When getting my licence I remember thinking some of these questions are ridiculous... who would be stupid enough to think flying a drone close to other aircraft would be a good idea... and now I know these people actually exist

I think most normal people would understand the risk and what could happen. I knew people years ago who thought it was funny to roll boulders down hills onto trails and potentially people below. We are myriad range of intellect and respect for each other, I guess.

Exactly ! I received the cubscout knife at 7yo. Carried a knife all my life. it Never occured to me to stab anyone! It's not the drone, gun, knife, et cetra it's the fact we closed the Insane Asylums in the late 60's- 70's. We never locked our doors or vehicles, no need to. Till 1972 the reality hit and we locked up everything.

Mr. Adams a drone hitting a manned aircraft could have very bad outcomes. Put yourself if you can of being in a helicopter with or without doors open and something hits your tail rotor your over a city and going down in a crash landing. You are 98% chance of not surviving, that would be on a best-case accident.

As an airplane pilot, I do worry a lot about how a drone can bring down an aircraft... Not intentionally hopefully, but is a danger to others where bringing down an aircraft can cause death and serious on the aircraft and people on the ground...

The more important thing is to avoid such situations, rather than finding the pilot after such risky flights happened. That's where a transponder system can help - whether its Remote ID or something a bit more anonymous but that still sends a signal to others around it and maybe has the option to trigger fail safe if it gets too close to an airplane or something similar.

That pilot seems like a jerk. He lives in a very wealthy neighborhood by the ocean where houses like the one he is seen flying from are worth 10 to 20 million dollars. I live in CA, I know that neighborhood, it's very exclusive because of the natural beauty. Lets just say he acts like he is entitled to do anything he wants with that kind of money. If you watch the videos he posted with his young son, he taunts him and puts him in kind of risky situations and thinks its funny. So not a surprise he's been caught taunting other aircraft. With that kind of money and good lawyers it's probably wont serve any jail time. So in a way he's correct, he can afford to be an a-hole.

Let’s not forget the government always over dramatizes any event and intentionally twits the context to make it sound life an death. Example if you were flying your drone and a helicopter saw it from 1 mile out and had no idea what direction you were flying even though you were flying away from said helicopter, the pilot would take evasive action and report it as a near miss. You’d be in court about to lose your freedom and would you want the rest of us to take the government and medias word on what happened ? Would you like us to be quick to judge or abandon you ? I don’t believe you would. I’ve had some experience dealing with the court and they are never just or truthful. I’m not saying this gentlemen didn’t do anything wrong but we also don’t know he did either

These are the drone OPERATORS that are going to make it even harder for any of us to fly anything. Now, i say operator, because any type of REAL pilot, would know better than to do this crap. He deserves the maximum punishment. Being an adult, and knowing the dangers of these actions, justify the harshest punishment.

When drones first came out, started to fly, they would fly over fences or to the roof of buildings and take pictures of women and girls sunbathing. they would then post the pictures to youtube or facebook. The husbands and fathers started shooting them. Law Enforcement told the fathers and husbands they LE couldn't do anything about it, talk to the FAA. guess what? that is where all these rules came from.

Oh yes, I'm sure real pilots know to not do that. In other news, I've had police helicopters flying no more than 50ft above my roof before on three occasions. Will they face prosecution? Nope.

@redryder6987 it wasn't a drone and it wasn't endangering an aircraft. Rules are different for real aircraft. Even if the rules were the same, it's the police...how many times u see them speeding down the highway with no emergency lights on? Do they get pulled over like me or you? No. It's a "Rules for thee, but not for me" situation. Noone holds the "watchmen" accountable.

@@SubZ3ro907 #1 I'm not sure exactly what it is that you are arguing about that I didn't already agree with. #2: it doesn't matter what it is or who is flying it the rules for "real aircraft" are no different than for drones which are also "real aircraft., "Endangering an aircraft" with a 500g toy made out of foam, some small bits of plastic and in larger models fragile composites that would barely put a few dents in the turbine blades of a modern turbojet is nothing in comparison to a 2-3 ton helicopter full of jet fuel doing donuts for half an hour over a bunch of houses while conducting an illegal search for whatever quota they need to make for the week. Further, at the height they are legally required to be operating aircraft at, they should have plenty of time to find a place to land after an impact that is quite literally nowhere near as bad as hitting a goose, a turkey, or even a crow. At 50ft? If a single bolt along the driveshaft of a helicopter or on the motor happens to get loose or fail, there is no hope of a crash landing, the pilot and all passengers will be dead as well as anyone on the ground unlucky enough to either be near or within the plume of burning jet fuel or who get hit with debris and shrapnel. It's also fun to remind people that they do actually test aircraft and aircraft components, including engines, for impacts with birds and other large debris. They shoot big, butterball turkeys out of a cannon at them. Nothing that a hobbyist flies will get anywhere near the weight or density of a butterball turkey. Worrying about situations that are extremely unlikely to happen, let alone cause little damage, is ridiculous when there are other more important issues which are far more dangerous.

It sounds to me like he WAS intentially flying near manned aircraft simply to get sensational videos to post on social media...at the risk of injury or even death. I say three years no time reduced for his plea!

I'm a new drone pilot and generally fly at 100 feet in a remote rural area. The potential for interacting with manned aircraft is not something I would have expected in a million years yet on my 6th or 7th flight I had to bring down my drone due to a low-flying sea plane skimming over the lake where I was practicing my flying. It's definitely something every drone pilot should expect to happen eventually and should be prepared for no matter where you fly.

i got low flying A-10 warthogs in my area. apparently my house is located on an air-force training path. i catch them flying with my eyes least 3 times a year. i dont fly drones much anymore. the batteries dont last long and they're not cheap.

I guess if you are flying your blimp, heli or gyrocopter and you see a drone that close, you don’t know what the operator’s intention is going to be, so I guess the fearing for your life is reasonable.

If the drone flies into the helicopter blade we all just laugh at the fitting karma. But the risk is that the drone flies into some turbine engine intakes; that is when little bits of metal shrapnel become a complete wildcard.

Nevertheless, the rotor motors will trash the engine. But yes, its better than losing yaw control. What many UAV people dont seem to realize is that every aircraft and every component of every aircraft has physical limitations. Windscreens have speed limitations generally below 10,000’ where it is more likely to strike large birds - the motors of the drones are harder than bird flesh so would penetrate the windscreen at a much lower speed. How would you like one or more of those motors coming through the windscreen at 250 knots (general speed restriction for aircraft below 10,000’ in U.S. airspace)? It could cause severe bodily injury or death of the stricken pilot. Then what of the people on the ground the may be killed or injured by the aircraft if it goes down. Most general aviation aircraft are single pilot including some jets. People need to realize the havoc they could cause!

my very first drone flight I encountered an air sea rescue chopper, being a complete novice I hit the return to home button only to watch in horror as my drone started climbing. I quicky realised my mistake and my pal with tons of experience guided me in lowering the drone and bringing it back, needless to say 2 yrs on I alter my rth to suit each flight!

As an RC flyer, you can see some of the issues within the drone community with some of the comments quasi defending this guy. He should be banged up for flying his drone at or near other aircraft, end of. Until you mob took to the sky, it was unheard of any RC issues. Now, thanks to the maverick drone flyers, we have CAA mandatory registration, 3 yearly examination and soon to be implemented Remote id.

I watched a few of the guy's videos on his RU-vid channel, including those featuring his young son. In one vid, the guy actually pushes the boy from behind making him fall into deep water in a pool. In another vid, he puts hot sauce on the boy's crackers, and the boy has to grab a drink and is in obvious distress. Kind of a jerk.

As a 40 year Commercial Pilot and CFI, CFI-I and a part 107 License holder, I think he should probably get the maximum sentence on all counts and be allowed to serve them consecutively. If it's just a monetary fine he will suffer little it would appear, and therefore he will learn nothing. There should probably be an additional charge of "CRIMINAL STUPIDITY".

Your personal history is of zero relevance here. Max sentences are for habitual offenders. Fines tend to be quite moving for offenders. He should be held accountable, but not to the max unless there is a valid reason. We have punishment ranges for good reason. The claim he will learn nothing from criminal charges and a fine is sketchy at best.

I tend to use the mannaed aircraft rules if I'm flying and a helicopter or light aircraft comes in the area, try and stay at least 1,000 feet away from them - horizontally of course! Although a low flying Hecules scared the living daylights out of me once... but I was only at about 100 feet.

I've had a military helicopter fly at 200ft altitude over my flying location, I heard it coming and landed my quadcopter immediately to avoid conflict

I am afraid of running into this some day. My house is near some power lines and the utility will randomly (2-3 times a year) fly a helicopter just over the top of the trees along the lines. It flies fairly fast and due to the trees, I have little chance of seeing it before it arrives at my location. So far, no issues. But, if I hear a helicopter, I head to the ground ASAP. All false alarms so far.

I use AIRMAP & other local restricted area maps sites before I fly. The only aircraft I had in my area was a hospital emergency evac helicopter, I set my drone down before it got to my drone, then I walked over to pick it up.

Yes the details not going through open court doesn't help us. We only have the plea to tell a story. The narrative they ate painting is that the drone pilot was flying towards the aircraft each time, so the distance was only kept 'safe' by the helicopter crew.

30mph=44 feet per second.... so 5 seconds to impact at 220 ft and closing... IMLTHO: That's Freakin hazardous if the drone was going 30mph! Only questions in my mind are whether "asshat" should be hyphenated and if so is it as-shat or ass-hat!

I agree no problem with the helicopter as long as pilot stays in one place and does not make any turns and the winds are zero and the drone does not drift into the helicopter. What are the changes of that happening? Odds are not in favor of the helicopter with dedicated rescuemen in it.

My problem with this as an American, is helicopters can fly at whatever altitude they want. They are not limited to the 500 feet agl that fixed wings are. I had a helicopter come over my property so low a few years ago the pilot damn near burned in avoiding my daytime bonfire. I called the FAA to complain and they told me what happened was fine.

The guy sounds a bit like an entitled jerk to me, it's people like this that have caused the toughening of regulations. I tend to nearly hit the deck as soon as I hear another aircraft, I get down as low as I can and if I can get back to the take off point safely I do so and land. What about the police drone that hit a landing aircraft. They just got a smack on the hand.

A few years back...I reported an idiot to the FAA....FSDO office in Belleville, MI. This drone pilot was flying his drone at night in Detroit and he was flying it close to the Detroit Marriot Renaissance Hotel and was filming people in the rooms. He then proceeded to fly the drone across the Detroit River and across an international border into Windsor, Canada and was flying it around a hotel over there on the waterfront.

All I want to do is pretty simple; fly my drone without government interference, regulation or any other such thing. I don't fly beyond my line of sight, not anywhere near airports, government buildings, or heck across busy streets. People that are like going out of their way to mess with other people, or airplanes, helicopters, etc deserve to get their hands slapped. All that a bigger drone gets me is a little further distance as I can see the size just a little bit easier.. Fairly sure that many others are no different than I am. I don't need someone or some official agency to tell me that I should not go peeking across the fence, peeking into bedrooms, or flying in air space that is not safe to do so. Morality and common sense guide me and others like me. I certainly don't appreciate RID and making it easier for the thugs in real life to take advantage of someone going out to have a bit of fun.

The people that are saying he is ruining for the rest are not actually grasping the situation, or how things work. Its like saying somebody in a car going 100mph hitting a wall "ruins it for the rest of the drivers". Absolutely zero sense.

In America there is a statute that says "Ignorance of the law is no excuse". In this case, with as much news that there has been and a flood of videos and information I cant see how that would apply but, just based on the information here I say throw away the key and lock this guy up. I am tired of people doing stupid and dangerous things that the rest of the world has to pay a price for. LOCK HIM UP.

Also... a normal human being would not behave in this manner. I bet he has mental/sociological issues or something. Doesn't change the fact that he materially put others at risk, tho. Luckily, most people are naturally cognizant of risks and care for others on a natural instinct level. There will always be defective humans, tho, who do things like this. And this happens throughout society, in all forms. Nothing new under the sun.

A few months ago I registered airspace for 3 hours. I was planning on spending a few battery packs. I took one flight and decided to wait a little bit because it was hot outside. My decision to wait was fortunate because the helicopter comes flying in lower than 300 ft carrying a crane section. I find it odd that one aircraft entering another aircraft airspace is a crime unless that aircraft is a manned aircraft and the other aircraft is a UAV. I feel that there is a void in protection of UAV airspace properly obtained through laanc.

Greetings from California. I reside in a agricultural area where crop dusters may be present at any time of the day, as well as Life Flight helicopters. If I'm flying my drone, and I can hear an aircraft in the area, I immediately ground my drone ASAP. There is nothing that important that can't wait until another time to fly.

Unmanned aircraft is the legal definition I think, altough you could argue this is more a helicopter than an aircraft. But maybe a helo is also defined as an aircraft. Who cares really.

The other drone that actually was struck by a cessna, was a police pilot and was flying in an airport restricted zone looking for a suspect. I don't think there was any federal prosecution? This was in canada as well? Is there another case you're talking about?

Because of people like this we all have to suffer. Been flying RC airplanes for over 50 years and prior to these gyro stabilized multi rotors we had no problems with government. Now we have flight regime restrictions, must be licensed, and now have to equip our aircraft with transponders. This is what happens when we lose respect for others, and do not think about or care about consequences of actions.

This was a great video and I can't wait to watch more. You give excellent explanations that make it easy for everyone to understand. In the video you replied to Brandon Wingerter. His comment is one made by sovereign citizens. It's not based on reality but their imagination. That argument has never worked in a court of law, ever! Everything they say is cherry-picked and/or a figment of their imagination. Basically they don't want to obey the law so they twist the wording or make up new wording to laws. It's the equivalent of a 5yo saying, "Nope" or "It wasn't me." I'm surprised they don't blame everything on the one armed man. 😆 The best is when they try to say that they are traveling and not driving. They think that if they are not driving for profit then they are traveling and thus don't require a driver's license. If that was true, then why would there be a commercial driver's license. Also, the federal government established the 10th amendment to allow each state to regulate driving privileges. They always like to overlook that part. That's because it goes against their narrative.

I think about all the flash shop lifting by ganga etc. Also, I think California has even made it a law that people can shop lift without facing a penalty if it is less than a shopping cart full. So, people walk out with shopping carts full all the time now.

Anyone that flys unsafe like this guy should not be allowed to own another drone. Hell I run from birds like yesterday over my house. I live about two miles from a huge lake in SC I had my drone up about 100 feet and here comes a large gull right at the drone. I hit the stick and dropped the drone quickly. The gull moved on. Drones can be dangerous in the hands of a fool.

I usually fly my drone above my garden, just some altitude videos of sunrises and sunsets, all within the legal height limit. Before I do, I check my DJI Fly app for any low flying aircraft warnings in the vicinity. I also look up at the sky as well. If there are no low flyers then I'm good to go. If there are, the drone stays on the ground.

SoCal is the busiest airspace in the country. Lots of aircraft flying at low level over the coast for sure. All drones need to be operated by licensed operators.

We fly near a hospital with a very active helipad. It's our policy for everyone to hit the deck if we even hear a helicopter. This is no game... those copters come in low and fast.
