[4K UHD] F/A-18C Hornet rearmed and refueled between missions by Finnish Air Force conscripts during a remote road base exercise. The FinAF doctrine is to use the conscripts in every part of aircraft operations and maintenance. The turnaround time for rearm + refuel is 10 minutes in normal operations. This is a media event with photo shooting and interview of the pilot in between.
In the annual road base exercises the soldiers doing their time in the army get to practise outside their home AF bases. At the same time the pilots get a refresh course on operating on tiny road bases.

Lapland Air Command conducted the Baana 20 road base exercise at the Hosio highway strip in Ranua, Lapland from 7 to 11 September 2020. The road base airfield was established at the regional road no. 924.
Readiness to operate out of a dispersed base network is a part of the Finnish Air Force doctrine, which emphasizes mobility. Thus, all Finnish fighter pilots train how to fly from temporary operating bases. Baana 20 included take-offs and landings at a road base, established on a strip of regional road no. 924 near the village of Hosio in the municipality of Ranua.
Baana 20 features F/A-18 Hornet multi-role fighters, Hawk jet trainers, as well as transport and liaison aircraft. The aircraft participating in the exercise will operate out of their home bases. Both active-duty personnel and conscripts will take part the exercise. Baana 20 will be led by Lieutenant Colonel Tomi Iikkanen, Commander of Fighter Squadron 11, Lapland Air Command.
The flight operations of Baana 20 were flown between 7.-10.9.2020 with flight operations scheduled between 9 am and midnight each day.
The exercise area is reserved exclusively for military aviation. All civilian aviation, including drones/UAVs, is strictly forbidden in the vicinity of the Hosio highway strip from 7 to 11 September.

Lapin lennosto järjestää Baana 20 -maantietukikohtaharjoituksen Ranuan Hosiolla 7.‒11. syyskuuta 2020. Valmius hajautetun tukikohtaverkoston käyttöön on osa Ilmavoimien liikkuvaa taistelutapaa. Toiminta maantietukikohdissa kuuluu kaikkien hävittäjälentäjien koulutukseen. Baana 20 -harjoituksessa suoritetaan lentokoulutusohjelmien mukaisia laskeutumisia ja lentoonlähtöjä Ranuan Hosiolle perustettavassa maantietukikohdassa.
Lentotoiminnassa on mukana F/A-18 Hornet monitoimihävittäjiä, Hawk-suihkuharjoituskoneita sekä kuljetus ja yhteyskoneita. Harjoitukseen osallistuvat koneet tukeutuvat omiin kotitukikohtiinsa. Baana 20 -harjoitukseen osallistuu Ilmavoimien henkilöstöä ja varusmiehiä.

The Boeing F/A-18 C/D Hornet - the main fighter type of the Finnish Air Force since 1992
The main fighter type of the Finnish Air Force is the American Boeing (formerly McDonnell-Douglas) F-18 Hornet Multirole Fighter. The aircraft was designed in the 1980’s originally for the U.S. Naval Air Force. In 1992 the Hornet was chosen to replace the Swedish Saab 35 Drakens and Soviet MiG 21 bis fighters of the Finnish Air Force. The Hornet won the bidding contest against Swedish, French and American competitors. The Finnish Patria Ltd. has constructed most of the F-18 Hornets used in Finland.
The fleet of the Finnish Air Force consists nowadays of 62 Hornets, 55 single-seat C-variants and seven two-seat D-variants. The aircraft are to be replaced in the 2020’s.

The F-18 seems to be every bit as suitable to these sort of operations as the JAS-39 Gripen. Many Gripen fans would have you believe that only the Gripen has the ability to operate this efficiently from highways. But the Finns have proven the exact same methods of operation can be accomplished using the Hornet. We're talking a small maintenance team consisting mainly of conscripts, rearming and refueling the aircraft in about 10 minutes.

Saab is very good at marketing. Maybe they do it with a smaller crew, but that really isn't a problem (conscription!). Actual maintenance is then another thing but that's also something FAF can handle on hornets. But the procedures should be easier on Gripen as it was designed from that perspective.
