Can I just say, as a fellow crafter and someone who is well-acquainted with “RU-vid university,” you are one of the best diy RU-vidrs I have ever watched. Your explanations are very clear, informative and easy to follow. Your voice is lovely to listen to. But most of all, your editing skills and video production are HIGHLY APPRECIATED. There’s no rambling on and on prior to beginning the tutorial (thank you!), you show only the necessary parts of the tutorial and you appropriately switch to 2x speed without skipping anything essential. I really enjoyed and appreciated seeing the side by side comparison between the two different methods here. I’m making a little mouse house for my friend’s son and initially was going to use a cigar box. However, I kept adding more and more furniture and now the little mouse family needs to move to a bigger home. 😂 I decided to create a faux tree stump but couldn’t decide what medium to use. This video helped greatly with that. The tip about ensuring the tin foil is under the excess/jagged bits of clay bark was extremely useful as the tree stump house is going to end up in a child’s room. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you so much for your tutorials! Two years ago I promised my grandsons I would build a leprechaun trap for St Paddy's Day. Sadly I fell ill and had to have a liver transplant, so I missed the holiday last year and could not keep my promise. However, I made a goal to build something this year for them. Your videos inspired me to take on a big project including three traps incorporated into a tree house, a gold mine cave and a hanging cage. Using your techniques, my expectations were exceeded. I would like to share a few pics, but I don't know to do that. The boys helped work on it and it was so wonderful to share a special time associated with the one year anniversary of my transplant. Thank you so much for sharing this significant milestone!

I know I have watched this in the past. One of my veiwers suggested I watch your great bark technique. I just listed a tree video made with greenery picks, the bark from paperclay. Of course I love your channel and it has been on my subscriber list for years now. I believe I have referenced you in some of my earlier videos for my inspired makes. I am going to use some of these great techniques for older trees in my project. The trees I made look great, but we will just call them younger trees😂. Thank you so much for sharing you great talents and gnome world. It's just coming along amazingly...It's absolutely beautiful. I'm going on to pt 2 and 3.❤🥰

the paper towel one looks more swamp like, and the clay looks more forresty... in my opinion. Nice to have variety, nature does, why can't we?! I have an extremely novice question (I just started crafting in march - at 42 years old!)... why do we have to use the masking tape? I thought the foil and tape was optional, and made my trees without them entirely... but the clay tended to 'melt' downward, so had to do in stages... so realized the framework was necessary. BUT, why does the tape need to be there? And is there anything wrong with NOT having the framework (I have started using a removable framework now, and was scared I was doing it 'wrong')

If you tell on what heat you are backing you only say 175 or 180 or 185 I am not sure which scale the Canadians use, expect it is Centigrade.. By the way, I never thought of using the wrinkles in layers of paper I will certainly use that technique in a future project. I love the things you do.
@WhereTheGnomesLive
@WhereTheGnomesLive 3 года назад
I’m sure I would have said the lowest setting, on the oven first before I said the numbers? That would be why I gave an estimate on numbers because *now* the 175 180 makes sense to me lol I estimated numbers but said lowest setting, which “lowest” would be (to me) universal. If I didn’t say that then my apologies. My older videos aren’t the greatest. I’m getting better with time (I hope!) And thank you! I’m really happy to hear that, it means a lot 😊

I have a question. Do either of these methods result in bark that is a little bit flexible? I plan to use this to make something where the bark will go around an object, so I wanted to make a cylinder with a slit in the back so I can open it up, fit it around the object and then have it close around the object in it's original configuration. This will require the bark to be a little bit flexible so I can open up the cylinder, would either of these methods work? If anybody else has tried it, I'd also appreciate it if you could let me know if you think it would work! Thanks!

I believe they would be. You would have to weigh down the bottom or secure it so they don't move the structures around, but certainly solid enough for reptiles to go in and out of

I can't get the acrylic paint to hold on the glued tissue paper. Doesn't matter if I use a diluted paint (than the yellow-greyish paper shines through) or (almost) undiluted, it always cracks. I'll let it fully dry now and hope that the second layer might hold on the first (and the first doesn't peel off...). Have you had this problem, too? Is there something I do wrong? The only white glue I know is wood glue. It looks the same as the stuff, you use. Maybe it is the wrong glue? Sometimes it's difficult to find the right articles here as we neither have your shops nor your brands and don't forget the translation problem... Or maybe the acrylic paint was too cheap?
@HenryTinker
@HenryTinker 6 месяцев назад
You need to use a PVA glue like mod podge, I don't think a wood glue would work with acrylic paint

You have really inspired me! I wonder if perhaps lightly sanding those waxed cartons would help the hot glue and foil stick better.
@WhereTheGnomesLive
@WhereTheGnomesLive 2 года назад
you don't need the foil to stick like that, once the tape is on and then the paper towel, the foil is stuck permanently. I don't really use hot glue anymore when I'm building. If you are building and need the foil to hold up until you do the next step then hot glue is helpful as an extra pair of hands but if you don't have hot glue just use a bit of tape to hold things until you have the foil where you want it.. again, once the tape and paper towel stage is done nothing will move.

@WhereTheGnomesLive

you have to mix in some water to make it easier to work with for sure. You don't want it too runny but runny enough you can easily pull the excess glue off the towel

Hey I love your work but have a question, how durable is the paper towel design, is it easily breakable?
@WhereTheGnomesLive

it's more durable than the clay. It's extremely hard to break apart once everything dries. It doesn't chip either which is why I like it more than other mediums

Is there anyway this can be done without using tin foil? I would like to make a more environmentally friendly faery house. Thanks
@WhereTheGnomesLive
@WhereTheGnomesLive 5 лет назад
sure, newspaper or rolled up fabric. The reason I use foil and nothing else is it cuts out the chance of mold. I used newspaper years ago and few days later when I went to change the design of a wall the newspaper felt damp behind the tape and clay. I knew then I would never use paper again. I live in a damp climate so that could be a major factor. I do know many people use it and don't have an issue.
@jacksnstaffs8293
@jacksnstaffs8293 5 лет назад
Thank you for your reply. That's great news! Yes I'm a bit worried about mould as I am in the UK, so also damp here. I wanted to use cardboard boxes and maybe rolled up newspaper but do you think it would sag? What if I used clay, like Daz clay? Would that maybe form things up once it has dried? I've been searching on RU-vid for hours trying to find an alternative to foil. I think it works really well but wanted to use something that would degrade.
@WhereTheGnomesLive
@WhereTheGnomesLive 5 лет назад
I don't think it would sag, boxes tend to stay strong unless you completely soak them with water and that won't be happening. I'm not sure was Daz clay is but yes, clay can be used as well.

Hi Three questions. 1) Is the glue you use with the paper towels just a wood glue ? and 2) if no fans, just in a humid room, how long would the paper towel one take to fully dry ? and 3) I want to add a small stump to a water feature but not be wet, is there a non gloss varnish or similar I could coat it with to still have it look real but be kind of water protective ?. I'd like the stump to look real without a gloss look to it. Cheers.
@WhereTheGnomesLive
@WhereTheGnomesLive 4 года назад
Hello :) 1) Any pva white glue (like elmer's) or tacky glue will work 2) I would say 24 hrs, maybe a bit longer for it to fully dry without fans. I could be way off on that, I always use fans or stick it out in the sun which dries it faster too. 3) hmm I've never tried it. Other people have told me they've used an exterior sealer, and others used a boat varnish, to make their builds weather proof, which works well but nobody mentioned the shine. I would suggest asking a professional at your local paint store if there's an exterior sealer with a matte finish.

Matte waterproof patio sealer does the trick for me, it’s usually used for wood porches and even roof shingles. No shine and a giant can of it cost me $10. I figure it would need to be resealed maybe every 5 years or so if ever....saw it at my local Home Depot and went for it, no damage all summer long. 😊👍

wow, I think you're commenting on the wrong video! I gave the supplies list at 1 minute or so into the video. I explain every single step slowly and clearly. I don't have a tree made out of Styrofoam so maybe... you looked at another video and commented here by mistake?

Do you use watered down Elmer’s glue?

Hi I really like your work I have been following you since 2016 I have a question that Fungus keeps accumulating in my house made from clay recipe that you provided but not when made with paper towels. Can you suggest to fix it
@WhereTheGnomesLive
@WhereTheGnomesLive 3 года назад
2 things come to mind, did you use salt? Also, did you let the clay completely dry before painting or sealing it? That clay has to be throughly dried before anything is painted on. I’ve never had any mould issues so unsure what to do to fix that.. maybe try google? I wish I had an answer for you!

Actually, you could try “Kiltz” if you haven’t heard of that, just google. I would paint that on the clay that has the issues but be sure it’s completely dry first. The clay will feel dry to the touch but could be damp on the inside still so as I do in all my videos, leave fans on it for a couple days. If you have sunny weather put it in the sun but bring it in when the sun goes down. Depending on how thick you put the clay, it’ll take a couple to a few days of drying.

@@WhereTheGnomesLive thank you for your reply I did use salt... maybe clay wasn't dry enough and I painted it next time I will be more careful.....

Hii...I have no hot glue gun..then what to use to attach the foil on the structure.?

Any strong glue. Not white glue.

I started by just taping it in with masking tape. Sometimes I still do. Faster than waiting for the glue gun to heat up

Is the tape used to hold the foil in place? Or to use to place the tissue paper on?
@WhereTheGnomesLive
@WhereTheGnomesLive 5 лет назад
all of the above but mostly because the paper won't stick to the foil unless you tape it first.

Is it light? Or have some weight to it? If it does have weight, what is the estimated amount? I want to make a fake tree, however it'll be for a cosplay and will go on my back
@WhereTheGnomesLive

the one using foil as the base and paper towel as bark is extremely light. You can make one for your back no problem

I haven't done it myself, everything I build is for interior purposes, but others have told me they use an exterior sealer to make theirs water and weather proof. I hope that helps!

I’ve never used paper tape before so I can’t tell you but try taping it over foil and see how it sticks. If it sticks good then it should work just fine
