Former F-35 crew here, the F-35 is a STOVL aircraft, or Short Take Off Vertical Landing. Tech data says vertical take off would cause the lift fan to blow debris down the intake and potentially FOD out the engine.

Also, when the F-35B dose a vertical take off, it's using lots of fuel, and its weapons load has to be severely reduced, for that style of take off, as well.

Sorry for the two small bugs. In the previous news from China, the designers said that they had considered installing the WS-15 engine from the beginning of the design. The AL31F engine installed is due to the difficulties in developing the WS-15(it's still in research, PLAAF is using WS-10C to replace AL31F now.). The J-20 is a complete weapon only after the WS-15 engine is loaded. The 2D thrust engine was also not considered in the design of the J-20 because the designers believed that the aerodynamic shape was sufficient to meet the design goals of the J-20.

The J-20 does have the helmet mounted display and the sensor fusion technology with the distributed aperture system, similar to that of the F-35, giving the pilot much better situational awareness than the F-22. These combined with the high off-boresight (90 deg) and lock-on after launch capabilities of the PL-10, which is almost a generation better than the AIM-9X, are deadly in a within visual range fight. The canards make the aircraft statically unstable, without a FBW system, in return making it extremely maneuverable, especially considering the J-20 has a lower wing loading than the F-22. The PL-15 is another force multiplier compared to the AIM-120D. The real weak point of the early J-20 is the lack of a powerful and thrust vectoring engine, which is resolved in the J-20B. But in any case, even the baseline J-20 has much better thrust to weight ratio than the F-35, which the J-20 most likely will meet in the west pacific.

At the meantime, perhaps you could do review on Russian Su-30M2, Su-35, Su-34M ground attack capability with your knowledge & experience on F-15E LANTIRN or newer FLIR targeting pod in search and destroy with precision guided munitions. Add your finding on Russian Air Force Su-30, Su-25 and Russian Navy older Su-34 air to ground sorties over Ukraine where numbers of them shot down. Why are they carrying only unguided rockets and bombs? Is it because the Russians don't have money to buy precision guided munitions or most of their air to ground missiles are active radar guided that they can't distinguish enemy tanks, vehicles from civilians? Why there's no fighters to take out Ukrainian drones? Would love to see your detailed explanation on Russian aircraft air to ground capability next.

@zhe8586
@zhe8586 6 месяцев назад
@@klardfarkus3891 one measure of a fighter jet's maneuverability is its wing loading which is aircraft weight divided by wing (or lifting surface) area. The lower the wing loading, the more G capability the jet has. Based on Wiki data, J-20 has lower wing loading than F-22 and many other capable fighter jets. Similar to its older and smaller brother, the J-10, as well as many "Euro-canards", the J-20 has the canard-delta-wing configuration. This configuration is statically unstable in the longitudinal axis, but when controlled by a fly-by-wire (augmented) flight control system, it's highly maneuverable. As a result, the J-20 is very agile, has excellent performance in the supersonic/trans-sonic flight region and has great low-speed/post-stall handling qualities. The initial batch J-20 has rather "inadequate" powerplants. But the J-20B (has supposedly entered service) is equipped with the powerful and thrust-vectoring WS-15 which is 13% more powerful (afterburner) than F-22's F119 engine. Given that the J-20 is slightly lighter than the F-22, it has better thrust-to-weight ratio than the F-22. These are all on Wiki. Similar to the F-35, the J-20 is equipped with helmet mounted display, distributed aperture system and sensor fusion technology which give the pilot great situational awareness. The PL-10 is by far one of the best short range missiles and almost a generation better than the AIM-9X: 90 degrees high off-boresight capability, lock-on after launch, and coupled with the helmet display, the pilot can perform "look & shoot" from a disadvantaged position. The PL-15 is an AESA guided and dual-pulse motored high performance long range missile that the USAF yet to have (maybe AIM-260?). All of the above, are strong indications that the J-20 is definitely designed as an air superiority fighter, that has technologies a few decades newer than the F-22 and "physically" a lot more performing than the compromised (due to commonality requirements for A, B and C variants) F-35. There is a lot of public info out there.
@zhe8586

You have to factor in kinematics and payload. The F35 is somewhat underpowered because its a single engine fighter while the J20 despite having interim engines that aren't at the full potential has a better thrust to weight. This is going to make a big difference in BVR engagements when it comes outrunning and outclimbing missiles, and critical in within visual range engagements for obvious reasons. The J20 has one secret up its sleeve in that it does have a better long range missile with what can be carried on the F35, although against stealth targets all that would mean would be a higher hit potential at medium ranges due to better missile kinematics.

Maybe it is the overall shape of the J-20 fooling my eyes, but it appears to be very long and narrow. It just doesn't look like it would have very good pitch authority....regardless of the canards. I know that with new engines in development, it should gain thrust vectoring capability....but it doesn't seem to be an incredibly agile airframe. The thing is nearly 70 feet long. I think that it's main purpose is not as a fighter, but as an interceptor. I believe the Chinese want to use the aircraft to target tankers, AWACS, JStars, etc...and to reduce the effectiveness of our power projection in that manner. That is also likely why it is stealthy in the front aspect only...so it won't be as easily detectable when hunting the aforementioned assets. They better pray that there are no F-22s nearby providing cover for them, though.
@johnosbourn4312
@johnosbourn4312 2 года назад
Also, since it has Canards, and ventral fins, it can't be a Stealth Fighter, because those features actually increase the plane's radar cross section, making it appear larger on radar screens, than both the F-22, and the F-35. For a warplane to a true stealth, it would have to an airframe shaped to reduce the radar reflectivity, along with special paint, and optional external hardpoints under the wings, as well. Plus, it can't be designed with canards, and ventral fins, both of which act as big radar reflectors, to make it easier to see on radar screens. One more thing, both China, and Russia haven't developed special exhaust nozzles to help with the stealthiness, and reduce the infrared signature ofcthei so called "5th Gen" fighters.
@thunderpriest7418
@thunderpriest7418 2 года назад
@@johnosbourn4312 I don't believe that having canards or ventral fins compromises the stealthiness of the airframe, so long as they are canted at angles to help reflect radar energy away from the receiver. That being said, it is definitely less stealthy than either of the American 5th gen aircraft.
@johnosbourn4312
@johnosbourn4312 2 года назад
@@thunderpriest7418 With the J-20 having canards, and ventral fins, the aircraft is not a true stealth aircraft like the F-22, and those features actually enhance the jet's radar cross section, plus, the asbence of stealthy exhaust nozzles will hamper the fighter's infrared signature as well. Sum it all up, and it's clear that the J-20 is not a stealth fighter, inspite China's claims that it is. Also, based on my knowledge of radar cross sections gained from reading about stealth aircraft, and efforts to reduce their radar cross sections, I can positively tell you that a fighter using canards, and fitted with ventral fins, but shaped like a stealth aircraft, will not be a stealth aircraft, because the radar beams will see those features, and present a large picture on the radar screen. To create a true stealth aircraft, you have to eliminate the features that would increase it's vulnerability to radars, and radar guided weapons, plus, you have to develop special engine exhaust nozzles to reduce the infrared, or heat signature, so infrared guided missiles would have difficulty in trying to lock on.

Concerning length... 70 feet is a bit long but doesn't necessarily mean it can't be agile... It wont be super nimble but just for perspective a F15 is 63'9"... Only 6 feet shorter

@@jamesrose699 Yeah, I get that. It just LOOKS like it is not very nimble. I watched an airshow clip of the J20, and it is not bad...I would put it's turn rate on par with the F-35. It is certainly no F-22...and I noticed that it uses leading edge slats. That is going to hurt it's RCS, too.

Sir, I beg to differ with you WRT the J20 vs. the F-35. The J20's wings are bigger, which means lower wing loading. Lower wing loading gives the J20 more lift, agility, and maneuverability. Hence, in a WVR dogfight, I'd put my money on the J20. Pierre Sprey, of the Fighter Pilot Mafia responsible for the F-16, said that high wing loading would doom the F-35. He said it was a turkey. To me, it's reminiscent of the F-111 program, where the brass try to make the aircraft do everything, while doing nothing particularly well.

I wonder why china went for a delta wing style instead of the conventional style plane. I heard that conventional jets are preferred in larger countries such as the usa and Russia because they are more fuel efficient and smaller countries that are packed together like Europe has delta wing style because they don't need to travel as far to fight
@anguswaterhouse9255
@anguswaterhouse9255 Год назад
They didn’t chose delta wings, they were after as much advanced fighter tech as they could get in the early 2000’s so along with stealing f-35 tech they purchased the blueprints and technical data for the mig 1.44 which was used as a base. If you look at the 1.44 from the top you can see clear as day that the j-20 is based on it. My guess is that to save money they just copied what they bought off Russia, and then added f-35 tech. So probably not as good as the f-35 and su-57 given it uses the fighter the su-57 beat as a base.

I'm not sure your contention that the canards makes J-20 stall nose up is correct. With fixed-canard aircraft, like the Rutan-style general aviation planes, the plane is designed so that the canard stalls first. That greatly reduces the likelihood of a snap stall, because the wing never gets a chance to stall. The nose will drop gently before that can happen. There are other low-speed dangers one can get themselves into. But, it's very difficult to actually stall the main wing. Since the main wing is always flying, the Rutan-style is inherently a very safe aircraft. With an articulated canard, like the J-20, the canards can be rotated to produce essentially zero lift at the front of the aircraft. So, it really can't inherently stall nose up, because the control software will almost certainly be written to prevent nose up stalls. If the software does allow the pilot to stall the aircraft, it will likely stall both surfaces at the same time. Also, if the plane does somehow get into a flat spin situation, rotating those canards will dump all of the lift at the front and change the balance of the lift much further back, so that the nose drops. That should allow it to recover from a flat spin, assuming there's enough altitude. The helmet-mounted-display does give the F-35 a big advantage in situational awareness. And, off-boresite engagement opportunities. But, if both planes enter the merge with energy-burning maneuvers, from that point, it's the plane with better thrust-to-weight that has the maneuvering advantage, right? At least, when neither plane has thrust vectoring, which is currently the case with both of these aircraft. The F-35 _probably_ still has the advantage because of the off-boresite shot opportunities. But, if the J-20 does have an acceleration advantage (I haven't looked it up) along with the nose authority of the canards, then a good pilot in that plane might be able to stay out of F-35's weapon envelopes, while also being able to line up his own shot. I'm making some assumptions, but, I don't think it's a slam dunk for the F-35. I did enjoy the video. I hope you don't mind my nitpicking 🙂
@PhycoKrusk
@PhycoKrusk Год назад
Keeping it simple, if they merge and turn towards each other (one-circle flow), the aircraft that can turn faster will win (this is usually the slower aircraft). If they merge and turn away from each other (two-circle flow), the aircraft that can get through its turn faster (returning to when the merge took place) will win (usually the aircraft with the higher thrust-to-weight ratio). Thrust vectoring throws a wrench into the one-circle flow because it is disruptive to turn radii. Where thrust vectoring is a factor, the winner of a one-circle fight will be the aircraft that has greater nose authority: The one that can whip its nose around fastest without stalling. From what I can learn, neither aircraft will have combat effective thrust vectoring, and the J-20 is expected to have a higher T:W ratio and greater speed. However, there are important things to consider: 1) China had not seriously innovated anything except copyright infringement for at least 500 years. Their most advanced technology today is acquired by copying and reverse engineering from other countries, and they usually do this poorly. I do not anticipate that the J-20 will meet its expectations. 2) If these aircraft find themselves in a dogfight with each other, it means that _everything about their respective missions has gone completely and horrifically wrong._
@MightyDrakeC
@MightyDrakeC Год назад
@@PhycoKrusk Or, really frustrating rules of engagement. I understand what you're saying about a simple fight. But, the pilot with the disadvantage in a simple fight is not going to let it stay simple. Once you start incorporating the vertical, it's about energy management more than just best turn rate. When you've reached that point, the plane with the better thrust to weight tends to have more options. Right? I agree, thrust vectoring and off boresight make modern aircraft far more lethal in a close in dogfight. It's hard for a fight to last long before one of the planes ends up within the weapons envelope of the other.
@PhycoKrusk
@PhycoKrusk Год назад
@@MightyDrakeC I'll be honest, I hadn't even considered off-boresight capability when I left my response. T:W between the 2 is not _that_ different; the J-20 does have the advantage there, but it's looking like it would only a few percent difference, quite unlike between the MiG-21 and the F-4 where it was a difference of 10% or more. But if the F-35 can fire from 90 degrees off boresight, then even if the J-20 _can_ force a two-circle fight, that's going to seriously limit its advantages there.

Ryan, do you play DCS? It would be cool to see more former fighter pilots get into this combat simulator. Ward Carroll has his normal RU-vid channel but will also launch a RU-vid and twitch channel committed to DCS. DCS from what I understand was officially used as a simulator platform to train A-10 pilots. Ward, a former F-14 RIO, I believe wants to form a fighter wing of retired guys F14, F18 guys which I am guessing will probably quickly become the bjggest DCS based RU-vid/Twitch channel out there. You asked awhile back how might the USAF match the Navy's ability to effectively recruit. Seems to me DCS makes for one hell of a platform, no? And Navy may already have a headstart.. to think in terms of making a 'Top Gun' like movie is fighting yesterday's battle. Think in terms of the times... the tools available to you now and how to use those tools to reach tomorrows fighter pilots. I would implor you to think of starting an Air Force fighter wing of retired guys on DCS. I think this could be an initiative that if sold properly by you, might command budget from USAF brass. This would be awesome. I'm a consultant, by the way... albeit unemployed. But I know a winner when I see one. ...See the win! All.my best, MMM
