Faceplate on my big lathe (D1-6 mount) - first use.

The faceplate was missing from my old 460mm (18") swing lathe, but a couple of years ago I was able to get a suitable substitute. The 250mm chucks are usually big enough for my projects but a job has finally popped up that needs the faceplate. This is its first outing.
NB: this video is mostly for my future reminiscences - not really much to see here.

Good Job Alan, the Hole Saw wasn't happy, you need a set of Annular Cutters mate.

Annular cutters would have been perfect for this job but I only have a small set ~14 -24mm. Sadly, the larger sizes are very expensive eg 60mm ~$150 and I can't justify that cost for my very occasional use. I was a bit surprised that the hole saw did so poorly as I have used hole saws in this way before with no problem: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2oGaQTjMz68.html Anyway, thanks for your comment.

@@alanshomeworkshop I love them, mine are all non metric, up to 2'' i got them cheap, they sure do get a good hole to start with, but you're right, good Hole Saws work well as well.

Alan your a braver man than I am taking it up to 400rpm those cast iron weights are usually made from the dregs and left overs and contain slag and other impurities making for inconsistent material density never mind the poor quality of the moulds given that it's only real function is to be heavy and some what round The potential for it to explode would have made me go to the milling machine and bore it out on there instead
@alanshomeworkshop

Well I did consider the possibility of such an issue, but naively thought 400rpm would be ok. However, I'll take note of your advice and use the milling machine if there is a next time. Thanks for your comment.

They're actually a lot stronger then you give credit, they're made to be dropped and banged around.
@TheConkulator
@TheConkulator Год назад
@@65cj55 yeah dropped and banged around is one thing being spun is a whole other thing go have a look at fly wheels exploding and the damage they do by all means 400rpm isn't a lot but it's also not a high quality casting or forged balanced and precision machined peice of equipment
@TheConkulator
@TheConkulator Год назад
@@alanshomeworkshop I don't know if you have seen the aftermath of fly wheels exploding obviously it's not spinning at stupidly high rpm but still having it clamped down and that the clamps where putting a side load onto it increased the potential danger similar to using the side of a grinding wheel At least in the mill you can spin the tool at the right rpm to make a good clean cut with no risk of a catastrophic failure Im a safety 3rd kinda person oh&s gets in the way of progress but I'd hate to see or hear of you getting hurt or seriously injured

@@TheConkulator They're ample strong enough, likely just as strong as the Faceplate.
