Coming back to brush up and I just want to say that your library of tutorial videos is basically like a modern library of alexandria. What a treasure trove of information for this sim. Thank you for your work over the years.
I teach pilots the F/A-18 and F-14. sometimes they ask for others like the 16, a mig ect. and i have flown many others but by no means am an expert. when I teach them and thier in these odd planes i use grim constantly for info. And after spending the month or so with the student i always feel off returning to my bird. These refreshers are phenominal.
Wow, I started this too late tonight. I went brain dead after 20 mins, I'll have to make it a 3 part series. Thanks for being so thorough, I've learned nearly everything about the F18 from you.
Cap - I am brand new to DCS and the F18 (obviously). I've been following your training series on it and in 2021 it is still relevant, concise and a huge help. We all have our critics - but your videos are extremely helpful and I appreciate the huge amount of time and effort you clearly have invested to make this series. Back to binge watching... keep it up.
Awesome! A solid hour of Hornet tutorials regarding the SA page, datalink, and iff! I've been scouring the internet for exactly this type of in depth and up to date video. Thank you so much, cap!
Seriously dude without you I would have never been able to learn the F-18 in DCS World. Wags isn't nearly as thorough and doesn't always break things down in layman's terms. thanks for the work you do man. I've learned almost every other function of the F-18 up to now except IFF and D/L.....I have been dreading the eventual need to learn it but your video made it easy. Thanks again
So I'm new to this and maybe wrong, but I think the explanation about the RWR at 31:45 is backwards. It seems to say that if the threat is closer to the center of the RWR, it is a greater threat. As I understand it from the manual, the further the threat is from the center, the greater the threat. Please correct me if I'm wrong. That being said, I really love this video and all the Grim Reapers tutorials on the FA-18 simulation. Because of you guys, I may actually be able to learn this thing!
Very informative video. 👍🏼 I have tried to IFF interrogate a target according to the steps. However, once the SCS Depress button is pressed, the target remains ambiguous, tried on another target, HAFU didn't change at all, and remains ambiguous. Why was that? P.S. I have AWACS enabled. LTWS boxed.
I have no idea why the SCS depress interrogation doesn't seem to do anything now, I'm having the same thing. Currently the IFF doesn't display "on" when you enable it, it has AI and XP modes when you hit the IFF button, whatever they are, neither of which seem to matter for interrogating manually. The automatic interrogation system at least does the job, you enable it on the AZ/EL screen labelled "AUTO INT" just below L+S INT which used to enable SCS depress manual but clearly doesnt now.
So that means aircraft like the Su27 and F15 have it very easy to identify bcs its either friend or foe and either of identifications is always correct
Hey Cap, this is a very nice video - but the F-14 didn't have an Intel chip on board ;) It was an AMI MP944, which is a remarkable chip in that it was actually the world's first integrated microprocessor! FYI: firstmicroprocessor.com/ *EDIT*: Actually my bad: the AWG-9 indeed had an Intel 8088 specifically, I thought I remembered that was in the updated AN/APG-71 :D Please carry on :D
I've probably spent 5hrs on this, when I sensor control depress over a target, nothing happens. OK. When I lock it up with an an STT and sensor control depress over it, absolutely nothing happens. I can get staples to go to arcs (tanker) but hostiles never IFF. Im in RWS mode and NCTR is boxed. It's driving me mad! Is it strictly to do with aspect? Even with NCTR I can never get anything to show other than a yellow staple unless an AWACS is airborne....
@@coreyfaehrmann1580 I haven't, and instead decided to take a break on the F18 until Supercarrier came out (soon as of 5/15/2020) so I will revisit then. I am having a lot of fun with my old A10 module, so much more complete and the systems are much more straightforward than the F18C and it's finicky radar. If i figure out what I was doing wrong I'll add it here for future generations lol.
@@Tailspin07 Did you turn on your IFF on the UFC’s? When you are trying to interrogate the transponder with sensor select depress......it has NOTHING to do with aspect. That is only NCTR.
If you are in a warzone what is to say that the enemy doesnt use your IFF to trick you? What can stop that from happening? Like what would stop you from using enemy IFF when going into some hostile airspace?
Oh ok, that might work but there is always a work around. Hey very in depth videos by the way. A lot of work involved. My compliments to you sir. I didnt take you seriously at first (your hyped up almost childish enthusiasm at a star wars cruised being fired on and fleet wars and rockets all over the place and what would seem like a grown man jumping up and down cheering it on) great videos. Maybe make some cinematics in the same fashion.
Damn now I need to go through the radar video again to get to how to do a STT. (EDIT - Answer RWS mode, tdc depress) thanks for this though cap slightly less opaque.
I got gifted the F-18 for my birthday, and Im having a hard time understanding Datalink and the SA page, sometimes its full of contacts and sometimes I cant see anything on it, I dont know what Im doing wrong.
Is this a tutorial video or it's Scorcese's "Irishman"? :)) Cap i'm just kiddin'.You do an excellent work on the tutorials but I actually wonder how can one remember all of these things.
Awesome explanation of the system! I have been waiting for this especially after a couple of teammates accidentally shot me down during a training mission!
I like your training vids simply because you're efficient in getting to the point without getting distracted. That is a skill in itself as these birds systems are so interconnected.
I don’t understand. I lock the target that I know is a enemy with my aim 120. It says “IN LAR” and therefor it won’t let me shoot. I don’t know how to fix this or if I’m doing something wrong?
50:30 "this guy is now visible for what ever reason but not the others" would that be the data link. He is telling the AWACS via link that he is friendly not via AWACS radar.
Cap... Great tutorial... But I'm having an issue???.... In multiplayer when I click on iff and Data link. I get disconnected from Server and got to start back from beginning meaning firing up DCS WORLD 2.5 again it's very annoying...
@@grimreapers Cap it's ok I wasn't related it to... I was seeing if you know what I would cause this issue??? Your the man with all the answers my friend...
Great info. It's unfortunate that you have to compress all that information into a 1-hour video. Technology is a wonderful thing, but it takes dozens of hours to smoothly use such complicated and interlinked systems smoothly. Hopefully this will help some noobs be better DCS'ers. Thanks Cap. Good job.
Question: to IFF hostiles you need two factors: 2 onboard (Mode 4 + NCTR) or one onboard and one offboard. What about two offboard? e.g. AWACS and friendly fighter, would that be sufficient? Many thanks.
Lots of info for a newbie. Assumes knowing some previous info but I still got a lot out of it. Not too confusing cause I realize there is a lot of info here.
Good morning I know this is a older video but I’m new and learning the f18 radar system starting tomorrow. My question is that is this working in the stable version 2.5.5? Or is it only on the open beta? I’ve been at coming on 3 months now and I’m starting to think that the open beta is what I need to be playing/training on. Thx for any help.
Hey it's one year late but I had to answer this. it means "their HAFU status is ambiguous". not "they are HAFU, therefore ambiguous". So what he wrote is correct. the equals symbol is the confusing thing there. let me give you another example using another object in the same form: My car = red. or Their house = big.
38:20 have they changed the process for NCTR IFF? It will work for me on the L&S target while using LTWS, but have not been able to do it the normal way using STT.
@@grimreapers Couldn't find it in manual. You, Wags, and Chucks guide all give the same steps which I think I'm following but it won't work for me :/ Can you check see if it still works for you? Never been stumped so hard before in DCS and I'm starting to think it may have gotten bugged or something. Edit: Also noticing if LTWS is turned and the target is within 25mi it will identify red straight away without a two step check. Assuming that is a bug.
Wonderful tutorial, thanks Cap! Also, at 46:00, the IFF interrogation on the right display switches the target to red - isn't that screen supposed to be green/black only?
@@grimreapers Really nice, never noticed that before, thanks! Just wondering whether this is realistic or a concession towards player convenience though.
Hey Cap if u can a little help so I made a quick mission in the mission editor 1V1 BVR me in the 18 vs an enemy AI 29 we are 40mi away coming directly at each other at co altitude 25000ft I turn off LTWS and mode 4 the 29 inside 20 miles I’ve tried with an without a radar lock and there’s no way the NCTR isn’t working because I’m flying so precisely to him that if we keep going to the merge I would put my nose in his front air intakes and I’ve made sure the 29 is on the opposite team as well
lionreza Thanks! I just went to the advanced waypoint actions looking for an "ROE", and couldn't find one. None of the tasks, or conditions provided an option for "return fire only". Any further suggestions?
@@grimreapers yes, I tried it on your mission too. The friendlies don't give a response. IFF works fine with an STT lock, I'm guessing that's NCTR + offboard. Could you confirm?
When I click the mission link I get - "F-14B Planning Tool.ods" as the download??? Am I doing something wrong or is it pointing to the wrong download file?
Thx for the tutorial cap, been starting to learn the f18 from your video. However if my wingman and i both use the mode 4 radar to scan the unknown plane, will it identify the unknown?
You speak too fast, thanks to think to the ones that are not fluent english, especially since there are no manuals updates. A summary or a check list + explanations would help. Thanks
I'm a genius (although I keep that well hidden) but even MY brain is thumping after this. I wonder how long real F/A-18C jockeys took to master all of this. Fantastic instructional video! I have become a Grim Reapers tutorial vid junkie now.
This has just got me thinking. What about introducing civilian aircraft you can have flight paths to avoid and combat zones and Sam sites can cause international incidents. Also airports could have you on hold while jet liners land. Probably a nightmare to engineer but would be cool. Imagine sharing a map with regular civilian pilots online mixed with combat missions
Dude. That would be awesome. The maps would need to be huge though to have multiple combat zones and civilian zones but wow that would add so many more layers.
