As a model flyer of over 50 years, the introduction of the quadcopter 'drone' coupled with new pilots who have shunned common sense and safety, we now reap the restrictions created by their actions. Personally i don't see an issue catching those who intentionaly disregard regulation but its too late to turn back the clock to the freedom we once had. 😢

I am a section 107 drone pilot here in Las Vegas. LVMPD has a terrorism unit that monitors the Las Vegas Strip called Metro Fusion. I email them my LAANC approval anytime I’m down near the strip when I fly. I tell them specifically where I will be when I fly. Since I’ve done this, I’ve noticed my LAANC approvals get faster FAA approval. I don’t know if it’s connected but that’s what I’ve experienced recently. No problems with Metro Police since I started emailing them my flight plans.I’ve flown the MSG Sphere which is in class b airspace and I get approved very quickly now. I’ve been told about this tracking system they have and that it goes after the controller itself not the drone. I’ve also been told that there are specific police officers during big events like this that are section 107 certified and know the laws about drone flying. More than likely the officers that stopped this clown during f1 know the drone laws federally and on a state level. Not an area to mess around in!

Its actually called Fusion Watch and during F1 they were working with the FAA, DHS, and CBP who were all on site. Since it was a SEAR 2 event they did have special Drone response units. They also also had drone mitigation at the event but don't know if they used it. The tracking system they used is called Aerial Armor by DeDrone.

I live in Las Vegas. If you look at a sectional chart you'll see that Reid Airport is right on the strip (Las Vegas Blvd) across the street from Mandaly Bay resort. Class B airspace (among the most controlled in USA) covers the entire F1 course. The strip is heavily flown by sight-seeing helicopters nightly. This guy is simply an idiot to try to mix drone traffic into and at a time of the most regulated and heavily trafficked commercial airspace. There have been local news articles about helicopters calling in the idiots flying drones near them along the strip, basically ruining any chance of clearance for professional Part 107 licensed drone photographers.

It looks like he launched from the top level of a parking structure. There are lots of hotel / casinos with big parking structures in Las Vegas. I worked in the hotel / casino industry in LV for decades. Instead of a lot of high tech wizardry and police work, my, educated, guess would be that security / surveillance observed his actions and contacted the police who then knew exactly where he was and responded. This belief is partly supported by the good surveillance video. Video that shows him getting out of his car and placing the drone for take off as opposed to starting as the police are pulling up. Either way, the drone guy was stupid.

Has absolutely nothing to do with safety reasons....they want money. Nothing more. If it was about safety they wouldnt allow you to pay for permits to fly. Just because details are important in this situation I feel I should mention two things... 1. in the US the old 5-mile rule which required notification is long gone. There is no 5 mile exclusion zone. There is controlled airspace which in some places may be a 5-mile radius, or it may be a different shape and size. Note 2: it is not unlawful to fly drones in controlled airspace, on the Vegas strip or anywhere else where a TFR exists. It's only unlawful to do so without the proper authorization. The blanket statement that it's illegal to fly on the Vegas strip is an oversimplification and it's just wrong 😞
@Tangent360
@Tangent360 7 месяцев назад
I feel like a lot of people really have no idea about the rules and requirements of flying a drone. When I got my Mini 2 I already knew to get the TRUST certificate and get an app that would show areas where I am and am not allowed to fly. If I'd simply seen the drone on the shelf at Costco and bought it because it seemed fun I'd have no idea of any of that; I'd just be counting on the drone app itself to stop me from launching when I'm not supposed to fly and I'd have no idea *why* it was stopping me. What makes this really frustrating is that instead of doing something about that, they simply pile more restrictions and requirements on the people who already follow the rules. Not to mention they make it more dangerous for them with remote ID showing the pilot's location to every crazy "yer spying on me!" whacko who might get violent about your totally legal flight.

In my neighborhood (USA) we have a major drone activity problem. From nighttime flights over residences and random drone operators to peeping drones. The last example (peeping drones) was the latest issue for me. The drone operator was quite obviously casing out each and every back yard and provoking/taunting the dogs. When the drone flew over my house it dipped down within 20 ft of my dog and I. The drone followed us step by step encroaching as it did so. I decided to go inside and call the police. The drone followed me to the door and loitered there for a minute then, flew around the house to each door and window. When the police arrived, they said there wasn't much they could do unless it entered the house or caused harm or damage. But that if I damaged the drone I would be cited. The Drone operator was accompanied by three vehicles and a couple of kids. They were driving through the neighborhood stopping periodically. The drone had a camera of which was absolutely pointed at me and my dog. I am in support of the major curtailing of drone operations and a legal framework for citation, sanctions and more. Thank you for the video.

I think it's good there are local law enforcement agencies that are proactively enforcing drone laws, and it's good they shared it to get the word out. I feel bad for the pilot if he didn't know any better. Anyone can walk into a store, purchase a drone for a few hundred dollars and start flying it without knowing about the laws. I feel the FAA and local authorities should be doing more to educate the public about the rules. I also think it might not be a bad idea to consider requiring proof of passing the trust exam or part 107 certificate in order to purchase a drone. I found the location and verified that it is in 0-grid airspace, meaning that a waiver must be obtained from the FAA in order to fly there and a part 107 certificate is required. During the sporting event there was probably a TFR also.

That location is near the corner of Koval and Harmon, which is very near the airport. A stone's throw, if Patrick Mahome is throwing it. His flight path was skirting the edge of one of the busiest airports in the country. (He wasn't flying over the Strip at all). Of course the police Homeland Security unit was monitoring the area for drones, and of course they sent multiple units to nail him. They would have been monitoring that area 24/7/365 even if there was no F1 race at all, and they would have nailed him anyway.

One of my thoughts, based on you saying there is a standing flight restriction the operator most likely had to get a DJI unlock to make that flight. I would assume without having proper information it was likely illegitimately unlocked however that is done. Play stupid games and win stupid prizes... To bad we couldn't have been doing this with flights that aren't legit before we had to change the hobby as we know it...

It does seem as though you could make it work with some special effort, especially with the aid of a co-conspirator. (*) But all that work would establish beyond a reasonable doubt that you had a clear intent to violate the law, leading to the maximum possible penalties if you got caught somehow. (*) Step 1: Buy the drone over the counter, paying with cash. No personally identifying information captured. Step 2. Register and activate the drone with the manufacturer using an alias email address and phony personal information. And using a VPN to obfuscate your IP address. Step 3. Do as you said and fly a waypoint mission. In the mission settings, choose "Land" for the action when it reaches the final Waypoint and the mission is finished. Step 4. Be moving as the mission is being flown. Drive in the opposite direction of the landing spot. Turn off your controller once the drone lands. Step 5. Your accomplice is stationed at the endpoint. They have no electronic connection to what's happening. They scoop up the drone, turn it off, and leave the area. But if you get caught, as by the coincidence of there being a LEO at the end point who busts the accomplice, or by a security camera that captures your license plate, then you're dead meat on a stick.

There's nothing unusual about this. Harry Reid Airport has been using Aeroscope for many years. Their system shows that on average, there are 300 drone incursions within the restricted airspace around the airport every day. In terms of getting caught, the guy's mistake was trying to fly his drone from a spot right there in the middle of things, right where the heavy law enforcement presence was concentrated. I guarantee you that there were a few dozen other drones flying from locations off the Strip, without getting caught. I'm not defending the guy or the illegal activity.
