The short-lived version of Fairport (when they just went by that abbreviated name), which only lasted 6 months and performed a small number of gigs. They recorded the one LP "Gottle O'Geer", on which half the band didn't play - but they're all playing here! Dave Swarbrick (vcls, vln) / Dave Pegg (bs, vcls) / Dan Ar Bras (gtr, vcls) / Roger Burridge (vln) / Bob Brady (piano, vocals) / Bruce Rowland (drums).
Recorded at "Festigavla-76", a rock festival at Borgundgavla near Ålesund, western Norway on August 1 1976 by NRK TV and broadcast 3rd September.

Saw this version of Fairport in Trondheim, Norway, must have been only a couple of days before or after this festival. A concert I still remember. SWARBRICK RULES!

That Norwegian crowd is undemonstrative, somewhere between dour and cool, which is what I recall roadying for a folk duo there. Someone is thinking: "maybe I go home for pickled Herrings?"

Peggy is a very lucky bass player in this band, drums & electric gits are always restrained, so much more potential for bass

Saw them at Glastonbury in 1971. They had the whole crowd doing English folk dances. Best festival I ever went to. It was magic.

Rare and interesting footage. I saw them a couple of years later. I don’t think they were at their best in the late 70’s. They played well, but were a bit lacklustre and struggled to get any sort of atmosphere going.

Half the audience look elated (FP fans I guess), the other half at the front look totally bored. (locals I guess). FP are still wearing flares in 1976, that's surprising, or were they making a statement. & Swarb is sporting a mullet

Amazing what turns up on the interweb. Good as the DP and DS soloing on 'Sloth' is, it has little or no relationship with the actual song! Like a couple of other Fairport line-ups, this one is unbalanced for want of a proper lead guitarist.
@MrGinger62
@MrGinger62 6 лет назад
Frank Eventi Dan Ar Bras was and is a brilliant guitarist, but not really what Fairport needed. Who could follow Richard Thompson? Maartin Alcock had the technical ability, but lacked the ‘feel’. Jerry Donahue similarly brilliant musician, but better with Fotheringhay. My favourite Fairport lineup was the first I saw in 1979, which evolved out of this one, with Simon Nicol, Dave Swarbrick, Dave Pegg and Bruce Rowlands. The Bonny a Bunch of Roses / Tipplers Tales lineup.
