actually the range of the radar is 160nmi. zooming in or out does not alter the range, just the filtered picture you get. the correct term for the shape of the radar beam would be a cone. If you already locked a target, you will not loose that target if it dives below your radar elevation envelope. The radar will look for the target in the last spot it saw it every so often and adjust elevation if necessary. It is of course always good to have the elevation set though. The radar does not interrogate. It scans through a database file on how different aircraft look like on radar from various angles and tries to find a match. If there is a clear match it will display such a match. The radar gets better resolution if the contact is closer. In the real world, things like exposed engine turbines through the air intake can create a good giveaway because the radar can actually count the turbine blades, although I doubt that's modeled. You don't have to use the FCR for the amraam. You can fire them in boresight mode. Not advised though. The bracket thing is actually called the dynamic launch zone. Or DLZ. The circle of the missile shows valid firing solutions. It's size depends on range to target. If you're at close range, the circle shrinks because the missile can not turn in time. Any solution in which the small circle is within the larger one is okay. If you want to give the missile the best amount of energy, not wasting any for initial turning for intercepting, then you want that small circle dead center in the larger one. You don't want the target on boresight. You want the intercept point of the missile on boresight. The amraam doesn't need radar guidance. you can just leave it be and it will proceed to the last known intercept point and turn it's radar on. You will likely miss, or hit something else. The F-16 can engage multiple targets at once, just need to have them softlocked. When softlocked, you can use tms right to cycle between the targets. That is best done not in tws mode, as cycling through the contacts can take some time. You didn't go over the missile timer. All the MFD labels are showing what the current state of something is. If you click cool, you disable the cooling as the missile was already being cooled.
It was very helpful. I was training in a instant action scenario and this cleared all the doubts I had and why I was having issues with my locking, radar and missile. Thanks for the video!
Nice tutorial. You explain things in a coherent and clear manner and don't ramble which is unusual for many people who make tutorials. Your tutorials are also pretty much the only source for people new to Falcon series, at least that I'm aware of. Keep up the good work.
Have truly enjoyed your videos and have BMS installed but totally had no clue how to operate weapons. (Can barely fly!) All the reading in the world did not help. But watching your tutorial gives me easy information to try. Managed to find out what TMS was and mapped it to my stick. Thank you.
Great tutorial and a excellent job making this video. Was playing last night and ended up getting 4 kills on Falcon 4 AF, all because of the info I got from your video. Just ordered my TrackIR 5, cant wait for it to come in. Keep up the good work.
I am a beginner to the f16 and I find the details extremely useful. I think probably the only people who don't care are the ones that probably would enjoy a game over a study sim.
Hey krause good tutorial as always Just a small note. A decent reason for a fox 3 long would be to force an enemy into a defensive posture so that they (lets assume a russian radar semiactive radar missile) would be forced to break lock while you press up closer to them for the kill
just in case anyone is wondering if i may add, AMRAAM stands for Advanced Medium Range Air - Air Missile. and the HUD modes MRM and SRM stand for Medium Radar Mode and Short Radar mode. Awesome tutorial btw :)
@Shurryy Keep in mind if you hold down TMS up it will focus the radar beam on a narrow area of the sky which can allow you to acquire and lock onto a target quicker. Also consider the geometry of the nose while using the radar. If you are at high alt, and nose level, it will be difficult to lock onto a radar contact which is low - you need to aim your nose at the target. It's a search light, not a solid wall that comes out from the nose.
Yeah np glad to help and yes Bulls-eye is a lot simpler then you think. I'm not the best at BMS just got into it my self but from my years of sim experience I feel I can safely say bulls-eye is a predetermined location. When someone calls out bulls-eye 235 095 you then want to make your HSD on the MFD your center or interest and slew the cursor until it reads at the bottom left 235 for 095. You now have the location of what ever was called out.
You've done a pretty awesome job with these videos of yours. I could technically restart playing F4 just by watching your tutorials. :-) For Example, you showed me why the wingies were not shown on the right mfd (sorry forgot the acronyms) :-) Anyway this about the IFF is absurd. Anything is better than the nothing we have now.
Good toturial like and subbed from me.However they could be better if you had used some shapes and symbologies to explain better the radar.Keep up the great work because there arent a lot of toturials for falcon and is a little hard for us the newcomers to understand fast the f-16's complex systems.
@Squirrellicious Cursor slew (default keys are arrow keys) then press TMS up (default numpad 0) to lock onto the contact. Numpad . for TMS down - which unlocks the target.
Dear Fusionprogamer.... THANK YOU!!! THANK THANK THANK THAAAANKKKK YOU!!!! Im not kidding i was going CRAAZZZYYYY...reading manuals and stuff..Pressing page down...Didnt work.....In the Setup i was looking for "locking" :) .I always could be able to lock on in the Dogfightmodus.... omg thank you again :D Now i will have alittle bit more fun with that ultrareal sim :)
Excellent, thank for your work in preparing these, would like to get back into falcon, but don't know the best simul. if BMS or other, and need new computer.
Excellent tutorial! Although I do have a question that I think someone could help out with. If I select the dogfight mode and setup a team furball and all that good stuff I can only track my enemies for the first few seconds, later on everybody kinda scatters around and they're all over the place, my FCR is constantly blank and no matter where I fly I just can't seem to reacquire enemy jets. What can I do to locate my targets more easily?
@n00p3 The radar gimbals the seeker head of the AIM9 toward the radar contact, otherwise the seeker head is just centered in the HUD (the diamond). So if you were to launch, it would only be effective without lock if it was relatively centered in the HUD and you heard a tone. I mean there's always a chance it will acquire after launch if you just pickle it off, but for best results make sure the radar is locked onto it.
Hey Krause. I love your Videos and i learned a lot from it. But i have to say that the maximum Gimbal of the Aim9 in HMCS mode is much higher. Normally the seekerhead is bound to the radar. So the limitaion in your video is the radar cone! If you want to use the full gimbal of the aim9 you have to decouple it from the radar. Go to the SMS page when the sidewinder is selected and press OSB#18 (or 19... not sure). regularly it shows "slave". So press it once so it shows "bore". (not possible with every sidewinder i guess. But definetly with the aim9x and also the IrisT) The Sidewinder is decoupled from the radar now. So when you select any target on your radar now the sidwinder will get no lock on it. But you have a much bigger cone for your seekerhead in Dogfight mode with HMCS. (around 90degrees off boreside) ........ It is also possible to decouple your Amraams, but i didn't figure out the advantage so far. Also don't forget to cool your seekerheads before you fire your heaters (also SMS page). (In Dogfight mode they get auto-cooled) Sorry if you already know this stuff. But then at least it might be helpful for other people who watch this. Keep it up!
+Anaximander29A -Hi, I bought the standard Falcon 4 (boxed version 1.01) a few days ago but there are severe graphics problems on my high-end Win 7 PC. I've juggled all the graphics options without success and am on the verge of uninstalling it. I know it's a 2005 sim so maybe it won't run on modern hardware? Any suggestions/advice/death threats etc?
Tungsten Kid yeah, go to www.bmsforum.org/forum/content.php, make an account and donwload this: www.bmsforum.org/forum/showthread.php?15666-Falcon-BMS-4-32-Full-Installer-(Base-plus-U1-U6) then download update 7 from the same page. Falcon BMS is a complete overhaul of Falcon 4.0, which works fine with newer operational Systems like Win7 / 8 or 10. But during the installation you need the path of the original Falcon.exe, which you have now. (you need it due to copyright issues). You have a better version of Falcon 4.0 then, with clickable cockpit and some realism upgrades and much more stuff. If you have any more questions or you need some help to get into the "game", you can contact me again here. PS: Falcon BMS is not an upgrade to Falcon 4.0 or anything like that. It is a complete independent program. So you can uninstall your Falcon 4.0. You just need the .exe as i said.
In real life there is a reliable IFF (identify friend or foe) system, the radar returns will show as RED (confirmed hostile), yellow (unknown), green (friendly). I actually saw an IFF system on an AWACS and this is how it worked. Unfortunately the BMS team didn't feel they knew enough about IFF to model it. You need to declare all contacts with AWACS (q menu) to interrogate them, and correlate RWR spikes with radar picture for situational awareness.
In the early sims it was like : "Alpha, Vector to Target 090". So that was easy, just heading that course. Im pretty sure Bullseye is not soooooo complicated like its beeing to me right now. ANYWAY: Thank you again for your answer. I finally locked on a Target today BVR and shot one down lol. :)
Oh and one last thing the latest Saitek stick is currently the X-65F. But the best stick on the market is the Thrustmaster Warthog and its only a 100 bucks more so if you have the money for a X-65F I suggest spending the extra 100 on the Warthog. Oh and Track IR HELPS A LOT. I had a lot of trouble getting mine working at first but I love it now and couldn't fly without it.
Hello Krause. Your Falcon BMS Tutorials are awesome and i've learned a lot from them. Can you please make on on the usage of JDAM's? Thank you for all the videos and keep up the good work.
HOTAS TMS UP. You can find its key stroke in the manuals that come with BMS or by finding it in the list of controls in setup. Also it may sometimes be auto mapped to your HATOS (joystick) POV 2 up.
Hi Tanit, awesome tutorial, a real treat! I am looking for more detail about the AIM-120, but I am struggling to make sence of the manuals. Can you go into more detail about weapon settings, M/F poles, how do I know when the missile goes active and I don't have to keep the target tracked (it was clear to me in AF, but not in BMS), timing information... If you could do that it would be amazing, thanka a lot
Great video, sure it helps a lot the newcomers to the game and to the Viper World! One thing i'd to like to ask you is, what is your setup? Standard PC, HOTAS, plus what? how can you have a HMCS? Thanks a lot, subscribed!
Great video; I D/L'd 4.32 and updated to patch 7, but I don't know how to TMS- I bought Falcon 3, then 4.o two days after it came out, but I left it for many years. Trying now to relearn the sim.
Ctrl and the arrow keys if I remember correctly. I am a total expert at this but I still like to watch these from time to time as they are by far the best tutorials.
Excellent tutorial, dude. This helped me a lot, especially about the AIM-120. But I have only one curiosity: How can you move the camera so smoothly? It's just like the natural head movement. =)
Great video, but I'm surprised you didn't cover how uncaging the seeker head permits stealth attacks without using the radar. That's always fun if you can sneak up on people.
This is great to watch and informative. I have F4;AF and have yet to play it as i dont have a good enough joystick, also i'l like to get Track IR to look around the cockpit, but cant do that in AF as its not 3D and BMS looks so much better, so i've put a bid in for F4 (original) on ebay, hopefully i win it and i'll get BMS. I see that F4 comes with a 600 page manual similar size to the manual for AF, but for AF i have to view it in Adobe, and whilst doing a training mission i cant pause in game and exit to read it on Adobe, which means i have to print out a 700 page manual. But with F4 the manual is printed as a book, which i'd be getting if i win this on ebay. What i want to know is, are there training missions in F4 BMS which are done in conjunction with the F4 manual like there is with AF? i feel doing that and watching these vids will help a lot. Also what joystick should i get? and Track IR? thanks to anyone in advance for info!
cns180784 Don't bother buying an original copy of F4.0. BMS only needs the executable which can be found readily available online and doesn't actually use any part of the original F4.
Christopher Doyle Bollocks oh well, already bought it lol. But i like it, nice big manual and big map of korea. When i feel like looking something up when im offline i can have a read of the manual i got with F4. I guess there are differences, small ones i'd imagine between this F4 manual i got and the BMS one but at the end of the day, its still the same aircraft. So should be mostly the same content in both
These tutorials are outstanding! Just FYI, the Bear is the Tu95, not the Tu89. The planes you were shooting at look like either a Tu16 Badger or maybe an M4 Bison.
Krause do you have any intermediate tutorials on weaponry I'm brand new and though your vids are cool to watch and learn you're saying things, or are a points that I don't know. I love the game and want to learn
