@@apl1393 Don't worry too much about it. DCS is meant to be fun, and taking your time is absolutely fine. Don't rush, you aren't a fighter pilot, so take your time
Just wanted to say how much your tutorial videos have improved as of late. When you essentially questioned someone else I found it difficult to follow. With just you speaking after doing your research these videos are very informative and quite clear despite how much info you are giving. This subject is a great example of that - very complex yet delivered very clear. Really well done.
These videos with all the buffoonery cut out are great. I'd avoided the Grim Reapers tutorial videos hitherto. Looking forward to more revised ones now!
What the hell is LNS?!? Cap your videos are awesome, but you really need to SLOW DOWN and really explain it. Abbreviations and acronyms don’t work when you are explaining it to people that don’t know what those mean by heart yet.
Cap, I just wanted to say that your videos are outstanding. You make things extremely easy to follow and understand. Considering the complexity of these systems you simplify it in such a way that makes it enjoyable to learn and easy to absorb. Keep up the good work and thank you from all of us for taking time out of your own schedule to put these excellent videos together. Top notch!!
Really like your clear classic english. Altough quite fast, i understand everythg on spot as non english native speaker. Thanks a lot for your guides!! I am old IL2 46 vet. Grew up with Strike commander , Microprose and Falcon =) Maybe you took part in SEOW operations back in time? Operation Cerberus and such. Your voice sounds familiar to me. 15/JG52 SPW S!
Hey cap, just started learning F18. Im using that mission link in your description. While in TWS mode on manual, 4 bars and 40deg, the radar does not follow the TDC cursor. It stays centered. Any idea what I may be doing wrong?
Whats funny is DCS is so expensive. Thustamster Warthog costed me $560, F-18C - $80 dollars, Thrustmaster rudder peddals $250. Best cockpits $80 bucks a pop. PC Gaming rig $6000 dollars. Shit the computer and it accsories is almost the cost of a jet fighter...hahah...naw not even close. Jet Fighters cost $80 million. B2 Stealth bomber $2 billion dollars. Yeah I am posting a lot, but I love this shit. I think about jet fighters 24/7 it is my passion. And space ships like a TIE Interceptor.
Oh yeah trackIR 5..$200 dollars. Unless you want to wear a hat. I know there are good prices on Ebay, but I rather just buy a brand new kit. Ebay maybe, but Amazon.com has a decet price, and just realiable its not, fucked up, or wierdness. I don't like Ebay. But TrackIR 5 about $70 bucks, on Ebay
I just bought the Hornet - I never realised that the Hornet's Betty came from the Southern USA. In the Harrier when Betty starts nagging me, I'm like " Shut up you fucking bitch, give it a fucking rest will you ? " But when Hornet Betty tells me not to do something I'm all " Yes darling, anything you say sweetie " And I'm not even American...
I've watched tons of tutorials for various things like coding, commercial aviation, game dev, but these are the most straight forward. You are amazing at teaching.
Every feature in this airplane works for me like that. Mess around with it for a while, look up a tutorial video, mess around some more and eventually I will get somewhat of an understanding how stuff works.
still struggling, doing 8v8 bvr in the f18 and I only ever manage to lock and kill 1 target, then just get blown to bits out of nowhere, really struggling.
7:48 wrong: the position of the aircraft from the bullseye is 90°/ 50 miles as directly below the center of the lower axis. He talks about the BRA to the TDC.
You know I come to Grim reapers because they have every video of every plane. Many channels don’t continue their videos. And now their tutorials are improving.
At least 4 views are mine. There's such a density of information to unpack. Thank you for doing what you are Cap. I found that, in this mission (which I also learned to download and install from you) I found that if a hornet driver were to get overly excited to try out their newly acquired skills, and say, try to splash these targets, you've made them immortal. But, plenty of fun, anyway.
Dude, you need to Slow down your pace when you speak. It's a 30 minute video. Don't speak like you've hit x2 on an audio book. Point for all your videos, edit: also i use your videos to learn how to fly these things. They are very informative, just the speed thing, makes it a little hard to follow.
Cap, thanks for the video! The RWS/140/6B/80 its the radar configuration recomended for cnatra to initial radar sanitization of the air space, you need to increase the memory time to 16 seconds and put your TDC at 25.
My dream in life was to be a fighter pilot or AH-64D pilot. I am obviously not of that calibur. It is the hardest profession in life. Only the best in the world can fly a fighter jet. The top 1%. But DCS, makes it possible to live our dream. And without fear of real death. But we don't get the TOP Secret information, that would be cool to know. But people dream to be in major league sports and that kind of high profile thing. Most of us can't do it. Being a Rock Star, won't happen, Famouse actor probably not. But DCS gives us something. And Thrustmaster Warthog. And more Digitial toys we can buy to live our dream; like trackIR 5. Thank god for computers. I can't imagine living without one.
Ha! Funny you say that - i chose being a rock star over joining the (Australian) Army as a chopper pilot. My grades weren't good enough to go straight into choppers sadly, - i would have had to go in as infantry and grind through the internal courses. And at the time there weren't that many choppers in the army - now it bums me that i could be now flying Oh -58s, Blackhawks, Tiger, Chinook and soon Australia has plans for 29 Apaches!!!! Through the old Ka-50 module I found that i certainly do have the aptitude to learn the systems of an attack chopper. This Sim has given me immense satisfaction ( and a little regret ).
@@craigmoran893 Weird, I Am a pro heavy metal drummer myself. I would rather be a fighter pilot than anything else in the world. But yeah, I was to dumb, never even went to high school. But the restrictions to be a fighter pilot are extreme, only the top 1% make it, and vision is a big deal. But here is the kicker. If you have commercial flight experience at a young age, the USAF or possibly the Navy may allow you to go to military flight school. Attack Helicopters are a different story. I would have love have been an Ah-64D Longbow Attack Helicopter pilot. It is not as hard as fighter pilot. You just need to become a Warrent Officer. Anyway Rock on man...that what I am doing to, smaching my drums into pieces.
The most important part is to get a recomendation from a Senator. Then vision and even not having a bachelors degree can be waived. your not an officer basically. I wish I would have know that when I was young. Then I would have spent my college money on going to a commercial flight school. Then you have a shot at becoming a fighter pilot. Without the traditional way. You know, get Straight A's in high school, graduate college, have perfect vision and make the military flight acedemy. R.O.T.C for the USAF can even be waived if you are a commerical pilot and young. Being young is key. Not sure if the US Navy does this or Marine core. But the real trick is getting that Senators recomandation. Even the traditional way requires a Senators Rec.
DCS is serious business. When I was young most sims sucked. This is not a video game this is the real deal. DCS is absolutely amazing. But my point is, I am very surprised the USAF, NAVY, Marines and Arymy have not made their own exlusive RU-vid channels on how to fly these, miracle war machines, in DCS. The jet fighter is the best thing man has ever done. Attack helicopters and bombers as well. But DCs could be a pretty amazing recruiting tool. Be nice to have a real F-18 fighter pilot show us how its really done. Or any fighter pilot for any jet for that matter. F-16, F-18, A-10C, F-14. All the best cockpits DCS has to offer. And the AH-6D Longbow Apache is coming!!!!! Gonna buy that the day it comes out. I seriously cannot wait, go Eagle Dynamics! They are bad ass. I wanted to work for them, but they said no...haha.
somehow nothing works like he explains it anymore. The buttons are different, for example TDC depress in RWS once doesn't STT the target but only marks it. Twice -> STT. Undesignate doesn'T work then either, you have to press RESET. It's outdated I'm afraid.
my fav bit of caps vids are that he shows all the controls you need. ty cap. edit;sometimes in tutorials they will say "do this" but sometimes use an alternative name or abbreviation for the control or system, or in other words, if you dont know what they are saying it makes it hard to look up the toggle in the controls search
I'm just about ready to give up on The f18 radar! Information overload, not to mention 2 stage IFF, spend more time head down at scope than flying! Honestly I don't know how they do all this in real life and maintain Visual SA! What with NTCR, LTWS, TWS, STT! Press, depress ect…. getting more complex all the time! As great as it is I'm regretting buying the F18! Thanks Caps Happy belated birthday and a very Merry Christmas!
Tim Munroe Try learning the F16 first. It’s slightly less complex so it would serve as a good stepping stone. Having flown F4.0 in the past, I’m surprised at how much more complex the F18’s radar is too.
Hey Tim. I don;t use the Hornet for A-A because it is so complex. My advice is to keep it simple. Just use RWS with LTWS(standard setup) and just stick with STT to lock guys and fire at them.
23:20 I think that the radar does not transpond when you hover the TCS over a target. But rather all the information is present in this mode and it just appear when you hover the mouse over it.
I post all this stuff because my passion is military aircraft and I have no friends. So I love to talk about this. When I do talk to people I know they want nothing to do with it. They don't love war like me. I want to know people who love this as much as I do and talk about jet fighters all day. So here I am. trying to be with my people. Who love this shit. DCS Fighter Pilots. Real Fighter Plot that aint happening.
AH-64D Longbow Attack Helicopters saw a lof of combat in the Middle East. But fighter pilots, it is really rare these days. Some fighter pilots have even said the job is boring. But in Vietnam, F4 pilots rocked ACM all day and night. That shit was no joke. Thats why DCS needs to make the F4 Phantom II $80 dollar cockpit. The A-10 and the F-117 Stealth saw some action in the Middile East. A little F-15, which I think was CIA black ops. But in this day and age fighter pilots don't really see any action. If any at all. All countries are not interested in a tango with US Fighter pilots. Russian fighter pilots have shown disrepsect and iresponsible behavior recently though. Towards the USAF.
As a new player, I really appreciate the effort and video. Although quick (I had to re-watch and pause a lot), it's very well done. Learning more Hornet A/A each day. And... thanks for the mission, that helped a lot! Cheers...
10:45 this part is so wrong: he always mixes up the bearing and range from the bull's eye and the bearing and range from the aircraft. 90°/50.6 is obviously aircraft to bull's eye, BRA is obviously chaning when he's changing the TDC, so it's the bearing and range from the aircraft to the TDC.
Great vid. Sometimes be careful you just pass over concept which I think you should explain in such video because it's make it chinese if you don't understand. For example: what is a track file? What does "interogate a track file mean", what is high or medium prf? What are their respective uses? What is "launch & support". Without understanding those concepts it's impossible to understand what those difference radar mode actually do and when to use them over another. You explain very well how to navigate between those modes, but I still don't understand why I should use one or another and what it means in bvr. It would help you explained things in a way like "if you're in this situation X, then use this mode because..." or "if your objective is Y, then it's recommended to ... because ... "
Its actually wierd, how so many dudes want to be a fighter pilot. I mean it was my dream. But it is so dangerous and difficult. And the steps are so envolved, it is harder to get into it than major league sports. We don't even see fighter pilots getting into a dog fight or A/G missions. A/A BVR combat is extremely rare these days. But if it does happen, you better know what the fuck you are doing. Having a bandit on your six...oh man...that has to be scary considering your career as a fighter pilot and the cost of the fighter plane. Ejecting is not a good thing and probably a terrifying experience. Thats why we have DCS..haha.
James G.Burton was required to define BVR in his job at USAF as there was not a understandable BVR definition or scale. Based to the real visual spotting capabilities by real pilots at various size aircrafts, it was found that acceptable BVR range was 5 kilometers. Past 10 kilometers started the BVR as spotting a fighter size targets became very challenging or impossible in optimal scenario, and we talk about fighters like F-14 or F-15 in size. While against smaller fighters like F-5 or MiG-21 the distance fell IIRC below 2 kilometers. Why we have now 10 nmi (18.5 kilometers) that is extremely overstated range for a fighter size targets. Sure a 747 or A-50 can be spotted at those ranges but fighters not unless you really know where to look and attitude supports it with background.
Why do people watch this then complain if they don't know what the SCS is. You said at the start people need to understand the basics before they start watching this. Ridiculous.
I once had a pretty good grasp on RWS/TWS on the c.1988 version of F-18 Hornet on the Macintosh :) I think it was made by Gravis Simulations? I don't even recall if there was an actual cockpit view....... like it was all "lookdown" or satellite view. And at that time it was considered cutting edge..... until the Amiga version of Falcon, it seemed it'd be a decade until an actual flight sim with 'pit would make it to the shelves. Absolutely awesome show, sir...... thanks for the excellence and generosity thereof!
With all the modifiers I have set plus normal, my pov hat has like 5 different functions now to control all this stuff. Confusing as hell, but as long as I don't accidentally shoot a friendly while I'm trying to roll trim, we're good!
would just like to thankyou for making this video and all the ones iv watched and are about to. much needed help on a very steep learning curve. Im only about three weeks into my DCS journey and i just cant wait to become some kind of adept to enjoy some midnight sorties on a cold winters night and trying to land a cat lll. the fun im estimating is unbelievable. haha fly safe. Thanks
Great video as always cap. Played this module for about 10 hours before watching, and was wondering why none of my radar guided missiles were working... the radar was off.
Lol back here again and saw my old comment. The first 3 months were pretty much not fun at all, holy hell everything was so overwhelming knowing nothing even about avitation. almost 2 years later this is one of my absolute main hobbies. Such an impressive work of Eagle Dynamics
Wow, that was a LOT of words, all very fast and amazing! Thank you for the hard work on these videos. Do you see these symbols and buttons and modes in your sleep? 😀 I'm wondering if, once my knowledge and memory of all of this information gets to certain level - is it still possible to know how to do anything else? Like, a job, for instance lol.
Just discovered this series of vids and they're great, so thankyou! Really helped me out as a new DCS and F18 "user". One thing I have noticed though is that as soon as I switch to AA mode DDI1 immediately changes back to "Stores" (I usually have it in EWS). I haven't seen this behaviour in any other vids, am I missing some setup options as I am starting in the air or is it a bug/feature?
Very usefull with the picture of modes and submodes. Please use this method where it can be used. Its a powerfull tool. Some people learn best visual, others audio. This way both parties are covered. Keep up the good work.
Hi guys, is this still up to date? I have heavy trouble to use my radar since 2.7 update, i am constantly jammed and can see enemys not even if they are directly in front sometimes.
great video, coming from a10c to f18 is a challenging experience and RDR has been something that no training mission deal with well. This tutorial helped a lot esp along side the mission file!
Cap please list the control as it is listed in the controls menu. All this information on the proper names, and what they do is great; but let's get the point, shall we?
Another excellent video lesson. Your videos got me proficient in the A10, now I am learning the F/A18. This is the hardest subject between both planes so far. You delivery is amazing and to the point. Keep up the good work.
Hi all. I've downloaded the mission and I'm stuck with a problem at 26:53 - azimuth scan is following CAP's TDC wherever it moves. I can't make that happen - it's always stuck in the middle. Only when I push TDC depress, scan area moves around that position (and stays there until I push RESET or slew TDC somewhere else and then TDC depress again). Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong... please help
