Facing the Fat: 55 Days Without Food | ENDEVR Documentary
Watch 'Opioid Tragedy: Inside the Fentanyl Crisis' here: • Opioid Tragedy: Inside...
Kenny Saylors, after years of being healthy and athletic, became severely overweight and after trying various diets decided to do something drastic about it. With the support of his Doctor, he decided to stop eating for 55 days, drinking only water.
Facing the Fat documents his journey, from the realisation that he had a physical and mental addiction to the chemicals in junk food, to the detox and repair that his body goes through during this record-breaking fast. It also looks at the wider implications of over-eating for the individual, society and the world at large.
Obesity has become one of the most overwhelming diseases in modern society costing American taxpayers $99 billion every year, while the number of overweight people has surpassed the number of people suffering from malnutrition by 200 million.
Facing the Fat presents an entertaining and inspiring challenge but also makes the serious point, that obesity is not just a personal struggle, but one that has far reaching implications for us all.

When I was 49 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I decided to fast, against doctors advice. It's my life and my body. I fasted for 37 days, I wasn't overweight, maybe 10lbs. Over the 37 days I lost 24 lbs but there was no sign of the cancer. I'm now 73, still cancer free and healthy with no medications. During lockdown I gained 15lbs, maybe comfort eating through stress. On 1st January this year I started the January carnivore challenge. Today is 6th January and I've lost 6lbs. I'm going to fast on each Sunday in January too. Hopefully the excess 15lb will be gone by the 31st.

Excellent! Thanks for sharing. I lost 48 lbs since May of 2021. I've gained about 3-4 lbs of it back, but weigh myself every morning to stay on track. I try to do paleo and intermittent fasting 16-17 hours a day. I think the IF really helps a lot. I have come to love avocados. 🥑

As a teenager I got eczema so bad, that for 2 years I turned to a walking zombie - 100% of my skin was constantly inflamed, red, itchy, oozing smelly stuff and whole chunks were peeling off as the skin was going through these cycles. I ended up in ER overdosed, eating like 4-5 zyrtecs a day, I was given hydroccortizone intravenously twice a week for over a year. Things got so bad, I was so desperate and just stopped everything one day: stopped eating, stopped taking all the meds, just drank water for 14 days. In those two weeks my skin healed, the inflammation subsided, within two months one could not tell I had ever any eczema. That’s my experience with fasting ❤

I had skin problems on my elbows. When I got retired, 3 years ago, I started to eat more vegetables to loose weight and to detox my body. Since then, I eat often oat. One or two times per day I eat oat. 60 gramms. With nature joghurt and a few berries. 6-8 berries. To the oat I add two table spoons linesead oil, and a teaspoon cinamon. I lost 10kg in two years. My doctor was surprised about the values in my blood. I had also to take pills against high blood pressure before, now I dont need them any more. About the vegetables: I eat a lot of broccoli, even to my breakfast. In my garden I am growing also veggies. Aubergines, tomatos, salads, peperoni/paprika, lettice. Today I can say: You are what you eat. Try to cut down the carbs, eat two times fish per week. Saumon, baked. All my skin problems are gone, also on the elbows.

by far the hardest part of fasting is the boredom. If you've never done a multiday fast, you have no idea the enormous amount of your daily time is spent thinking about, preparing, or eating food. Depending on your lifestyle, it can be really hard to fill all that extra free time. If you want a fast to be easy, start it when you are very busy

Very well done! The record for water-only fasting is 392 days by Angus Barbieri of England in 1965-66 (6/14/1965 to 7/11/1966). Guinness Record Books no longer recognizes fasting records due to safety returns. He weighed 415 pounds to start and ended up at 180. He kept the weight off but died at age 50. @tortureyou
@tortureyou 6 месяцев назад
@@coreyworthingtonii9230 no, it is based more on the elasticity of your skin before the weight loss. The only thing that will reduce the surface area of the skin other than surgery is skin contraction. Age, genetics, elasticty, etc is the only factors that determine how much extra skin will be remaining once the surface area of your body is reduced.

If you are hoping to lose weight FAST, not eating is a BAD IDEA. Your body will enter starvation mode and you will end up losing muscle which will make rebound and gain weight like crazy! You need to eat a lot less, maybe 800 calories or so a day, and do lots of cardo and a bit of bodyweight exercise like squats and push ups (against a table). This WILL deliver your results I promise. It's actually harder than totally fasting because when you fast the pain actually goes away after a couple days 😉. Drink plenty of fluids, its key to getting rid of fat. You need to feather your body along that fine line between starvation mode and weight loss. Finally, you can gain muscle while losing weight but only about 70% of your theoretical max, but if you aren't hardcore pumping iron you won't come close to that max anyway. You really do want to gain a bit of muscle though as it increases you BMR so your burn more calories while you sleep or work in an office. What I would suggest is doing a 48 hour fast as this makes hitting that 800 to 1200 calorie target so much easier! from Hopefully this helps some of you 😊

It's not that wild when you think about it, we have been programmed and misled, plain and simple. Lipitor is a cholesterol lowering medication.

Not the last 100 years. You are thinking about the hunting and gathering period, which is way before civilisation a few thousand years ago. I doubt humans even went without food for long stretches then. Animals are good at finding food, and we were no different. We are fat now because of junk food, sugar and little exercise, not because we are eating when hungry.

Intermittent fasting is probably perfectly normal for our biology, but fat is not efficient at storing protein, potassium or many other vital nutrients. Even if you're as large as this guy, cutting all sources of nutrition for extended periods runs the risk of damaging muscles vital to your heart and lung function. IE, it can kill you. Energy isn't the only thing we get from food and it's not the only thing we need, but it's just about all you'll get from fat.

@@maskeno Most people that fast for extended periods of time, include electrolytes. You should absolutely not do extended fasts (more than say around 14 days) on just distilled water or even mineral water imo. Even when I do 7 to 10 day fasts, I include some electrolytes. The record for extremely low calorie, no sugar, mostly liquid fasting (he did eat a little dried yeast) was for 382 "official" days (according to the medical folks supervising him) where he lost 276 lbs. (He kept the huge majority of that weight off. He reached 180lbs and then stabilized to 196, a chunk of which was most assuredly water and muscle weight). Granted, he died at age 50/51, but he was so morbidly obese for such a large chunk of his life, that the damage to his body had already been done. Fasting is not what killed him longer term, but most likely prolonged his life. When he started the fast, he weighed 456lbs at age 27. (His name btw was Angus Barbieri, from Scotland).

When I did a 30 day water fast I lost weight way faster than this gentlemen. I was losing 2-4lbs per day. I went from 300lbs to 217 at the end of the fast. That is normal for someone in ketosis. The body makes some extra glucose through gluconeogenesis. It is probably the normal blood glucose for humans in absence of insulin. Problem is, we think < 80 is normal as that is measured on healthy people eating a “balanced diet” (including carbs), so it is not measured at low insulin levels. Example: my morning glucose on a balanced omnivorous diet or vegan diet (I tried all of them for experimentation) is 75-85. Otoh, on a carnivore diet or keto, or in starvation, it is between 100 and 110.

I did my first seven-day fast when I was 18. Since then I've done countless water fasts of 21 days or less, and ten 40-day water fasts. I believe fasting is a critical part of a healthy lifestyle. Many natural processes such as autophagy, only occur during fasting. Hunger goes away after a few days, although I tend to develop a crazy obsession on what I'm going to eat once the fast ends. Fasting was a common custom in many ancient cultures and continues to be in many religious traditions. I am glad to see it become more accepted in our modern culture.

Starting in February 2023 at age 58, I did fastig for 29 days. This wasn’t the first time for me, but the longest. In addition, I started mild training under medical supervision on my smart bike trainer, controlling puls and power rates during each excercise. The results are stunning. Starting at 253 pounds, I’ve lost 41 pounds and can confirm the loss of more than a pound a day, 95% beeing fat. My cardiac situation was perfect during the period. But thats not the main target, I was going for. All inflamatory processes in my body, especially my stomac, angles and my skin are gone. My blood pressure normalized and the blood values are perfect. My senses were totally reset, wich makes it still hard to eat processed salty and suggary food. I stoped regular alcohol consumption and enjoy one glass of beer or wine with friends only on weekends. I had to go throug a process to get used to regular eating too, which took me about three weeks. The most astonishing affect was, that I had no hunger over the whole time and could have extended the excercise from that standpoint as well. I was even able to cook meals for my wive, when she returned from work. But foremost, the experience to control myself with disciplin restored my trust in my mental strength and body. So Kenny, I fully understand what you experienced an congrats for your strength. P.S. I kept training on my smart bike trainer and lost another 12 pounds. My fitness inreased significantly. I am now able to ride on 200 Watts power for over an hour and enjoy my life with my family. So Kenny, keep going. It’s worth it.

My first fast was also the longest - 33 days. I went from 265lbs to a healthy 190, which i have maintained. I hadn’t intended on fasting, it just kinda happened. I was so engrossed in the project i was working on at the time that I didn’t eat for a few days. By then my appetite was gone, and I had no desire for food. I did drink some tea though, green tea and chamomile. After two weeks i still wasn’t interested in food, and it became a personal challenge to see how long i could go. I was feeling great, and so was my project. I was landscaping the yard, and it involved a lot of heavy lifting, digging, carpentry and associated physical labor. My physique was improving quickly, and I had lots of energy despite not eating. The yard was finished in 33 days, and i decided that I had fasted long enough, even though I wasn’t feeling hungry. I celebrated with an apple, and had miso soup for dinner. My stomach couldn’t handle more at that time, and i was thoroughly satiated. Since then I’ve been on one meal a day, with no processed foods, no dairy, no flour, no seed oils, and only self caught fish and free range chicken from my neighbor. I always do all my physical activities on an empty stomach, and eat when I stop for the day. After eating i rest until bedtime. The ideas that led me to this lifestyle all came from the research I have done on fasting. The worlds longest recorded fast lasted over a year, and was supervised by doctors. I think it was in the 1950s in Scotland. The guy in question maintained his weight for the rest of his life, staying healthy the whole time. Ketosis is the key, when you’re getting your energy from the fat stored in your liver instead of the calories in your gut. Another key health aspect is the lack of inflammation. Your digestion is a source of inflammation! The stomach acids eating at your stomach lining causes an immune system response. I can’t remember where I’ve found all this information, but Thomas DeLauer here on RU-vid was a good inspiration for me back in the beginning. I also started following Ayurvedic dietary principles. I wish everyone good health and vitality, and hope you reach your goals in life.

I've been intermittent fasting for about 6 months now and I've went from 293 to 250. I drink a coffee in the morning, water all day, and eat one big meal when I get off work at 2am. The most annoying and difficult part is having people telling me that "I NEED TO EAT". If I worked a 12 or 16 hour shift at work people would notice that I haven't eaten and would literally freak out about it.

In 1988 I fasted from 2nd week in January until 1st week of July. I did not eat a morsel in that time. If I needed energy I’d have a glass of milk with sugar. I was a vegetarian at the time [21 years] and Vegan the past 20 years I lost a lot of weight from 7 1/2 stone to less than 5. Starvation becomes addictive as it becomes like a drug of choice. I wanted to fast for 40 days and 40 nights…but I just couldn’t break my fast. In 1988 I was 25/26. I cooked for others. I was taken up in the spirit and shown many visions. I did a 30 day fast and lost a pound a day. However it was more of an eating disorder episode, I wasn't at a weight that would make this dangerous. It takes serious freakin commitment, especially when you were on the other spectrum of an eating disorder prior to that which was binge eating. My husband visited for christmas during a deployment and I hated how I looked at the time he came home, and told myself I was going to lose the weight before he came back home. Husband came back off of his deployment a month later and needless to say he was a bit shocked when he saw me. I went from 145 to 115... I looked like a completely different person. (I can't say it made me feel better at all honestly). Though the fact I was able to commit to something so difficult made me realize I was stronger than I thought I was.

I got faster almost immediately which is the worst thing that could happen as it fed the habit. I dealt with Bulimia for 8 years before i was so sick of how it destroyed and controlled my life. Quit it without treatment. When i look back at pictures it is scary to think how small i got. I looked like an Ethiopian.

Despite Kenny gaining back the weight, this was a very brave and meaningful act. I think one of the issues with prolonged fasting for weight loss is that it doesn't create habits. Building the habits of exercise, portion control, and food choices ultimately keep the weight off. Intermittent fasting could result in better outcomes, because it's short term and can be made habitual.

A lot of excess weight is water, that tells you are sodium deficient, White dinner salt is poison and should be avoided. Sodium allows the excess fluid to enter your cells then it can be processed then urinated out, once you lose the bulk of the excess weight Then you can fast 2 to 3 days a week, use Celtic sea salt or Himalayan salt, a pinch between your finger every 3 hours, you will run to the toilet More, that tells you the fluid is being moved out, as you lose the fluid introduce some exercise and increase it as the weight goes down. Think more about the quantity of food you eat AND the fluid you drink.

I have been intermittent fasting since May 2023. I've lost 29 pounds. I am on one meal a day. Sometimes I'll have two meals a day. It depends, extended fasting can actually resolve emotional issues that cause people to over eat, or eat highly processed foods/drinks which lead to weight gain. There's not really a spiritual/deep healing element to intermittent fasting like there is with extended dry or water fasting. In saying that, unhealthy habitual patterns can need to be chipped away at for years- it takes awareness and vigilance.

Brilliant documentary, he has such a likeable personality and optimism. Personally I went from 275 at 6'2 down to 190 from March 2018 through January 2019. I attribute all of it to intermittent fasting. Sometimes fasts were within 48 hours, but I also went for 3-5 days at a time, all the while staying under 10g gross carbs a day. I also had a job with lots of physical labor, and there were days I came home weighing 3 pounds less than what I weighed in the morning, with the weight never going back up. Unfortunately, I ended up gaining all of it back after I felt like I looked how I wanted, especially after weighlifting for 7 months of that time. Now here I am, down 30 pounds once again, but this time doing it through a controlled and moderate diet that I'm trying to make into a permanent fixture of my lifestyle. This video was a great extra boost for my own journey of body transformation. It's advice we've all heard dozens if not hundreds of times, but they only real longevity we can have in maintaining a healthy weight is to establish a healthy relationship with food. That said, fasting is a great way to kick yourself out of the feeling of defeat and lack of control/optimism. Watching the weight just melt off day after day gave me such a rush, and I can call on that memory now to sustain me when I feel like I'm going to spin out again. I guess I just wanted to wish everyone well in their own battle to master their relationship with food. It can be done!
