maneuvers - the F-22, on the other hand, is shown pulling gees, and launching missiles from its internal bays while maneuvering (which is NOT an easy technical feat). Based on the clips chosen for this video you would have to conclude that the F-22 was the superior aircraft without question. T-50 sure looks cool, though.

Like it or hate it, the Raptor is the only Generation 5 Air Dominance fighter in operation. Not only have all problems been resolved wih this fighter but several new upgrades will be made in the near future. The Raptor was designed to defeat multible enemies at long range. Any enemy plane that comes within 20 miles of a Raptor(well beyond a pilot's field of view) risks being targeted and shot down This is Generation 5 technology at it's best.

It's a prototype folks. All those performance numbers will changewhen the production version is ready. For one the aircraft will get heavier when final design alterations are made which will bring the thrust-to-weight ratio downward. The super precise saw-tooth paneling for the entire aircraft will only serve to increase the price as well. The Russians still have a long way to go and they know it.

Although the F 22 raptor and F35 lighting look similar, the F35 is 10 years ahead in terms of Avionics, it is a common fact around 80% of an aircraft budget goes on avionic systems. As all three aircraft stand at the moment, it would say the F35 would come out on top.

Next up, during the first half of the Korean War, the Russian made (but not russian piloted) MiG-15 Aircraft was superior to any other plane (until the US caught up and developed the even better F-86 Sabre). Finally, During the Vietnam War, the first iterations of the American made M16 and M60 were famously unreliable and constantly jammed, as opposed to the universally acclaimed AK-47, which many consider to be the finest assault rifle even made, and it was Russian made.

@DailyStaley Don't forget that Russia also took a "cheaper is better" approach during the cold war with their MiGs and T-72's, the general idea being if I have 100 and you have 1, chances are one of my 100 will take out your 1. We all saw the result of this mindset during the first gulf war when the Iraqi made T-72's were roundly beat by superior U.S. M1 Abrams. a good rule of thumb is that if somebody takes the cheaper is better approach to warfare, they are wrong.

@mikewilburn1 That's a big call. I'd say there's more in the operator than the aircraft when it comes to differences. Its role is air supremacy - where stealth is just one new component. The real test will come in close range combat < 2 nautical miles. Here agility and thrust to weight would be the advantages I'd want. Looks capable of some pretty high AOA maneuvers judging by the range of deflection on the leading edges ahead of the intakes.

The F22 crash was not a technology failure, but lack vector thrust experience on the pilot, I'm sure they have a new skin material out that's rainproof by now, there's always early glitches, Russia has them too trust me.
