Krause: First of all thank you for all the great videos. I have a comment on your video though. You state that EOM is the desired self-defense "go to" mode although this contradicts the BMS-Manual and I quote: "There are 3 Position Known (POS) flight profiles: EOM, PB, and RUK (aka Target of Opportunity - TOO). Each mode control at which point the missile will activate its seeker and what will be the FOV of the seeker. The most accurate mode is EOM. It will activate the seeker at 5NM from the handed off steerpoint with a 40 deg FOV. This mode should only be used when the location of the emitter is well-known-i.e., emitter position collocated with a steerpoint. In PB mode, the seeker will activate at 15NM from the handed off steerpoint with a 120 deg FOV. This mode should be used when the position of the emitter is relatively close to the steerpoint. In the last mode, RUK, the seeker is activated immediately after launch with a 120 deg FOV. This is mode is used for self-defense as the range is completely unknown." Here it states that RUK is used for self-defense where as EOM is used for more precise weapon deployments when knowing where the emitter is. Was it simply a mistake on your part or am I misunderstanding something? Also, in the manual it claims that RUK is similar to TOO although from practicing on F/A-18 simulations it seems to me that Target of Opportunity is actually PB mode and not RUK. Can you clarify on this as well? Keep up the good work!
LovesToSpooge77 all be-it knowledge on a different sim. (DCS) There is the mode (I suppose that it would be range unknown mode-where the target needs to die right damn now), which does exactly as it says on the tin Then there’s TOO mode, where you can have a little composure before fucking your head and getting out And then there is PB mode, where you know where the target is, and you have a waypoint as evidence
+pistonssssss DLZ stands for Dynamic Launch Zone and it's the indexer to show you the selected weapon's ranges including: Raero: The maximum straight-line aerodynamic range of the current weapon is displayed at the top of the launch zone as a horizontal hash mark. This is the maximum theoretical range of the weapon against a completely non-maneuvering target. If the target is above this line in the Radar format, there is almost no chance of striking it as the missile will have exhausted all excess inertial momentum by this point. Rmax: Maximum Range Cue - This position on the launch zone represents the maximum maneuvering range of the current missile. Note that Rmax is significantly less than the maximum aerodynamic (Raero) range of the missile. If the target is below the Rmax cue and the steering dot is inside the ASE circle, the SHOOT cue will illuminate , but will not flash. At this point, a shot may be taken against a non-maneuvering target with a reasonable chance of success, however if the target were to maneuver away from the missile within this region, it could still escape. Rne: No-Escape Range Cue - This position on the launch zone is between Rmax and Rmin. It is a dynamic range because it is based on target aspect and airspeed. Rne represents a window of range in which the target is unlikely to be able to kinematically escape the missile, even if it were to head directly away from the missile at that instant. When the target is below this point on the launch zone it signifies optimum launch conditions. Rmin: Minimum Range Cue - The base of the launch zone is the minimum range of the current missile. If the bugged target is below this line in the format, the shot should not be taken either due to any combination of FOD hazard, arming time, or physical/kinematic limitations of the weapon.
These tutorials are really great..! I am not a newbie but I still got a lot of fine details from this one which you would skip in the manual. I hope to see more tutorials from you, if possible, for a campaign server play. I am building my skills to be on a server one day.
Hi Krause, Another really nice video. You have to keep posting these things, you are doing an excellent job. You covered alot of the Falcon subjects, but would love to see more. For instance, and perhaps you had other requests on this, it would be awesome if you could post a few campaign missions, where we could essentially watch an expert put all this knowledge into practical missions while working with the AI. There is alot of stuff I cant really understand, like what it takes to complete an objective in a campaign sortie, how to effectively use your element and wing, how & when to approach different objectives. As someone that literally learned BMS from scratch using your videos, I feel this is the stuff that is lacking to have an even better understanding of the simulation as a whole. Oh, and the JSOW and JASSM tutorials, but thats just personal preference, I love those bombs for some reason and would really like to know how to use them properly. Thank you for all your hard work, your tutorials are gold mines ! Cheers.
Amazing tutorials, man! It's helping me to dramatically shallow my learning curve on this sim, being new to it and all (never flew falcon before, only dcs/lock on series).. But, u gotta admit, that SA-4 killed you, didn't it! hahaha Keep up the good work, man!
@wolfstriked It is a button you must bind. I'm not sure what the default binding is - but go to your controls and look under HOTAS controls on the far right column. DMS Down does a variety of things, but the most common function is to switch sensor of interest. What SOI is is explained in this video.
The DLZ is dynamic launch zone, commonly referred to as an indexer, it is the bracket which appears on the right side of the HUD when you designate a target for attack with a weapon. The top of the bracket represents max range, the bottom min range. If the caret is below the DLZ (range min or rmin) , if you fire, it's a guaranteed miss. The higher and faster you are going, the better the range and probability of kill.
Hey krause thanks for the tutorial. I don't have bms installed yet, just bought falcon 4 during the steam sales. I admit I a little confused with the harm. I wondered if 4.33 changed things with this topic ? Or What 4.33 changed compared to your tutorial series ?
Followed the tutorial to the letter. I lock on to the target but I never seem to get target designation box in any mode. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Great video, i've been watching your tutorials and they are pretty good, helping me a lot, Thanks. Anyway, 2 questions, is the AGM-88 a fire and forget missiles?? it looks like it is, but in your first launch you keep heading en the direction of the SAM, so i thought maybe not a fire and forget, maybe you have to keep it in the HADs 'bubble'. Other question, do you have o have you think of doing a SAM evasion tutorial or something like that, just in case i'm not carrying enough HARMs XD!!
Questions regarding when you target the SA-2 as Position Known:PB. -Does the SA-2 work similarly to the SA-3? Is there a separate radio antenna/radar that it uses for targeting or can the launcher also track. -When you are setting the Steerpoint as your target, recon->select STP->accept do you always select the radio antenna. -Will that effectively disable the SAM site until they can replace the damaged antenna?
I'm a newb to simming and I just started a new campaign. The first mission happened to be a sead mission so I check this video to learn how to use HARMs. Fly to the target and try to shoot... Why is it not firing... re check everything... Still not shooting... Watch the video to check if I did something wrong... A few minutes later realize I didn't have the master arm switch on(That was my first sortie where I did eveything myself from the beginning)
@Traceless0815 Make sure you on he SMS page you powered on the HARMs. Also make sure you hold down the pickle button for about 2 seconds, otherwise it wont fire.
Hi Krause, nice video, i have 2 questions: 1- Does the AGM88 behave similar to mavs? For instance, once fired, will they autonomously track the target (so i could turn and go defensive) or will i have to keep tracking it with my sensors? 2- Is it possible to track and fire multiple missiles in sequence? ( e.g. I have 3 radar contacts in range and pickle all together before one of the missiles impact) Thanks
sorry if this is a dumb question, but does the target need to be actively emitting in order to get a hit in any of the POS modes? my first impression was that INS/GPS would guide the missile to the target steerpoint, but i havent had any success against a non-emitting target .
it helps, real wild weasel tactics( that is; flying in to spike it with your own aircraft and then shooting one down their facehole) have kind of been weeded out, it's risky and causes aircraft and pilot attrition. More commonly what you'll see is groups of aircraft firing HARMS into known areas, or former sam ambush hot spots. The enemy is well aware of anti rad missiles, so both passive systems and tactics have been developed. In Vietnam it was common for a flight to perform a weasel flight underneath a MIGCAP in advance of any ground operation, then out in the second tier was the sherk flight. The best weasels generally sherk'd whatever was trying to kill them, or their wing-man~ and these tactics changed greatly both the development of 5th and 6th gen, or next gen anti sam a2g weapons, the tactics in Vietnam, and how we went about it in desert storm. Passive systems defeat most ground threats for attacker aircraft now, without the need to kill them. When that arises aircraft like the growler can basically kill anything ground based except a battalion of s-4000's, keep in mind that is so far down the OODA loop of logistics, because before a conventional aircraft has to engage SAMS in a daylight flight situation you have the f-117 family of jets, you have the system fusion of the f-35 and jSTAR and AWACS which can render most ground threats highly exposed and you're not going to see many flights just hazard into a SAM ambush like we have in the past because our Recon and information gathering has advanced light years beyond what is known publicly.
krause what were you flying that let you mount 4x agm-88s? I went through the roster yesterday and I'm pretty sure all the f-16s in Bms can only mount 2x, and even more, so many of them can't mount the HTS at all. I'm wondering because I am building a campaign and it would be helpful information. Be well!
Hi Krause, I have a problem is in the HUD it says HTS and not HARM. I locked the target and when I try to press the pickle button nothing happens. Do you have an idea why?
I'm in this mission, where I come up on three "10's" on my RWR. I as I get in range I shoot both my Harm missiles on two of them. All three of them are blinking red wich means they are firing. But i get no warning tone in my cockpit. 2 minutes later it get hit by a missile. Do they fire a missile that does not get detected by my RWR or give no tone? its a bit wierd.
I can not use the PB mode, because I can not see the number of the steerpoint (designated as target, data cartridge loaded) on the pre launch screen. The only one difference I could realize that Krause had IP on his DED and I still have STPT. Does anybody an idea?
How do you get four HARMs on the F16? I know there's some discussion about it being realistic or not, but I'm still curious to how you do that. I can't manage to mount more than two HARMs.
Now at 11:23 "can select targets" I CAN'T i press the botton "radar designate target" but this not lock the target, only temporary while i hold press the botton
Hello, i have a little problem, i hope you can help me. :) I start the Harm Tutorial. i made the same like the tutorial. Set the HAD, get Cursor on the Radar, selctet it and get in range... But when i press the Missile Fire Button, the harm don't want start. What is the Problem?
Do I have to maintain the lock to the target untill the harm destroys it? If yes, what do I do if a SAM shoots at me while the missile is still heading towards it? Last question. Which of the three modes you've talked about would you recomend to use to a noob like me? (Sorry for my english, if there's anything wrong)
The AGM-88 is a so called "fire and forget" weapon. Lock target, fire and forget the weapon. Similar like AGM-65 (Maverick) and other weapons that can track the target independent.
Hm, where I can read more about that? Is those parameters based on some real data about that weapon? 7 miles seems pretty huge distance... So, if a SAM pop-up into the air less than 7 miles away from the aircraft HARM's are useless?
yes they are but i,m not talking about it i,m talking about if somebody can make a tutorial how to install the theaters i tried to do like you said but i can,t find the thaeter inside the game after i do the process; you understand now?
Nice tutorials man, in this vid however you confused Equations of Motion (EOM) with Range Unknown (RUK, also known as Targets of Opportunity, TOO). EOM is the most accurate mode with a known threat, RUK is the one to use when the defecation hits the oscillation!
Sure, I know that. Saw some wild discussions about how it would be useless without the droptanks and so on. But i noticed that your F16 in this clip wears four HARM:s during the briefing, that's why I was wondering.
You'll have to find the original game Falcon 4. Either torrent it or buy it. Then go to BMS official forum (just google it) and download the latest version of BMS (currently is 4.33.1)
Someone with more than a few brain cells to rub together that values the fidelity to the complexity of the real deal modeled as closely as possible on a computer.
Nope, that's just how the SA-10 works, you will not get a missile launch warning OR an active missile spike on the RWR. If you get SA-10 nails on the RWR, you need to immediately go defensive and start terrain masking. The only way to kill an SA-10 safely is to terrain mask, pop up on it, shoot your HARMs/CBUs then resume masking. It is an extremely deadly system.
I'm missing U're instruction on preplaning atacks, target importance,.... on U're own. In SP campaign HQ is so fuc... stupid. and causing war go for ever. Like in real world where goal isn't winning war fast as posible with minimum losses so they are planing strikes so war never ends ;) Are U still in this, if so is it possible to join U on net?
For the sake of armchair pilots like me who just want to fly around and shoot things up, without at stick I wish the avionics could if wanted be set to easy like in the Allied Force game. Could that be done by the creators of the game? It would make it a better game I think. As for now I consider the learning curve of this great game too steep :/
