I love how 80s videogame like the radar is on this plane and thinking about what it was like to get the plane and the manuals and stuff as a pilot in a developing nation that bought these from America. Would be so crazy like bless the Americans for this affordable Atari plane with which we can defend our freedom! (Ostensibly)

Very subtle indications! I had not noticed the "+" wasn't on the indicator until AFTER it was locked on....also it bothered me why, if the target was directly in front and you locked onto him, that the narrow sweep of the scan went to the left of the "+".... it's apparently so that you can see the center of the screen, which is (presumably) where the target is. Whatever the reason, it's normal for the narrow scan to go to the left.

Wait... wait... I can't watch radar without coffee. I always have coffee when I watch radar. You know this.

You did not even mention that the target acquisition can fail (which happens very often) and how to deal with that.

40 miles. Pretty good range.

I thought there was something you had to do with the cage/uncage function for the sidewinder?
@benaguilar1787
@benaguilar1787 2 года назад
The uncage button is EXTREMELY useful, but not so much for this situation. Normally the seeker head of the sidewinder looks straight ahead, boresighted with your plane. However, holding the uncage button after you get tone allows the sidewinder to continue tracking the target even when it is off-axis from your plane. So the way you use this is to get tone, hold uncage, pull lead, then fire. This makes the shot easier for your sidewinder, because it is being launched at a more optimal angle. In this demonstration the missile was launched from directly behind the bandit, and the bandit did not have much angular velocity, so uncaging the seeker head would not have been very useful. Much more useful against fighters that are manuevering aggressively.

It is somewhat misleading to say that the radar has no range limit, since it gets thinned out at long distances, which decreases the radar return until you cannot distinguish contacts from radar clutter.
@grimreapers
@grimreapers 5 лет назад
meh yeh I see what you mean, but the radiation technically never stops, assuming it never hits any matter right?
@TiramisuCorleone
@TiramisuCorleone 5 лет назад
Yes, of course you are right. However, that is actually not relevant in practice, because it is not the detection range you are talking about. I just wanted to comment on this, because you are mentioning this in every radar tutorial. ;)

@@TiramisuCorleone He clarified the difference between the range of the RADAR radiation beams(electromagnetic waves which, unless attenuated, will continue forever) being infinite and the RADAR view which is limited to around 40 miles. So, to your point, he has made that distinction. He just threw a little bit of EM wave theory into the equation.

Does the seeker tone on the missile matches the lock on the radar? like if there is two planes next to each other and I need to prioritize my shoot on a specific target like on a bomber instead of a fighter that is next to him or the radar and the missile locks in differents things?
@MarvinCZ
@MarvinCZ 4 года назад
No, the Sidewinder seeker is independent of the radar. It looks forward and locks what it sees there.

He wasn’t splashed. I’ve put two sidewinders up a TU 95’s tail and it still manages to land safely.

A good placed gun burst works far better. Small aa missiles hardly causing noticable damage on a nuclear bomber. Better aiming the inner part of one of the wings (or the engines on same side) and use the guns. Those big birds will fly like a brick after losing a wing..

To be clear - it has IFF, it just isn't integrated in the RADAR. All military aircraft have IFF, but in it's most primitive form it's just a transponder that sends out an encrypted code - the encryption key is updated daily. My final in AFTA was troubleshooting IFF ;). Gawd I love this aircraft though. For more reasons than just DCS Alone. It's really had a big impact on my life. My dad worked for Northup, so seeing the pedals with the big Northup logo was pretty cool. He later started his own shop, and had a lot of contracts from Northrup. I helped him when I was a teenager in the 80s and I made many parts that went on various jets. From the F5, to the F18, we made the parts. He had contracts from other big companies, so we made parts for the F14 as well as the B1. Later while watching Top Gun in high school I was impressed by the F5 again. Of course I knew it was an F5 - they used to mock dogfight above my dad's shop since his shop was about 5 miles from Northrup in Gardena, CA. Well I ended up joining the Navy and became an AT because of that movie, so again it had an impact in my life. Now it's my favorite jet to fly in DCS. Sure the '18 is more modern and can do so much, but I like simplicity :)

@Name-ps9fx
@Name-ps9fx 2 года назад
Yes the selected range shows on the left side of the scope. To determine range to target, remember "0" is at the bottom of the scope, and the range selected is at the top. If you've selected "20 miles", divide 20 by 5 (number of lines) = each line on the scope represents 4 miles (4*5= 20). If the target is on the first line, it's 4 miles away....second line 8 miles, etc. At the 5 mile setting, 5miles/5 = each line is 1 mile distance.

@@BrljoMrljo Ask AWACS for a Bogey Call, and they'll give direction, distance and altitude...with this, you can adjust the F-5's heading etc and, with a slow up/down antenna adjustment, it is possible to detect the Bogey from 15-20 miles away. As you get closer, you should be able to see the plane....I'm able to see the pixel from about 5 miles away, and by 2 miles I can make out the shape and ID the aircraft.

@@BrljoMrljoHe probably estimated using the grid background. Weirdly enough, the Grid Background in search mode gives distance, the left and right numbers give angles, and the horizon thing in the center shows which way the radar array itself is pointed. The top of the radar display is the max selected range (5, 10, 20, 40), and the increments are each 1/4 of that distance apart. You can count them and do some guesstimating to get the target range. Or just call bogey dope like a normal human because intercept radars are more meant to lock targets you already know are there rather than actually find anything
