A popular Tongan dessert, I bring to you, Faikakai. The rich coconut milk is blended with the sweet caramel sauce, added to it is a touch of homemade sweet dough. I hope you all enjoy!
Note: I made the recipe before but the sauce wasn't quite right. I found it was easier to make the caramel sauce with white sugar than brown. Anyways, hope you all enjoy!!! Malo.
Ingredients:
Caramel sauce:
1 1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup coconut milk
Sweet dumplings:
1 1/2 cup flour (sifted)
2 tsp baking powder
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 cup coconut milk
1/3 cup water

I love your videos please don’t mind the haters and their two cents. Vave mau pe kihe fakaanga ikai ko ha ulungaanga ia oku lelei. I love your videos because for me growing up, I loooooooooove my mom’s peito and these dishes! I’ve always loved to eat, but never really the kind to sit down and learn how to do it. So now that I have a family of my own, I want to show my little two year old what I grew up eating. So thank you for the recipe. You’re my go-to channel of making Tongan or just Polynesian in general. Malo ‘aupito. ♥️

I wouldn't call it fkanga....I call it helping out for improvement. Ive tried this n it came out pikipiki. So having others add n help out with their experience is good and help others as well. .I love reading other people two cents for improvement in cooking. There is really nothing wrong with others two cents to mine, every bit of opinion helps,🙏🙏

Instead of white sugar brown or raw sugar is best more natural then white sugar. It gives it that brown redish colour and smells way better.

A woman presented this to her great grandchild in a taste test video and I was like, I bet I know exactly how that's made. I look up a recipe video, and sans the coconut, I was right!! Interesting dish! Definitely something that comes from a poor home trying to make something delicious. As an italian I can not only appreciate that, but even say admire it. I bet despite all the coconut *I'm not a fan normally* I would probably enjoy this dish, or a variation thereof. Is there a way to do this without the coconut cream?

I already made the lolo and it's dark brown lol did I do something wrong??? And my dough is taking forever to cook lol it's still cooking! Lol when I mixed the flour and stuff with the coconut milk and water it didn't really do as much forming as yours did it was still a little dry so I added water little by little til I got the right paste feeling...could that be the reason my topai is not cooking fast???
@TasteoftheSouthpacific
@TasteoftheSouthpacific 6 лет назад
1) Firstly, its fine if its dark brown, just as long as you didn't burn it (when the sugar is burnt it'll taste bitter(or kona). Trust me when I attempted the first time making the caramel I burnt my sugar but what I realize is that if you set the heat at close to medium heat and constantly stir till the sugar completely melts, you're good. 2) If your dough was too dry, yes, add a bit of water till you're able to get a somewhat sticky dough. 3) For your dough not cooking fast, it took me about 20-25mins till the dough was cooked. Make sure your water is boiling before you put in the topai. AND finally, I hope what I mention helps and if it doesn't let me know. Good luck!! 😄
@anamoala6882
@anamoala6882 6 лет назад
TasteoftheSouthpacific ok yea i burnt it. Dammit!! Lol I'll keep trying tho...I kept my burner on medium high...between #7 and 8 then when I added the lolo I put it down to the #5 obviously I wasn't thinking lol but it smelled really good lol omg the things I do for food lmao. do Thank you so much!!
@TasteoftheSouthpacific
@TasteoftheSouthpacific 6 лет назад
Lol if it helps try setting it a little lower that way your sugar won't get burnt. Just remember to stir consistently. Let me know how it goes! 😊

Don't worry, I've been through that. That just mean you burnt your sugar. When you're melting your sugar you want to just start it off at medium heat for about 5 mins or so and than turn it to low heat and you have to keep stirring. Its a process, but keep stirring. I hope you get it next time! And if not, I'll will try my best to walk you through it lol

Did you put in baking powder? You have to make sure the dough isn't too runny. You want a thick paste.
@anidabbas3322
@anidabbas3322 2 года назад
That's a pikipiki topai faikakai hihihhh U don't turn down the heat before u put in the flour. U turn it down after at least it boils twice while topai is already in if you want a mafu(fluffy on the inside) n don't want pikipiki. Topai should grow in size from baking powder. Cut them in pieces n let cool first before adding the Lolo. I wouldn't add any sugar or milk to the flour mix since ur adding lolo to it which already has so.much sugar n coconut🙏🙏

Kaleve toddy is used in Eastern Micronesia and Polynesian Outliers (Coconut sugar/syrup) to sweeten their traditional dishes. Just cut the bud of a flowering coconut or palm tree, collect the sap and boil it into a syrup. Most islands especially those who were shown how to cut kaleve had a lot of sugar in their diet but did not suffer diabetes until the introduction of imported foods and table sugar. Kaleve syrup has a GI of 35 about half the GI of normal sugar.
