This time on our Away With The Hills adventure we wanted to wild camp up near Kinder Scout (ideally at the wool packs) in the Peak District. It was Boxing Day 2022 and a beautiful day, but that would change very quickly.
Check out our video of when we attempted to camp at Kinder Scout.

That was a lovely hike and what a great view from your camping spot. Nice warm meal to heat you up too. New subscribers here. Happy new year 👍

Yeah it just goes to show that sometimes things work out for the better, even when they don’t go to plan. Thanks for the sub!

You were wise to cut the journey short. I sprained my ankle badly up there some years ago. The problem with Grindsbrook at that time of year is that there is ice on the rocks and they become very slippery. Enjoyable video!

Great little video, well done for getting out. Just like all us wild campers you start off heavy and then get lighter, I would recommend you write a kit list if you don’t already, but then when you get home assess what you used and what you didn’t, with regards to water filtering I would definitely go with the katadyn be free, lightweight and compact, I went for 3L as you can then just filter into a clean bladder and have enough for the entire camp. I would strongly recommend getting a simple map app for your I use outdoor active but also carry a gps device.route planning in winter is so important you were right to turn back, always better than ploughing on and getting into trouble, winter camping is a lot harder for all these reasons, summer camping is far easier, I would also suggest you find a less popular hill than kinder or you are not likely to not encounter others. Last tip, if you look at my vids I treated myself to a small water bottle, essential item for winter camps. Sending you a like and a sub, would be great if you could do the same, well done for getting out ❤👍

Thank you for the great tips👍🏻 the Katadyn be free is at the top of my list so far as people say it’s got a good flow rate. I actually use outdoor active myself as well. It’s great.

Here's a tip for having warm feet on cold mornings when camping. Take a couple of hand warmers, put them into the socks you have had on during the day, and then stuff the socks into your boots. This will both keep your boots from frosting up and dry out your sweaty socks overnight.

Nice honest video, I was on kinder that night not a million miles away from you, I went up what is called grindslow knoll, easier than grindsbrook but still quite steep. Where the nags head pub is there is a sign post for the penine way, go up there and it's sign posted from there. Keep up the good work guys♥️

Happy new year Clark. I did feel a bit of a failure not getting to where we wanted, but it would have been just to dangerous to try with the rucksacks on!

The better route to kinder is up jacobs ladder, I have done the route you bailed with a day pack and the last part was on lands and knees, dangerous with full pack, right call to bail.

Thanks for taking the time to comment and let us know about the route up Jacobs ladder, I’ll check it out for when we have another attempt.

It looks like to attempted to ascend via Grindsbrook Clough, the final part of which is a proper scramble. From Edale, you would find it easier ascending onto Kinder via Ringing Roger. Or you could park at Barber Booth and ascend via Jacobs Ladder. Both routes would avoid the need for scrambling, although it is obviously still quite an ascent!. Well done for giving it a go though!

Which water bottle you need would depend if you like to glug water or suck. The Grayl Geopress can hold 750ml and is great if you wanna tip water down your neck or decant water into another bottle to add powder etc. Not cheap and not the lightest but filters nearly everything. Another one to consider would be the Lifestraw cheaper and lighter but you have to suck the water through the filter.
@awaywiththehills
@awaywiththehills Год назад
Thanks for the in depth advice Andrew 🙏🏼 We’d like to have the option to fill into other bottles as well, so I’ll check out that Grayl Geopress.

The poles are amazing David, they give you so much more stability. It helps my knees so much. If solo is what you’re wanting to do, get out and give it a go!
