I like this pattern so much because it has an elastic band and doesn't involve hook and loop! I think that's so much better! Many thanks for sharing it.

Great crown I’ve seen so far. Prefer the covered elastic than the ribbons I’ve seen online . Please can you assist my calculations to make one for an adult. I have a crown template, but I’m wondering how do I work out how much elastic and pieces of fabric to cover it at the back to use for the adult? Any help would be appreciated.

More than happy to help. Would you mind letting me know how long your finished crown piece will be once the seams at the ends are tucked in, and what size head/s you're making them for?

Thank you! The template I have is to be cut on the fold. It has 3 crown ‘spikes’ It is 10 and one quarter inches long, not sure how much to tuck in it doesn’t mark how much to turn in. My relatives head measurement is 55cm. I haven’t spare fabric to ‘test’ it out. So nervous about using the fabric I ordered. Just wondering does your pattern accommodate for my relative’s measurements? Thank you for reaching out. Appreciate it. Need to make it for 17.11.2023

Hey@@SB-km5yp - If you use our 12-36 month size which is 18" (46 cm) long minus 3/8" (1cm) on either end to turn in, that will give you a crown length of 17 1/3" (44 cm). If your relative's head is 21 3/4" (55cm), then I would cut the elastic at 4 1/3" (11cm) (includes 3/8" (1cm) to sew in each side). This should be a comfortable amount of stretch to wear. Then I'd cut the casing the same height as our pattern, but the length should be around 6 1/3" (16cm).

Quick question! I’ve always been told to do a zig zag stitch for elastic. My projects haven’t always worked with this method. I noticed you did a straight stitch on the elastic why not a zig zag?

Hey Bianca, when sewing elastic pieces together, it's best to opt for a zigzag or stretch stitch instead of a straight stitch. The zigzag stitch helps enclose edges and allows the fabric to stretch without risking thread breakage, ensuring a more durable and flexible seam. Using a straight stitch may lead to thread snapping when the elastic stretches. However, the elastic on the crown is just there for a snug fit on the head and isn't under a lot of stress, so I believe using a straight stitch is fine in this case. Plus, the elastic is stitched in the casing, then stitched again to the crown so it's pretty secure (and looks much nicer than a zigzag stitch on the final piece!) Hope that helps!
