China and the USA continue to butt heads over Taiwan. We'll take a look at how the US Air Force matches up with the Chinese air force (PLAAF). SU-35, J-20, J-31, J-10, J-11 are just some of the jets we'll look at. Are we headed for WW3? The Chinese Air Force has come a long way in recent years and poses a serious challenge to the United States.

There was a saying in the PLAAF: Instructor: "Why do you dogfight?" Student: "Because I have supermaneuvrability (in my Flanker?)?" Instructor: "No, because you are an idiot" This pretty much sums up that China doesn't put much money into dogfighting, rather prefers to put 2 close range missiles (think PL8, PL10, very modern heatseekers) on the jet and call it a day. They much more prefer the integrated system of satellites, AWACS aircraft (think KJ500, 2000), land and naval based radars, and long range drones for detecting an enemy and shooting at it from far away (using PL12 and PL15 missiles that at least from range is equal or superior to western missiles). This philosophy might also be why China loves delta wings, because they work very well at supersonic speeds and that's what you need for a plane to shoot a missile as far as it can by giving good initial energy. As for which side fares in a real modern war, I'd put my money on the PLAAF from theoretical capabilities. After all, China's military modernization is based on lessons from 1991, so they are fundamentally meant to face off the world's best using the latest military weapons and tactics (which includes BVR). Also, idk if this would sway your opinion, but the bonus of canards is that it generates lift upwards and not downwards as a conventional tailplane would. This not only eases airframe damage, but also reduces drag over the main wings as they no longer need to compensate the downforce on the rear but are actually assisted by a lift force in the front.

I know a P-8/P-3 pilot who sees adversary aircraft weekly if not daily now in the Bering sea and surrounding areas. The Russians come up to play, but the Chinese get run off by the F-22's routinely.

15:00 there was a Chinese article on that written by the J-35 designer. Apparently the front canopy opening has to do with their switch to a humped back design. The bulge behind the canopy has to do with boundary layer and reducing drag at high subsonic/low to mid super sonic speeds. The front pivoting canopy just conveniently takes up less space of the humped back and frees up space to put something meaningful inside. Oh, just to add for J-20, there had been photo of J-20 with retractable aerial refueling prob sticking out of its nose starboard side. And videos of newest J-20 cockpit videos show pilot wearing helmet mounted display. You see holes and protrusions covering the side and back of the helmet as the pilot turned his head to scan around.

Your welcome and I definitely will, btw, I'm good, been an aviation fan since my father introduced me at the age of 4yo, wanted to be a fighter pilot but life saw me as a Deputy Sheriff lol, either way, I still stay true to my love for military aircraft especially being from Fayetteville NC, and Pope AFB was where this love began. Of course now it's all Army but I have fond memories of the airshow he introduced me too, he passed away a little under two years ago from covid but he also loved aviation as well. The Thunderbirds was all he spoke of in the 80s and when I saw them fly I understood why lol,, so to see your content as I am an enthusiast provides me with that connection, I thank you as well..

@johnosbourn4312
@johnosbourn4312 Год назад
I can answer that: The team's jets would dragged across the Pacific by KC-135s, or KC-10s, but, as far as the external tanks, only the two seaters have the belly tank fitted, and the single seaters of the team do not carry the tanks, because it's easier for the maintenance personnel to get the show birds ready for their show, by not carrying external tanks.

Sir you left out the this peace of information on both J-10C & J-20 have HMD'S and Aim-9X equivliant missiles. its called the PL-10. You also left out the J-10C's ability to carry the PL-15 that has more range than the Amraam. I don't know if the F-22 has an HMD like th F-35 but if it doesn't the J-20 is going to have that advantage over the F-22 WVR. I also forgot to mention that the J-11A isn't modern like the J-11B, the J-11B virant would have been more comparable to the F-15C since it carries PL-12's (Aim-120 eqivilant).

Wait, you do know that China does have HMDs right?, at least for the J20s so it would also be on J35s. We've seen them on J10Cs as well , so there are indications that those may carry over some of their advanced flankers. Also the PL10 is an equivalent of that AIM-X and can do off-bore lock and shooting so they have had at least HMS.

Taiwan is an incredibly mountainous country with incredible technology. People seem to forget that they have as much right to claim mainland China as a part of their country as the CCP has to claim Taiwan as theirs. Any potential blockaders of Taiwan would face missile barrages of the blockading forces that would cause massive damage and lots of sunk tonnage. The island is like the Switzerland of the west pacific. The juice ain’t worth the squeeze of trying to take it.
@rooooooby
@rooooooby Год назад
@@jdenmark1287 I would argue more claim, since the KMT did once rule the mainland, however CPC never ruled Taiwan. But if the PRC wanted to take Taiwan by force, all they have to do is overwhelm Taiwan with rocket artillery for a few days to break morale before landing any forces on the island.

@jeffreyfarlow9862 Год назад
That’s the real question since it will be a battle of navies. The deciding factor will be if the plaan get the catapult system on their carriers to launch fully armed combat aircraft like the United States. Ski ramp carrier decks reduce the effectiveness of the Chinese carrier aircraft because you can’t launch fully loaded, they have to save weight to get speed and lift.

That would be interesting too. After all since the west bases a LOT of its airplanes on BVR and extended range combat its very important to analyse the weapons on top of the framework. After all we have seen Russia with very capable air-frames struggling to actually put them to use due to lacking weapons and resorting to the use of dumb bombs and rockets. The CCP clearly did their homework better than Russia did, so it would be interesting to see the two being put against each other armament wise

I think the J-16 (Su-30 derivative) is what they are mostly building these days in the flanker department. One of the main problems The U.S side faces in war simulations against China is that any air base close enough to be useful would also be close enough for their gigantic inventory of Ballistic and cruise missiles.

@Gabriel_McMillan
@Gabriel_McMillan Год назад
It's hard to hit a submarine with a ballistic missile... I imagine what would happen would be, ideally, our ships would remain as much out of range of those missiles as possible, so while they could attack our bases in Japan and Taiwan, they could not attack our ships, but we would be able to attack their ships from the air, and their aircraft from the air, so, over time, we would win the air and naval war, at perhaps much less cost than if we had sought to start engaging the Chinese harbors from carriers immediately. But what does this mean for US F-16s already in Japan? I think it means they have to fight their way out, then land somewhere else, until time has taken its toll on the Chinese Navy and Air Force, after which, we would focus more on targets ashore, but not before. Recent wargames indicated we could lose up to 900 US combat aircraft, but I sincerely believe those results could be greatly improved by using our available resources more cautiously, at least initially, citing the hazards you mentioned. When the machine gun was invented, that was the end of the orderly, 3 ranks deep, line formation infantry assault, because such a tactic became suicidal, due to the new capability the machine gun offered. But it did not mean that machine guns were invulnerable, or that having one ensured victory. If China cannot ferry supplies back and forth to Taiwan, it loses, sooner or later. That's all we really have to achieve. Ideally, it would also be hard for them to drop paratroopers.
@johnsilver9338
@johnsilver9338 Год назад
J-16 and any other EW aircraft will not be a problem when AIM-260 JATM comes out. Beside its active radar homing, it may also have infrared homing and/or anti-radiation capability similar to Raytheon's Peregrine missile that may replace the AIM-9X in the future. F-16 is getting an upgraded EW suite if I'm not wrong, so it could use it's passive radar to find J-16 and use JATM. Also same can be said for Chinese airfields that could be destroyed with Tomahawks or JASSM. But the advantage will go to whoever strikes first and who has more missiles and interceptors.

Well, no doubt this guy plays for team USA for sure lol. I respect his opinion because he's a fighter pilot, but I feel he doesn't take some things into consideration. China's weapons, be it ships, planes or tanks are much newer than the u,s's. This is because china only became rich in the last 20 years, whereas the USA been a world power for the last century. That's why you see chinese ships all nice and new, and usa's some ships are full of rust, Google the pics. Technology is a one way arrow, it always gets better with time. No one's saying we should ditch our iPhones and go back to the rotory phone of 30 years ago. No one's saying we should ditch out 65" 4k tv's and go back to the 70 's black and white tv's, at least I hope not. So in this regard, china's war machines are generally better than the U.S, because they're newer. The F35 is the only new plane the u.s has in these comparisons. Even the F22 is over 30 years old. I also don't agree that the J10 and J20 look like an F16 and F22. For a pilot, I'm surprised he made that statement. They don't look anything alike to me.

Bear in midn though that J-31 is the demonstrator. I doubt whenever they put that thing into service that the engine and canopy will remain the same as that in the video. And yeah, that J-31 was probably built on the R&D files from that hack into the F-35 program in 2009. I don't doubt the capability of these jets, but I do on the training/cadre/maintainance/experiences of the personnel. All those add up at the end of the stick.

Ryan - you are the perfect person to ask this question. There's alot of heated debate about whether or not it would be of any value to give Western jets to Ukraine due to their lack of training on these aircraft. As a fighter pilot yourself, what do you think? Imagine this scenario: your country is under attack and can't keep your F-16s and F-15s flying duel to losses and lack of spare parts. The UK comes in and says "we can give you Eurofighters". How long would it take you after jumping into the cockpit of a Eurofighter to become effective at using it to defend your country?
@boejiden7093
@boejiden7093 Год назад
It takes years to become skilled at using a fighter jet. Changing jets isnt like changing a car. Each fighter has its own capabilities. They are all good at some things and struggle in others. If a Mig pilot sits in an F-16, he’ll be confused af. He won’t know what does what not will he be able to understand the capabilities of the F-16. Each fighter has tactics developed for it and those tactics don’t work when using another fighter.

@@KawaTony1964 i’m learning how to fly now so kinda. But my instructor was a navy fighter pilot. So when I asked him your exact question, that was his response. Every fighter jet is different and has unique capabilities. To learn those capabilities takes time. To master them, takes even longer. If Ukraine had operated western jets before the invasion, perhaps we could have given them some fighters. But its not possible anymore
@mobiuscoreindustries
@mobiuscoreindustries Год назад
@@boejiden7093 Yep that is exactly it. Moreover most of the jets in the west, as well as their weapons, are purpose built as integrated platforms as part of a complete strike force package. While individual aircraft are good, its really when they are part of the entire force that they stand out to the point of having the ability to dismantle an entire nation's worth of infrastructure like they did in desert storm. Even the weapons we have currently sent, like HIMARS, already rely a lot on an enhanced level of intelligence gathering which we are also helping to provide, but for jets this needs the entire package. Even if we assume that AWACs can bee handled by NATO aircrafts operating outside the country, to maximise the effect of the BVR focused equipement would include - Reconnaissance aircraft or reconnaissance elements identifying targets ahead of time and with great precision - E-war fighters designed to degrade enemy air defense and sensor equipment, allowing all fighters a greater degree of operation. Lets say that we hand that off the AWACs and satellites - SEAD elements in order to seach, destroy, and supress enemy air defenses in order to gain air superiority. This is even more important considering Russia's meaty air defense system including near strategic level air defense systems - lots, and lots of BVR weapons and Joint standoff munitions being carried by all matter of aircraft, especially the stealth strike fighters and stealth fighters - the occasional CAS focused strike fighter or strike bomber only appearing once air is firmly in control and all outstanding AA threats are dealt with. - heavy platforms like the B-52 are near impossible to get close to the area anyways unless they are relegated to cruise missile spam which would put them outside of Ukraine's territory anyways. - B-1 is probably far too hard and risky to operate in a contested airspace even if its designed for airspace penetration (it could get in but unknown if it would get out) All those platforms are super complex to operate and NEED the support of the other platforms to maximize their effect

J-20s dont even have cannons. They are just stealth missile trucks. Still dangerous interceptors though due to some stealth, the large amounts of missiles they carry, and the type of long range missiles. Perhaps less dangerous to fighters but very bad for tankers, EW, and AWACS.

@reboundrides8132
@reboundrides8132 Год назад
I’m willing to bet you won’t sway his opinion on canards seeing as how he’s very well educated in aviation fighter technique and design. He knows the significant disadvantage of having them.
@thomaszhang3101
@thomaszhang3101 Год назад
Not only that, the vortex generated by the canard can also increase the lift of the main wing, again reducing drag. With modern flight by wire system and digital simulations to compensate for the complex aerodynamic shape of delta canards, I think it is a very attractive option for fighters.

Even the qualities are really so bad. That time, USA Grumman was helping China to upgrade their J 8 fighter into J 8ii. And Grumman engineering was so surprised that they don't even know what is qualities control and module manufacturing. And today after 40 years, they have their own 5th generation fighter. Wow... No matter what, they really do improve so fast.
