Please read my comprehensive blog post all about gua sha: thecuriouscoco...
Use this video as a starting point to empower you to find your body's own BEST facial gua sha technique. There is no one single correct way to do facial gua sha, just like there is no single correct way to dance or cook a chicken. Don't be shy to experiment with what feels the best on your skin and what brings you the most dramatic results you're looking for. I began this practice after my acupuncturist told me it would help my eye health. I absolutely fell in love with making it a non-negotiable part of my daily skincare regimen.
My current favorite non-toxic and high performance products to use to prep my skin for gua sha:
1. cleanser - I either use a konjac sponge (amzn.to/2WTz2Mv), the 5YINA Divine Bio-Adaptive Cleanser (thecuriouscoco...) or the Beautycounter Lotus Glow Cleansing Balm (thecuriouscoco...)
2. prep - either the Beautycounter Countertime Mineral Boost Hydrating Essence (thecuriouscoco...) or the 5YINA Quiescent Hydrolat (thecuriouscoco...)
3. treatment - either Beautycounter's Intense Moisture Serum (thecuriouscoco...) or Beautycounter Countertime Tripeptide Radiance Serum, which specifically targets vertical lines (thecuriouscoco...)
4. moisturize - Beautycounter Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion (thecuriouscoco...) or Beautycounter Countertime Antioxidant Soft Cream (thecuriouscoco...)
5. facial oil - 5YINA Quiescent Beauty Oil (thecuriouscoco...) but I also use the Beautycounter oils on other days (thecuriouscoco...)
I'm happy to help you find the perfect skincare products for YOUR unique skin type, just fill out my skincare consultation: thecuriouscoco...
Listen to my interview on Rebel Heart Radio about gua sha to learn even more: www.rebelheart...
GUA SHA STONES:
If you want to really target lines and wrinkles, I suggest the Primally Pure gua sha stone, which has a comb edge that is used to buff out lines to reduce their appearance. Use my coupon code CURIOUS for 10% off your first order thecuriouscoco...
This is an affordable 3-piece set on Amazon, I have a video that shows how to use these 3 together: amzn.to/2WDqudn

Jennifer Avina I do too. I have found that using a night guard mouthpiece helped a great deal with the pressure. However it was due to an invisible and undiagnosed nasal polyp. Clearly removing it was part of the healing process. But the mouth guard works on that mouth tension.

I'm impressed. I see how quickly your muscles relaxed and the change in direction of how those muscles were pulling. It definitely "lifted" your face giving a more youthful look. As a massage therapist I was never tempted to try this tool until I watched your video. I really appreciate your passion for experimenting with it. You're a natural massage therapist as you seem very in tune with your body. And you actually bother to go home after acupuncture and continue therapy for your eye strain. Clients like you are a God send. I also really like how you are inspiring others to take care of themselves. Better to do it for a minute 7 days a week than 10 minutes all in one shot. It's true about massage, some days you can go on forever and other days your body doesn't want a long massage. Great advice. Thanks for the tip on intensity. Making sure the H tool is in my cart!! 😁 great video!👍

A very accurate video. It’s actually how my grandma do guasha on me back in China. I recommend to guasha the part between your eyes and eyebrows, as well as the back of your neck. It really helps you to relieve stress

from a lymph drain perspective you should start from forehead, mid face, chin/jaw, last ear/neck downward. If you sweep your house randomly you may leave trash behind, but it you start from inside the house and out toward the door...also you don't need to purchase tools, use warm hands, fingers, knuckles.

I started to do this in some parts of my face some months ago to give my jawline more definition and help with the little fine lines I was getting on my forehead since I'm just 24 ugh. And it does work very well, now I'm about to implement this I call it massage to my night or morning routine but for all my face, this video helped me a lot, thank you, you explained everything very well :)

So, I just started doing it with my fingers during the video and I completely understand what you meant when you said you could feel the lymph moving! I'm doing it along my jaw and behind my ears and all of a sudden I could feel this warm sensation around that area. It was so cool, lol.

I had lymphatic drainage massage for many years when I was need bound with m.e. it helped a lot, I recognize a lot of your movements especially on the face. I was advised to swap my metal piercings for plastic as I had a lip & nose ring plus multiple earrings. She pin pointed my most blocked areas and they related to where I had the metal. Once I swapped everything lymph moved much more freely. I just noticed your earrings and thought I would just share this. Lovely video. I will buy some.

OMG~ I Love what you have demonstrated as well as the anatomical & basic neurological information. I'd love even more of that 'education' in future videos, if you don't mind. I have a neurological disease (similar to MS) that has also left me with Bells palsy, and at age 66 I'm dead keen to help with the aging, wrinkles and the dullness of my facial skin. I also experience light headaches due to eye strain so I can't wait to try this!! I am a believer in Chinese medicine, especial considering the thousands of years that their culture has been going and the health and longevity of especially the peasants working in the fields have achieved this without western medicine. I guess if we in the west hadn't tossed out all of the 'old wives tales' out with the increase of 'education' perhaps we would also be more accepting of what appears to be unusual forms of medicine but, if one looks at them from a scientific viewpoint and open mind, we might have integrated the eastern medicine with western medicine. Sorry if I haven't made myself clear, but I'm extremely tired atm. Thanks for your video and I am looking forward to binging on the rest of your uploads! :)

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, Wendy. I used to be very dogmatic about Western medicine and looked down upon Eastern thought and medicine, but it took a complete health crash and no help from MDs for me to change my tune. Chinese medicine saved my life, no exaggeration. It's encouraging that more and more high quality scientific evidence is piling up in support of TCM practices and treatments, and I do my best to be a good ambassador since I do have a background in hard science and research. Thanks again and glad this helped you!

Hello! I accidentally stumbled upon your video as it started playing “next up” It caught my attention immediately because I’m aware of the technique with the tiger balm because One of my best Childhood Friends Is Thai...her mom would do this to her dad who had pain from factory work. I don’t know it had a name but I was immediately intrigued by you. Anyways long story short, I have autoimmune issues, Lyme, lupus, RA, Sjögren’s etc and I have a hell of a time with my lymphatic system and I have issues from long term prednisone use. So it was definitely kismet that your video started playing randomly. I have tried all kinds of stuff for Pain relief but never heard of this and it looks very interesting and I can’t wait to try it. So thank you for taking the time to make such a video and your intro was extremely informative and I appreciate All the information and background. I have so much muscular pain in my face from TMJ and fibromyalgia and all my other issues but especially Tension in my neck and head that give me migraines. @@kellywood4886 This is a very wonderful facial massage process for pain. But totally wrong for lymph. Only a LIGHT touch will get the lymph to flow! Too much pressure will only COLLAPSE the tiny vessels! That's why we do very light strokes along the pathways. Learn the pathways. And manyy of us do the dry brush process. Please find some better videos on lymph drainage, there are many out there. I'm all about getting serious about lymph health, not just looking at a few superficial videos. Health is too important for superficial interest. Get deep into the study. It's your PRECIOUS LIFE we're talking about Dear One!

First time hearing about this beauty process with "board". Seems rough for mature skin though (over 70). Would be afraid of stretching skin. Have been doing a rough form of this for years just with finger stroking, etc. all over face. Definitely makes difference for me and I have been aware of puffy skin being diminished by what I do, slimming my face. My face tends to look "doughy" unless I exercise a lot which is what worked for me most of my life. A lot means at least an hour on bike plus weights. Also do yoga which can make big difference. Now I don't exercise very much but Your video explains why my facial "massage" is also working somewhat for me with what I do although not exercising. Probably providing some lymph drainage. Now I know more precisely what exact direction these finger strokes should go. And this has been tremendously helpful. Thank you for this wonderful and informative video!

I imagine at least a third of the people watching this video would have turned it off if you hadn't mentioned your career. As you know people have been teaching Chinese medicine online for along time and most people automatically discount it because it was not what we are taught in the US. Anyone who crosses over into Eastern medicine are looked at as being on the fringe. This video was great. You have Beautiful skin and I am glad you are brave enough to share what is outside of western traditions. I have used these tools before and they move congested lymph but also make blood rush to the area to create a great feeling. Just found you today. I will subscribe.

Thank you for this clip, Amanda! I got a combo Jade Roller and Gua Sha kit at Ross, and have been using the Jade Roller (had a diagram for that) but needed more instruction - this was great! My co-worker has done Gua Sha in my back during massage trades, t'was fun to learn this routine. I've been using the Andalou line of facial products, and used the day cream with the Jade roller after my session.

Wow! A Scientist that believes in meditation, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, etc.. I have a son for you (Molecular Cell Bio) if you're not married?! I started doing energy medicine exercises (Meridian triple warmer stuff) the taps on the sinuses, under the collar bone, the center of the chest and spreading your fingers on the forehead down your to your neck, etc. This seems like a great addition for my 53 yr old skin!!!

Haha I know I am a rare breed, although my influence is helping to broaden the perspective of other scientists and laypeople alike. It took a complete and utter failure from Western medicine during an autoimmune health crash for me to embrace other options. Chinese medicine truly saved my life, and the more I dig into it the more it makes so much sense. P.S. I am happily married but flattered

Cindy, you may also be interested in a gentleman named Jerry Tennant. Not to buy his doo-hickey, but his book "Healing is Voltage." He connects the accupuncture meridians with electrical current flow in the body. Tons of videos on YT.

@@boadiceameridionalis3732 Thank you so much!! I have been watching videos from Donna Eden which are not very long or involved. And I also watch Dr Joe Dispenza & Greg Braden but they're more philosophical. But I looked up Dr Tennant and found some great YT videos and a Gaia segment (so I can use my subscription!), I will eat them up asap. Thanks for taking the time to share with me, it means a great deal!

Amanda, I am a licensed acupuncturist and I would like to say that perhaps you want to be slightly gentler. Gua sha is generally a technique for removing excesses and the face is a delicate area. Thank you for your enthusiasm for Chinese medicine. It has much to offer to many.

Hi Connie, thanks for commenting. My technique has improved tremendously since this video....I have other, newer technique videos. That said I have always been very careful and advise others to do the same. My skin has only continued to improve (as have the symptoms I was originally experiencing which prompted my acupuncturist to prescribe facial gua sha) as I have continued to do this (almost) daily.

I wouldn't use a metal spoon, I would us a ceramic soup spoon (like what is served with soup at Chinese restaurants). I am actually going to do a video on how to use a ceramic spoon! That is how I started doing gua sha many years ago.

This was very helpful. At work, my eye strain is also aggravated by severe red eye which we all believe is tied to poor air filtration/ lack of windows and old carpeting. I have to use drops every day, sometimes several times during the 8 hours. At home with 3 cats inside the house AND their litterboxes, I need nothing. lol. I've been interested in trying these tools out and enjoyed your description and demonstration. Thanks!
