Everyone talks about Mike when talking about FNM, but all these guys are geniuses. Billy Gould on bass and Puffy on drums is what dreams are made of when it comes to rithm section. Roddy and Jim Martin also did a fantastic job.

I love how he always says how boring he is and has nothing to say yet he's literally the most fascinating person I've ever come across and yes very funny too, I don't know who he's trying to fool lol

He wanted to be a poet growing up, he was to go into literature if the music scene fizzled up... He acts and reacts like a play, his music is a character persona of himself like the poets of old, theatre.

I love this song... One if the best on that album. This video was so weird because their record label spent the video budget on "Small Victory" and "Midlife Crisis", when it came time to "Everything's Ruined" the band decided to make it as cheap looking as possible.

Patton was pretty much a kid when he joined FNM(who had already released two albums with Chuck Mosley on vocals). FNM, having already recorded all of the music for the next album, need a new singer. Patton came in, wrote all the lyrics, vocal melodies, and recorded the whole album in less than three weeks. The first album with Patton turned their biggest hit, Epic. This made the record company a lot of money. So, in Everything’s Ruined, the record company sees Patton as a shiny copper penny(a bouncing little baby) who became a fat nickel so fast. He made them rich. During the recording of this album, Patton was given creative input that influenced the sound of the band. The record company was famously very unhappy with what they were hearing. They wanted it to sound like Epic. They viewed it as commercial suicide. In the song, they invested in him, but a penny won’t do. He’s counterfeit. He’s not the money making machine they thought. With this new album and direction of the band, everything was ruined as far as they were concerned.

I've always interpreted this one as commentary on the album Angel Dust, which they deliberately made less radio friendly after the wild success of The Real Thing which saw them touring for a couple of years non stop with bands they hated and Patton had to play the rockstar role, which he hated, so in a sense a kinda f you to the label execs they made rich.

So good to finally see this song coming to your ears through "the headphones of truth",hahah...:) Yes, sir, it`s about the classic FNM that you can get.:) Their mature, formed sound ! Later on, they threw it only in some sort of decadence that was known to them, almost deconstructing themselves, but fortunately with the same respectable results (like Evidence, needless to say). Sure, everyone here is great: the keyboards are on point, drums, bass, vocals, guitar, seemingly incoherent, they play different things, but fit into a perfect match, which makes this song one of their most orgasmic, so to say...:)) They are a really rare combination of people from the beginning. The drummer comes from the `old metal` school, but also from new wave/punk milieu , and the same can be said for the mighty bassist.:). On the other hand, the guitarist is a unique metal-head dude, playing in his early days with key musicians of Metallica... Yes.:)) And at the top of this, like a cherry, ubiquitous keyboardist Roddy, a quiet guy, shares his intimate likes with electronic, dance bands such as Depeche Mode in a first place, and so on...You mix it all up and you get this - the unexpected, but intelligent magical amalgam of sounds and influences. :) Of course, Mike, who came from Mr.B. was already taught to handle various music bands and genres, so from the very beginning ... they were so happy, as the lyrics say at the beginning. :))) Did you hear that rhythm section, drums and bass?... Tell me something- you`ve heard a lot of funk music by now anyway - it`s always a loose drums and the bass is going wild, isn`t it? Even with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, you`ve heard them recently, right? Shout out to all funky bassists of the world (one of them is Les Claypool, Primus, I expect to see them on your channel, they`re a knockout!) ... But, through this song, you can actually hear what is so specific about FNM groove and funkiness. It`s the bass pedal of the drums, man.:)))) There is no other band I have ever heard before, which used the exact folding of the bass pedal and slapping the bass in a wonderful and precise grovalistic rhythm like this band does! :)) It`s their thing entirely and one of the most copied music tricks out of the future bands, including the most famous one of them - Korn.:) Yeah, man, that was FNM`s invention and gift to a future music..:) That trick just shines on this album more than anywhere else...! It became their credo.:) It`s good to know! A lot of the songs from this album use it, one of them is A Small Victory, but I completely understand you if that song didn't suit you, it's kind of loose material, although thick, but the band itself complained on how it has been arranged back then, so.... And the lyrical aspect of this tune was simply brilliant. First of all, I`ll point you to the years of creation - 1991/2. Remember what was a dominant musical flow of that era? Well of course - Grunge ! :))) So, FNM fits to it`s vits also.:) ..In the lyrics especially. What were Grunge themes? You know, X-generation, parental issues, liberation, emancipation, nihilism, looking for a individual path... All present in this little piece. I’ve always looked at this song as one that actually describes the generation gap. :) The way parents look on their children with aspiration and yet with emotional inhibition, treating them almost as an asset that is the cause of success on any basis. This is why this business language appears in texts. It`s ironic, funny and really sad -to know that those you value the most have a different view from you on what success really is. So, in conclusion - to reach any real success and achievement, everything`s gotta be ruined....! That`s the real cry of the Grunge, feel free to say.. Of course, it doesn`t have to be like this at all, but...you know. Interesting, I chose a remark from another reactor on another channel, which says this song reminded him a lot to a fate of the child actor from that movie "Home Alone" - Macaulay Culkin.:) In a way, you know...his parents got rich on his fame, harassed him, neglected him, but supposedly they expected a large amounts of money from this wonder-kid.:/ which led him to all sorts of vices, drugs, alcohol, he made a counterfeit out of himself... And when he finally dissed them for good, he managed to get well and get on his feet...although his health, man.. ruined...A very deep topic.:/ Anyway, my shout to you& shout to Roxxane, she really did it again!:) Oops.:))

"Patton creates lyrics after hearing the instrumentals and, in the same way as the vocals, he approaches them depending on "what the music needs". His songwriting takes a phonetic perspective instead of a literal one, making sounds paramount - "the music tells the story", he says. As soon as he creates the melodies, he generally seeks words that sound the most similar to what he heard in his head. On the other hand, when working thematically, Patton says that each song is usually a character sketch acted out by him, "trying to appropriate their [respective] psycholog[ies]", and does not make them autobiographical." from wiki, I think thats why in pattons lyrics is more important the phonetic and rhythm of words than the actual meaning

Most definitely, this is why I like Patton. It doesn't need to make sense, just sound good. I've tried writing my little poems and stories in a more academic layout but it almost always ends up nonsensical with a broad theme. Mike learned to run with that it seems and it works.

Unblocked, woooo! This is one of my favorites. Getting through Angel Dust real quick now. Can't wait to see more reactions from King For a Day and Album of the Year. Hopefully, some Sol Invictus as well. That album divided the fans quite a bit imo. A lot of long time fans hated that release. I loved it. Edit: Wow, man, that lyrical breakdown was great. I never really listened to the words but sounds like it was inspired by the movie Wall Street.

This whole album is a trip. Yet still accessible. There are better prog rock bands and better funk metal bands and yada but... Nobody put it all together like FNM. At least on their first three or four records. In my lousy opinion, anyway.

Just noticed you did Everything's Ruined, as I was talking about it in the A Small Victory comments :P Well, your take is as good as mine about the lyrics (I know them by heart since when it came out). One of my favorite from FNM, and Mike as well. Nice reaction, as usual, mister !
