The "Hook" name was inspired by Sawyer's eyepatch and a reference to Captain Hook of the Peter Pan fairy tale, Ray Sawyer had lost his right eye in a near-fatal car crash in Oregon in 1967, and thereafter always wore an eyepatch.

"Freakin' at the Freaker's Ball!" Many of Dr. Hook's songs from the first two albums were written by children's poet Shel Silverstein, who wrote the classic poetry books "A Light In The Attic," and "Where The Sidewalk Ends." "Carry Me Carrie," and "The Queen Of The Silver Dollar" are also totally representative of the Hook/Silverstein sensibility!

The eye-patch guy (Ray Sawyer) lost his eye in a motor vehicle accident and found wearing a glass eye uncomfortable so he opted for the patch. The group's name was influenced by his patch, because it was memorable and the Hook part of the name was based on Capt Hook. A former band mate, George Cummings (the one with the really deep voice in "Cover of Rolling Stone"), came up with the name when the group needed one in a hurry.

This is from their period when they cleaned up their act...'70's rock band with drug problems who would have thunk it /s. It was a weird dichotomy, their early songs were some of the funniest and most playful such as Cover of The Rolling Stone, Penicillin Penny, Acapulco Goldie, Roland the Roadie and Gertrude the Groupie, Freakin' at the Freakers Ball, and most importantly Get my Rocks Off (not for the faint of heart); and yet some of the most touching love songs Carry Me Carrie, Sylvia's Mother, and Queen of the Silver Dollar. After they cleaned up their act, they found more mainstream success. For this period you can also check out A Little Bit More, If Not You, and for something a little more light hearted, Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk.

The musician was famous for the black eye patch he wore after he lost his eye in a car accident.
