Clear to see how physically demanding it was for the drivers then.
@TheOklep
@TheOklep 8 лет назад
+Dez Rosswess yes and no. Yes, it was more physically demanding in terms of raw muscle power, but nowadays it is much much more physically demanding in terms of stamina and body fitness. In other words, Mansell was overweight and Senna had really bad stamina, yet both were great. Today, they would have no chance like that. Nowadays F1 drivers experiences G forces over 5G, which is the amount where normal person would blackout. And they are experiencing it few times per lap, and for 2 hours straight. Also temperature in cockpit which is up to 60 degree celsius is pretty demanding (drivers can lost around 4kg per one GP). All in all, today it is not as power demanding as in the past, but it is very demanding due to fitness and mental challenge.

And no, 5 G doesn't make a normal person black out, unless it is negative G, which they rarely feel, only on the top of Eau Rouge for example. The cockpit temperatures haven't changed much over the years. But in neither case it reached 60 degrees, that was in closed cockpit racing like a le mans prototype.

Round steering wheel? Check. Analogue dials? Check. Manual shifter? Check. Sounds trivial but it's these cars with their relative simplicity that are the easiest to fantasize about driving when you're behind the wheel of your shitty 1.1 litre Fiesta or Corsa when you're giving it some welly round some old British country roads. The technology of the modern cars is impressive but it makes them seem.. alien.. a world apart. I prefer the raw driving skills of this era.

a great example of why F1 "felt" more spectaculair to the fans at the time. The combination of vibrations and distorions on the onboard cameras, and the slighting hard working driver in his battle to keep the car on track with massive amounts of horsepower, big tires for good mechanical grip and somewhat low downforce due to the less developed aerodynamics if you compare it with today. And let's be honest.. the atmospheric V8/V10/V12 engines brought F1 it's big worldwide breakthru in the 90's and 00's, but these 80's turbo V6 engines sounded not at all bad... what a difference with the boring engine sound of todays Turbo V6 hybrids.

Kris A I disagree for a reason: in the 1986 season, the last with the monstruous turbo cars of 1000 bhp, this was the only car with onboard cameras in that season. See this point of view, in HD, of this agressive cars is absolutely unique. The first Senna's true onboards (full speed recordings) date from 1989, with aspirated cars, that are very far of this level of power and low downforce. And Senna didn't drive on the middle of the grid...

McGuinty2 The cars that did that were the naturally aspirated V8s which couldn't compete with the savage turbos for power, so the teams ran the cars underweight in the race, and would top them up again with water before the officials scrutinised them.

I'm not that kind of guy saying like "Real men drives manual shif gearbox". But if there's one race of the whole season calendar where all drivers have to race with manual stick gear, that would be fun. I would definitely watch that like you.

just because they don't have manual transmission but a sequential doesn't mean its easier driving style required for driving 80s vs modern cars is totally different modern f1 cars require perfect control over grip incredible precision and a healthy body to withstand the forces. the race is not changing their focus away from driving is just a stupid myth boomers like to spread to make themselves feel special :/

If i had the choice to do a few laps with whatever F1 car of the past decades i wish, i'd definitely go for a 1986 turbo F1 car in qualifying setup. The beastly sound, the beastly acceleration, going through all 5 gears in a matter of seconds. Berger himself said those where the scariest cars he's ever driven.

Those Downshifts!!!!! Ohhhhh! What an amazing sound it is!! \m/ \m/. Please Bernie and Co....... bring back V8s if not V10s or V12s. All those who dislike the sound of the current relatively quiet V6 turbo engines and believe that the sound of an F1 engine is a big part of the F1 experience, please like this comment and comment that you prefer louder V6 turbos or V8s/V10s/V12s anyday over the current V6 turbo engines.

+AriffTF2 Neither am I saying that the modern V6 turbo engines are bad in terms of their technical capability or that the sound of an F1 engine is everything nor that technology needs to remain the same forever, because that is not how I feel. :) I'm saying that the sound of an F1 engine is hugely important because it is my personal opinion. :). Plus I also think that Bernie and Co. need to listen to drivers a bit more and get rid of so much of aero grip and give the drivers more mechanical grip in their cars and get rid of DRS. Thanks for sharing your views and I agree with you mostly.

If you think the current engines aren’t loud, you need to go and see the cars in person. Trust me, when one of them flies by doing 200mph at Monza, you’d still have to cover your ears. I think the problem people have is that they aren’t high pitched enough, rather than them being quiet.

This is a 1.5L V6 turbo, while current F1 cars use 1.6L V6 turbo engines. There were also 1.5L turbocharged inline-4 engines, which are much louder, and sound WAY better than the current V6 turbo-hybrid motors.

@Tuppoo94

+JTthestreetking No, the rev counter needle, which I suppose is on the left, doesn't seem to follow engine RPM. Also, I hear him switching gears when his hand is nowhere near the gear lever.

+Tuppoo94 It's just the audio synchronization, it must be because of how old the video is and the fact that it was one of the very first cameras to go live in Formula 1 History.

+GhostsKuriboh That's probably not it, because you can hear at 0:05 that he revs his engine but the gauge on the dash reacts at 0:09, so there's a 4 second delay.
