FAAQ - Student Grade vs. Artist Grade Paint - What's the Difference?

I’m going to TRY and keep this nice and simple. When dealing with artist grade paint over student grade paint, you hear a lot about fillers, pigment levels, quality, etc. But what does that really mean? What am I really paying for when I get an artist grade paint over a student grade? Let’s leave all the fancy pants marketing aside, and look at how the paint actually performs side by side. Simple enough, right?

Tip guys - when it comes to a few colors - SPEND THE MONEY. Your titanium white - buy the best you can afford in the biggest amount you can afford because you are going to be mixing other colors with it and the titanium is going to determine to a large extent how the rest of them age. If you get a student grade prussian blue and mix it with a bit of really good titanium white, you've extended the life and lightfastness of that color exponentially. Titanium White, Ivory Black, Cadmium Red, Cobalt/Ultramarine Blue, Permanent Yellow, Quinacridone Mag/Crimson - spend the money on these and just blend away with everything else.

Look the most thing that concerns me and bugs me is the claim that the student grade oil colors will change with time, and that is all what I care about, so please answer me because I've searched the whole internet for a final answer

Now if only we could get all of the companies to list actual lightfast ratings on their products...hint hint SoHo. 😉 Maybe A.S.S can tackle that subject next...lol 😆

Wish paint makers had to list the percentage of pigment in their paints. Would make it much easier to make a decision on what to buy.

And change the term as well... Like other products.. Something like Primary grade instead of students grade.

Interesting, mixing 50/50 blue/white of artist grade vs student grade should give the same colour . As the both the white and blue should both have more pigment. Seems the artist grade white isn't as pigmented as it only took half the blue? So the blue is worth the money but maybe not the white.

Thank you, thank you. That's the first explanation I've heard that actually makes sense!

Most professional artists I know use both grades and I know I do. For colours like Yellow Ochre, Prussian Blue, Pthalo Green , light Red, I find Winton paints perfectly adequate and I even find the artist quality too strong. Cadmiums though cant be matched in the student grade. Paints like Winton use cheaper pigments or more modern dye type colours to produce the hue but that doesn't always make them inferior or less lightfast. At the end of the day the student or artist grade now are probably far superior to some of fugitive rubbish they used 200 years ago that produced all those masterpieces..

I've found when I'm painting and using a lot of paint SoHo paint works fine but on most all my other work its 80% Golden paint and the rest other brands like Liquitex or Matisse. Golden seems to be the best paint I've used over the years for consistency, long lasting, richness in color and effects that I'm not finding in other brands.

Oh, watercolors are my JAM. (I don't know who still says that. Apparently, me.) Although many of the same principles apply across all paints, there will almost definitely be videos on watercolor in the future.

Of course I buy all my paint from Jerry's in Raleigh NC, I currently use Lukas Cryl Studio, when I first started using it an employee told me it was artist quality, yesterday I went in to restock on paint, a different employee that has helped me many times said they were told that the Lukas Cryl Studio was student grade. I was really bummed out because I've bought every nearly color that Jerry's has to offer in the 500ml bottles at least 2 or 3 times and I really like this paint. (I use lots of paint in my abstracts) Now I'm torn, am I buying crapy paint? I'm not a professional artist, and I'm not super wealthy but I do have a healthy budget for my art supplies and I want to start selling my artwork. I can't find much literature online about Lukas Cryl Studio, but the Jerry's employee did show me a different Lukas Cryl thats more expensive. Can anyone verify the quality of the Lukas Cryl Studio for me??? Thanks

OK, my friend, let me tell you with authority- I used to work over at Lukas in Dusseldorf, Germany many moons ago. Lukas makes 3 grades of paint. NOT just two like most paint manufacturers. This is the cause of some of the confusion. Their student grade paint is called Terzia (don't ask me how to pronounce that), their artist grade paint is the Studio, and the third tier is their professional/impasto style paint is called Pastos (or 1862 for watercolor and oil). The paints you bought are what I would consider an artist quality. They probably have hues in place of real cadmiums and cobalts, but that does not make them student grade. Watch my FAAQ- What are Hue? for a bit more on that. I hope this helps!
