Fantastic. In South Africa we call the lanner Edelvalk, which translates to Noble, or Elite falcon.
@kevinparker461
@kevinparker461 2 года назад
And the French call it a ''Coward'' or ''Villaine''. In fact with no definite proof of ''Horus'' being a Lanner i would of thought it more likely to be the Barbary (Falco peregrinus pelegrinoides) a sub species of the Peregrine. And i don't see any civilisation would have any bearing on a Falcon or otherwise. Given a choice of flying a male Peregrine or female Lanner at partridge it would be the tiercel Peregrine every time, i have not got time to waste on a doubtful performer.

Love Lanners. Also there is a big difference between a passage Lanner and an eyass Lanner. Some of the most enjoyable longwing hawking I've seen was with passage Lanners in South Africa. Some of them are very hard hitting hawks. They are also great when flown in a cast. Truely lovely falcons.

I cannot wait for this video oh my goodness. I have been desperately trying to find more on the various Lanner subspecies and especially info on how they differ with things like temperature tolerance, size, gaminess, hunting/flight style and so much more. It fascinates me that if you ask someone who flies a Peregrine what subspecies it is, they immediately answer "peales, anatum, british" etc, they know precisely where it came from and what that means for their falconry. I have asked those who fly Lanners and many have said something along the lines of "I'm not sure, I think her great grandmother might have been Italian? She's lovely though!" Moral of the story: I am thrilled and grateful that there are those who are doing this kindof research and putting it together in an accessible format. Thank you, and bring on the long videos!

Another interesting video, my female Lanner is a joy to own and fly to the lure. Look forward to more information on the species in general, especially the experiences of those who hunt them..

As a falconer who flies a Lanner and absolutely adores the species, I am so excited for this video! I do a lot of education with the public around our area with him, trying to educate people about them and about falcons in general. You are probably already going to talk about most of what I could suggest, but I am always interested in any fun/quirky historical or species facts as I love adding those sorts of stories into my own presentations on these lovely birds!

I'm Egyptian, and I love your work. I'm getting a Lanner Falcon myself by the end of this month and it'll be the perfect experience for me. It sucks to hear that they're expensive to get your hands on, they cost $95 here. Keep up the good work.

Great topic. I’ve read somewhere that passage lanners are considered excellent game hawks in South Africa or there abouts. Maybe hacking them would be the recipe. My first Brittany was accidentally “hacked” hunting with its brother for a month. That dog could hunt 😊

Amazing falcons hunt best along water holes , so I used my lanners and loggers best after a summer rain storm.starlings would come out to bathe.And we had some great sport.Also I have seen lannerettes flown at flocks old starlings like rook hawking .

I am particularly interested in how the Lanner species varies in colour and size and behaviour in the different areas of its large range. Having flown this tremendous bird for many years I find they have similarities and differences. I find them very smart and social. Many old books do not describe them accurately and therefore do this great bird a disservice, if you are able to explore this more I will be delighted. This is a great video I have it viewed more than once. Can't wait for the next one. The Tutankhamun stuff is terrific.

I love Egyptians,and I also love lanners. When I was drawing Horus that time I saw that Egyptians did detail of the head,especially the notch in the beak. And I have also done some paintings on Horus,as he is my most favourite god. I also like Egyptian paintings,the most part I like of Egyptian gods are they often bird-headed,for example Horus or Ra,as I love birds. I love studying ancient Egypt. Awesome video.

Thank you for this! I am spiritually guided to work with a raptor, it’s been a bizarre calling that has leaned in for a few years now and this year I finally decided to answer the call. I spoke with a couple of falconry teachers/schools and had planned to learn with them later this year. In my visions I am working with a bird that is deemed “difficult”, it will not fly with anyone else. I trusted the universe would direct me to this bird in time. A week ago I was approached in a crystal shop by a lady who recognised me from my channel and was excited to meet me, we chatted and for some weird reason I ended up blurting out that I am called to learn falconry (it’s not something I’ve discussed with anyone really, maybe only one or two people), she informed me her sister is a falconer, I told her my story about the difficult bird I’m meant to work with and it turns out they have a bird exactly as I described. It is a Lanner Falcon. I haven’t met her yet and I’m still not sure if she is The Bird, but that is what lead me to your channel and I couldn’t be more grateful. Your content is incredible, your passion obvious and I’m delighted to have this opportunity to learn from you. Did you create a follow up video about the Lanner Falcon? I can’t find another when looking through your listings. I’d love to learn more!

I hope I don’t offend but it was fun watching you geek out for 17 minutes. Your passion is so obvious. I am an apprentice and hope to get my first bird this fall. Fingers crossed for an American Kestrel but I am very curious about Lanners in falconry. What traits do they have that makes them recommended for beginner longwingers. Thanks again for such great content.

Lanner Falcons are usually very well mannered like Kestrels. They are easy to forgive, and most of them are fairly loyal like a kestrel. Of course as with any bird you must make sure your weight management is correct. But Lanner Falcons just seem to have a more easy going/less high strung disposition than many other large Falcons

I'm actually taking my test today, I already have a sponsor, I hope for a red tail but with the prices of lumber I might have to with a kestrel but I will be very happy either way.My sponsor breeds Lanners, Gyrs, sakers, Barbarys, Aplomados, Peruvian harris hawks, and hybrids.

My wife and I saw the exhibit in Seattle, can't remember the year, but probably 'at that time'... we're a bit older than you ;-) It was wonderful to see, with ones own eyes...BTW, the bald eagle, not the most beautiful raptor, kind of a bit 'brutal' looking, compared to hawks and falcons! This looks like it will be a really unique and powerful study! I look for anything that *you* think is valuable...but environment, natural prey and hunting style, breeding and raising their young, variations in the breed across time and geography. Yoi'll do it up right!

I read somewhere that Lanners will hunt naturally in a cast; not quite like Harris's, maybe a bit like Aplomados? I'd be interested to hear if that were true! I'm also interested in why you think a Lanner would be less "gamey" compared to other falcons. So many species that are great hunting birds diversified from the Lanner, it seems counterintuitive that the Lanner would be as lackadaisical as I've heard them described. I usually think more Buteos for that, not falcons. It will be great to hear about the different subspecies, as well. I'm very much looking forward to your video!
@benwoodrufffalconry
@benwoodrufffalconry 3 года назад
Yes both in the wild and in falconry they do well as a pair. And like you said, it seems very similar to how aplomados approach it. I have never flown a cast of Lanners, but I have known several people who have done so with great success.

I've always loved Lanners, and seen them displayed in falconry centres in England many times but never flown a one myself. But I'm thinking of getting back into falconry now I have more time and I would love to fly a Lanner this time round. Some Lanners do look like very different birds in the air as well as in colouring. The assumption seems to be that the ones that like to dive more like Peregrines would be more suitable to enter on game. But I would love to here what your thoughts are on some of the more 'floaty' lanners? Where do they come from? And What game should I try to enter one on? Your videos are really helpful btw! Thanks man.

Hi Ben... Do you have archives of "Life with an indian prince " by craighead brothers. It shows trapping, training, hunting of many hawks. Therein is the laggar falcon (sister of lanner falcon), same happening with the laggar falcon. Very underrated hunter. It is in rapid decline due to various reasons.

I have flown both Lugger & Lanner, Lugger harder to motivate to hunt. Lanners are easier but not as easy as a Peregrine. Mavrogordato's opinion is correct if a little unfair. The history lesson is interesting but has little bearing on the Lanner. I have never seen the so called trained feldeggi lanner fly any better than any other trained lanner falcon. Just an edge for people who breed & sell them, if you fall for it!

Why did I want to keep Raptors? Can't be sure. I wanted to see if I could care for something wild, to see if it could accept me. They aren't tame like a dog, and I wanted to do it right. One of my mentors said " If you're not doing it right, they'll die, or they'll f**k off". I think I've achieved acceptance from Star, my Harris Hawk (Or am I her human)? Because she has done neither. The Genus Falco contains some of the most beautiful animals on the planet. Now if I was God, and I'd just created the Peregrine, I'd think "good job" but if I was about to create another Falcon, I'd give it a longer, more graceful tail. The grey colour scheme was good, but let's get some pastel shades in there. And maybe make it smaller, so I can have more of them. Is that why we have Kestrels? Horace, my Kestrel, (Horace = Horus) always puts a smile on my face, but I still have work to dowith him, and he'll be worth it. He can't put a tear in my eye like Star, but he enriches my life. He's not a big Raptor, but what a beauty.
