Plus why would a book be in danger of being lost if they’re only banned in a single country? I mean yes some books may not make it out of a particular country and any sort of book banning is bad especially for a local people, but wouldn’t most books be available anywhere? I mean in the original novel it’s never really stated where the book takes place but it’s safe to assume this is just how the world is. Other dystopian novels like 1984 and Brave New World actually explain how the world is. Seriously how did this make it past first draft? Fahrenheit 451, the movie, was bad, but I still have a lot of respect for Michael B Jordan and Michael Shannon for making it. I think they tried to do their best in making this movie, and I give them props for making it. After watching this I definitely need to read the book again. I don’t quite remember the VR concept from the book, but the way you described it kind of reminds me of this episode of Black Mirror where there’s a dystopian society where the lower class lives inside rooms completely surrounded by screens. I understand why an adaptation like this would want to show something more familiar to audiences, but I still think it would have been better for them to make something more creative and out there similar to Bradbury’s original vision. Just because we have a lot of the technology Bradbury imagined doesn’t mean we should just include normal modern tech. Put a fictional spin on it

I haven't read the book in a couple of years, but I remember coming away feeling that the book was much more about technology dumbing down humanity than about censorship. I think the idea was that the books give humanity the ideas to save ourselves. In that sense, I understand why they thought including social media was a good idea, but I also think it wasn't done well.

Not to be mean but in a way this is also a failure of the US education system - the director/co-writer is an American and couldn't understand the book's message even though it's mandatory reading in school? Oh boy... It's also one of the more straightforward classics, so I'm double confused.

It's not necessarily that they didn't understand the book. But they thought they could improve on it, make it 'cooler' instead of something you had to read. Whenever a screenwriter or director working on a literary adaptation starts to say, 'Wouldn't it be cool (or edgy or epic) if...' an angel weeps. And, of course, mindless popular drama (TV, to Bradbury) burning away the literary qualities of books is exactly what Farenheit 451 is about.

Not defending the movie, but you can have an opressive goverment, AND internet and social media. There are multiple examples for this around the world. You just need tools to control them... Actually that could have been an interesting twist on the story, even explore how not the lack of but the overwhelming amount of information can manipulate people.

Haven't finished the full video yet but I just wanted to comment on your point about the internet/social media existing in a society that is opposed to free thought: Considering how Twitter and other social media sites are all concentrated in one part of the world where people share similar politics, pander to the same demographics and have been shown to either outright ban or shadow ban people who don't conform (but have actually done nothing to break their terms of service) - I wholeheartedly disagree. Admittedly, the current state of things doesn't match up to this extreme authoritarian depiction, but I can definitely see the internet existing in a censored and controlled state in the same way we can foresee the mainstream media being controlled.

Anytime I watch a movie, I give it thirty minutes and then decide if I’ll continue to watch it or not. I didn’t even get past five minutes of the 2018 movie adaptation without turning it off. It felt like such a disrespectful cash grab of the original, powerful content.

Funnily enough, I actually loved the book on my first read, which I'm guessing is due in large part to having a fantastic English teacher the year that we read this (frankly I got lucky and had mostly fantastic teachers and English teachers all throughout my general education, so there were few books I actively disliked because of class. Catcher in the Rye and The Great Gatsby being the big ones.) Happy I skipped out on this movie as this is also one of my favorite books of all time and Bradbury is one of my favorite authors, so when I saw a preview for it on HBO, I immediately put it on the skip list.

I read 451 as an adult. While I appreciate your nuance about the politics of it, I’m still surprised that people don’t notice all the other things wrong with it BESIDES the politics. The misogyny, the tropes, the fanciful and unbelievable trappings around a serious conversation. Also, the girl in the books was fetishized, too. I haven’t seen the movie. And Bradbury’s writing is beautiful at times. But the book is full of contempt for women besides the “perfect child.” He literally describes the society’s lunacy as feminine. And I can’t sympathize with a lead who beats his wife.

According to Wikipedia a birds genome has up to 8.2 giga base pairs. So 8.2e9 base pairs. Base pairs have 4 options so 2 bits of info. That’s 16.4e9 bits. That’s 8.02e9 bytes ~ 8 gigabytes for the whole of birds genome. They couldn’t find an SD card with more than that to attach to the birds leg with the transponder?

Ray Bradbury was from my hometown and I actually got to hear him speak at our local library about 20 years ago. It was really exciting even though at the time I hadn't yet read any of his books. He was a funny and entertaining speaker. I've now since read Faranheit 451 and I've got to say I actually liked the movie adaptation from the '60s better than the book, as it made some changes that I think actually improved the story, like aging up the girl character to be an adult, so she can serve to be a direct contrast to Montag's wife, who is effectively played by the same actress. I was bummed it didn't include the mechanical spider dogs, but I don't think they had the technology to make that happen in a movie back then. Haven't seen this newer adaptation.

I have 4 indoor pigeons as companions. Birds have extremely sensitive respiratory systems. You can't use non stick pans, self cleaning functions on an oven, air purifies with ionizers and ozone, or you will kill your birds. Also things like scented candles, incense, and essential oils, are very bad for them. So smoke? Yeah that bird is deaaad
