Was looking at this vid as a reference, and I think we are getting a little confused here Sharjah is not an NDB, it is a simple VOR. The frequency range is also that of a VOR. The second radio beacon at Dubai, now THAT is an NDB.

Hi Cap, I'm a "resting' gamer and civil pilot, I do enjoy your vids. Some info you may find helpful. The two Dubai beacons are 2 seperate types :- 1x NDB 'Delta Oscar' and 1x VORTAC 'SierraHotel Juliette'.A xxx.yy MHz beacon is a VOR/VORDME/VORTAC and a xxx.0 K Hz beacon is an NDB. You can only get course/ beam bar info from a VOR not an NDB. You can get direction/needle info from both The VOR may also have a DME or TACAN co located from which you can get range info from the TACAN receiver if a TACAN channel is published next to the freq/ident as in "70" in the case of SHJ

Sooo.....NDBs (non-directional beacons) operate in the KHz range, 190-1800KHz for international operations. ADF, or "Automatic Direction Finding," is the receiving system _in the aircraft_ that uses these NDBs to determine direction to the beacon. In fact, the ADF system in a real aircraft can be used to pick up any transmission in the 190-1800KHz range...including AM radio stations. You can actually get a bearing to an AM music radio station, and use that for simple navigation. A VOR operates in the MHz range, and is a different system entirely. It also provides direction only, but the system in the aircraft is entirely different. The frequency of the facility at Sharjah Intl. makes me certain that it is not an NDB. The symbol itself is the symbol for a VOR/DME, which should provide both direction and range, very similar to a TACAN. The F-5 in DCS World cannot listen to KHz frequencies, and therefore can't be used to listen to NDB facilities. It also has no VOR/DME system, and I guess that's why you use the ADF system in the plane to track the VOR portion of the VOR/DME at Sharjah. It's just like tracking an AM station or an NDB station, but you're up in the MHz range. www.differencebetween.net/technology/difference-between-adf-and-vor/ lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/9IUpNgLZKGpEaD0XjJC45yFMyi1_TaUkq2rKgO9dcYz_0ViH_zg7f2m-Xly-f_xkMvfNZqVx6bhfQrY5IVFKrqvHaaNm6-HmZml2rU87MW665Kvyleyv3TU

Exactly this. We are tuning the F-5E ADF to VOR stations because the F-5E has very limited capabilities (no VOR navigation, and no ADF dedicated VHF ADF receiver). Initially it's very confusing.. After learning how to use the ADF, in the end it's best to stick to TACAN and VFR, because there's only one radio anyway.. but it's a good backup system in case one gets really lost.

I was tripping in the Caucuses map! I thought my game was bugged or I didn't have it set up correctly! That's why I came here. Whew!...I feel stupid but relieved. Thanks Cap.

@@grimreapers well, it's true, Cap. Your vids make a hobby that seems very daunting at first, into something a bit more accessible. For me that means I get a bit of help learning the F-5, a jet my deceased grandfather was a key contributor on during his almost 20 or so years with the Northrop Corporation. It's a jet that I grew up around and have a strong connection with that not many people even realize exists (or they think it's a Mig-28 lol). The fact that you put this much time into it, for me at least, is pretty damn awesome. So keep up the great work! Maybe one day I will have this thing mastered enough to fly with you guys!

Again a very useful Grim Reapers video! PS if you manually set your course to the runway heading you can combine this NDB navigation with an approach also.

Great video! I don't know if it was added after this video but I wanted to make people aware that you can tune a MHz beacon in the caucuses - its at Kutasi Airport 113.60 MHz KT, just navigated in on it - thanks for all your tutorials!!

You don t have to set the position ADF on the UHF radio panel ( nonfuncional with the with UHF DF selected on the NAV MODE selector ).

Seems like a stupid question but does this mean you can't talk to anyone on the radio while you are navigating?
