Who plays higher notes? who moves fingers faster?... Boys always like to "compare the size of their instrument"... It is very impressive technically, but is it Art? Sport? Circus? As an amateur trumpet player myself, I am very impressed, but I get more emotion from a single note by Miles Davis. Thanks for uploading though, it is worth seeing.
Wynton definitely played the best out of the 4 and he didn't have to go into the extreme upper register to do so. All 4 of them are fantastic players though
Wynton was the most musical, Arturo did some super human shit, Faddis played high the whole time, and Morrison did some cool shit with his fingering hand
Sandoval is one of the best all around trumpet players of this or any generation. A true virtuoso who can play anything, make the trumpet do whatever he wants.
Faddis clearly stands out to me the best sounding. Arturo flew in from another planet. Morrison a doc severnson/Ferguson rep. Unreal Winton well.....pay attention!
Arturo hands down but there's footage of him and Wynton doing a masterclass and Marsalis showed more there than he did here I think here Wynton is like I gotta be able to play tomorrow I can't do what you guys are doing without feeling it in the morning
They were the only ones trying to steer it back to being music again, Morrison is just copying the others and Sandoval is ego tripping pushing himself way past his limit. It just reeks of unprofessionalism.
LOL! Seriously with all the dissin’?!?! 4 of the most incredible trumpet players ever doin’ some improv and having FUN, and so many famous musicians here on Utube are critics. HA, and I about busted a gut when Sandoval blew out with no piece in the horn - remember doing that back in high school for kicks . . . but I’m no Sandoval; we did it for FUN too. Sometimes you gotta have fun! (he plays better with no piece than any of you Utube critics armed with a Monette and a Jet-tone)
I Agree, They arent tyring to do a perfectly structred tension and release solo here, they are trying to have some fun and go nuts as trumpeters and show off! Wynton keeps turning the heat down because he thinks it should be more "correct" Jazz. I Iike Wynton Marsalis!, but in this case I have to say "Go home Wynton." Wynton is missing the point of this Gig. This gig is not for showing how beautiful you can play. Wynton not joning in is making the others work harder to keep it hot.
So you think i can play smooth jazz Thanks.Mr 67 year old one time drummer you don't and never played trumpet your opinion is not worthlly of rebuttal and for the record i've played a Jazz festival IN L.A. with Herb Hancock on piano played as his guess musician on stage with LEE Morgan while in high school and ask to play with GROOVE WASHINGTON jr i may not be the trumpet player i once was but my opinion regarding the trumpet out weight 's a drummer's opinion any day. bom bom po bom bom po.
Read my first posting (Don't get me wrong i like them all. But if i had to play like only one of them Wynton's the man) This is a show like a old time "CUT" session i know this foolish one i've played these before normally they would pick a winner at the end. over all i like Wynton style over the years. And for the record i am a Clifford Brown fan as well and i don't smoke. This is not that serious enjoy the music....Tweet (BILL CHASE AND CAT ANDERSON0 ARE THE KINGS OF TWEET GREAT FOR BIG BAND
Aren't you this smooth jazz guy who plays about six notes (2 to 4 of them always out of tune). I see one of your vids is up to 9 views. Congratulations. Now don't you think you should turn off the computer and get those scales together? So typical that a youtube guy with no technique and below average musicianship wants to talk cyber smack. But isn't that always the way? Bottom line, these are all world class players. But it's inappropriate for a poseur to be telling others what time it is.
Your comment is naive. This is supposed to be a dog and pony show meaning you show up with tricks. If you don't, then you don't have the tools for this segment. Want art? Purchase Blue Trane. Still with that said, your dismissing the other 3 as bird tweeters (when they have individual voices as opposed to Wynton's flagrant copping) is ignorant. Sure, everyone begins the journey imitating (ex Faddis during his Dizzy phase) but in jazz when you don't get over that, there's no more to be said.
@Foreverlifex As a trumpet player in high school i could maybe hit a D above scale i purchase a cheap mouthpiece that took me to B's sometime C's in a week because Bill Chase was someone i wanted to play like,a mouth piece design for "you" (shallow the better) can take anybody to the upper registers .But that alone does not make you a good trumper player. High register sounds best with a big band. There are kids on youtube playing the high notes with no talent. It's really no big deal anymore.
I don't think that Wynton is on fire here or anything like that but I applaud the fact that he's the only one not trying to get into that silly, juvenile, higher, faster, mine's-bigger-than-yours, bullshit little game that all the others (great trumpeters in their own right) are getting into. I'm a bass player and I thought that it was only drummers, guitarists and bassists that when they got on-stage started doing all that silly, chop-arama crap - I guess I was wrong...
I don't think that Wynton is kicking arse here but I applaud the fact that he's the only one not trying to get into those juvenile, higher, faster, mine's-bigger-than-yours, bullshit little games that the others (all great trumpeters) are getting into. Wynton's style of trumpet playing is not based in high register notes however he is cable of playing them. Faddis,Arturo, Morrisson (not to sure of ) that's what the do and that's about it making bird calls tweet, tweet, tweet, Yeah they're great for that Duh. Don't get me wrong i like them all. But if i had to play like only one of them Wynton's the man. Get over it !
no no, Arturo Sandoval never played a monette trumpet. Arturo "the guy who is playing with no mouthpiece" did it just to show that he could do it. But on a side note, Wynton marsalis is is playing a very early monette.
notice at 0:58 - 1:14 sandoval plays his horn with no mouthpiece, i tried something like that in high school and about wrecked my lip for the rest of the day
definitely not listenable at times... phenomenal trumpet players, but I prefer to listen to them playing with other instrumentalists, actually making music.
Wynton wasn't pressured to play like the rest of them. He continued to play in his own style & make some beautiful music...the sign of a great musician!!!!!
easy to sense that some awkward feelings occurred. They were indeed "talking" to each other somewhat, yet more of a crass, shouting type of conversation. Clearly to me James gave it his all. If it did become a sporting event, Arturo aimed for that. I think it'd be sort of silly to suggest otherwise. I'm of the mind that Arturo did the least amount of caring communication to the others on either side, but I suppose that too is a form of communication. As an aside, did Doc & Maynard ever meet even once? I grew up in the era when they were all alive and touring yet they would never seem to gather in the same spot to play-- Buddy, Urbie, Doc, Maynard, Oscar... The exception I guess was Buddy coming on Carson to play and Ed seeming to love the novelty of a moment like that.
just a contest to see who can get the growliest, weirdest sounds from their horns...not a very musical set from these otherwise fine players....would much rather hear them play more melodically...the novelty wears off quickly...
You can clearly see the difference between the level of men's skills. Faddis and Sandoval plays to force the upper register without being able to really change. Wynton throw a very laid back cool phrases. Talent of Wynton is light years ahead. Morrison is also incredibly good.
There´s a great difference between the very talented musician and the true genius. I Salute the genius of trumpet Arturo Sandoval. He can play all the styles if he wanted to, being extremely creative all the time. He is not a struggling "dressed white king kid" who still plays like a Berklee College student, repeating clichés and blues transcribed phrases collected on the books played by other trumpetists of the past with nothing new...Jazz is evolution !
haha sandoval is so tasteless in this...forgetting musicality and replacing it with endless technicality. Despite this I still admire him as a phenomenal player. There is a lot of showing off in this from all the guys apart from marsalis who is perhaps more understated. A good listen nonetheless.
You can tell Wynton is not happy he signed up for this gig lol. Seriously these guys are all great trumpet players and the point of all this was they were just wowing the crowd and having fun. Wynton has made some controversial comments about many jazz musicians not really playing jazz but that is his definition. Wynton is a great trumpet players and so is Arturo. For the record my favorite of all time was Clifford Brown.
They're all just having fun, let them just have their fun. Does everything have to soapboxed over and argued upon? Geez, they'll play "tastefully and with responsibility" (which are highly subjective terms, anyway) at some other time, on some other song.
This is like watching 4 world class body builders try to outdo each other. I think Wynton wins for pure musicality, with James Morrison a close second because he can play every other instrument at this level. I'd love to see the other play trombone like Morrison does.
Alan Ross. I agree. Don't get me wrong - I'm absolutely thrilled with their technical abilities, like every other trumpet player but think of the MUSIC we would have heard if Sandoval played the Trumpet in the same manner that he plays the piano. Thank God for Doc!!!
Arturo's upper register work and articulation kills! Jon Faddis has a classy feel to his playing( probably inherited as dizzy's protege. Wynton, well I dont know how he got his trumpet to sound that was at the beggining, but I loved it. And of course Art is Art and nothing more needs to be said on that :).
