Hi Julian. Subscribed and gave thumbs up. Geez I love your Secan, you deserve a great bike. Who gives a shit if there’s no gravel around? Perfect bike in any case Like your humour and same guy as myself. So 👍 Cheers. Stu
I hope you're enjoying your new Fairlight, Julian. I managed to get out on mine for the first time this weekend after all these storms. I'd be really interested to hear how you found using our Apidura handlebar bag with your Fairlight - I'm now in the market for that style of bag and i'm concerned about kinking the hoses. I previously had a front rack I could strap things to instead - it seemed much easier! See you on the gravel.
Hi, I haven't used the Apidura yet, so can't comment. But important to note that it is a soft bag, with no structure, so I think really only suitable for clothing, sleeping bag, etc, and not hard items. I'd hold fire if I were you, until you're sure what you want to use it for.
Yes, if you didn’t want another Mason, the only other option was a Fairlight! I’ve followed their ‘journey’ as I have with Mason (I have a Definition). Been thinking about a steel frame, the Resolution is the obvious one, I’d consider a Secan IF it had concealed cables, just a bit too old school for me otherwise.
@@JulianHutchings I'll be very interested to hear how it rides against the Definition. I have eTap on mine, which gets rid of half the cables completely!
Interesting to see you went through the same list as mine :) and finally Secan 👍. Also, with 75cm inseam are you able to comfortably stand over on this size frame ? Not sure whether Stand Over is still a good measurement to consider when choosing the frame !
Great video - you mention you’d had Titanium before - what’s your thoughts on Ti vs Steel and vs carbon did that matter ? I’m looking for something for LeJOG 2021..
I didn't find it any better than the carbon and aluminium bikes I had. I like the look of the Ribble and Reilly models but I can't really see the advantage, other than to have one! I think the best bike for Lejog is the one that you already find most comfortable; what do you ride now?
I’m on a giant toughroad at the minute converted to 32mm road tyres mainly doing a 25 mile commute with oanniers and occasional weekend rides out which will now be weekend LeJog training rides.. I do like the look of the Fairlight Secan. Never ridden steel, can you tell the difference from Alu and Carbon ? I did consider the giant Fastroad as it looks more road bike with the comfort of flat bars.
That's a difficult question. Can you get a steel bike from a mainstream bike maker? It's a very nice bike and I love it; I've made two additions which add to the comfort - a Canyon seat-post and a Gilles Berthoud Soulor saddle. I already have carbon and aluminium bikes and used to have a steel bike, so I wanted steel. I think what it comes down to is: do you want it, and can you afford it? If the answer to those two is yes, then buy it. If the answer to either of them is no, then don't.
Julian Hutchings Thanks for that. I’ve got an Al frame hybrid that my son wants so it’s an opportunity for me to upgrade. Steel seems like a good balance between comfort, durability and value compared to Ti and C frames.
A bit late now, but one bike manufacturer that would have been worth considering would have been Shand Cycles (www.shandcycles.com/). Their Stoater and Stooshie models would have done the job admirably. Like the video and the wonderfully sporadic profane outbursts. Oh, and by the way when you point to linked videos, nothing appears on screen - may want to double-check those parts before posting.
I don't really like background music, but most RU-vid videos seem to have it, so I've kind of gone along with that. But you're prolly right; I will re-think it.
It’s ridiculous that you buy a brand new bike from a company costing thousands of pounds and have to then pay extra for a brass top cap! What’s wrong with these companies? It’s like Mason cycles who will sell you a £5K bike and say if you want we can set it up tubeless for you for an extra £20-£30! What?!! Stop being tight arses and throw these things in for free!!!
Fair (light) point but the bike does come with a top cap. Maybe their reasoning is that not everyone wants a brass top cap - it does mark easily. Good point about Mason though and I have one.
Julian Hutchings I actually love the look of Mason and fairlight bikes, but come on! If someone drops thousands on your product treat them like a king for at least the duration of the purchase which includes setting the tyres up tubeless for Free!!!
@@BikeLife154 what do you think the profit margins are like in these small companies? Fairlight is ridiculously good value compared to almost any other company for what you get. Why are you kicking off over an optional extra like a smelly child? Grow up
