Fall of 2021 had found me in eastern Pennsylvania, exploring a handful of railroads I’ve had on my bucket list for years. The climax of my trip was the Reading and Northern's Fall Foliage steam excursion, powered by America's Loudest Steam Locomotive, Baldwin Light Pacific #425. I chased the train on both the north- and southbound runs, so come along and explore eastern PA's beautiful fall colors and exciting railroad operations!

425 is a beauty, the 2102 is taking some of her attention now but the 425 is special.

Good lord I did not expect to see 425 moving this fast! Last I heard she was limited to a certain speed because of some wheel bearings, but she seems to be powering along just fine

Nice video, glad you had fun. I guess I'm spoiled as me and the dogs have been walking the rails here and watching the trains for decades. There's nothing like the sound of a steam whistle echoing down the gorge.

The engineers don't wave from the trains anymore, not like they did back in 1954.still get a tear in my eye when I hear an old train in the night.

A similar locomotive to 425 was involved in a 1918 wreck in Hammond Indiana, There were over 100 people killed when the steam loco pulling a troop extra crashed into a circus train.

Incredible shots! I’ll be getting lucky enough to see the 425 on its last runs before the 1,472 this November 5 and 6. I chased 2102 on its first excursion run during May, so it was cool to recognize some of the shots here. It looks like you lucked out with traffic some. I got stuck at that little traffic light too for a good 30 minutes

I actually blew her whistle (B&O Tumor Top 3 Chime at the time) and rung her bell and even flipped its bell! I have a bit of footage of her in Jim Thorpe running around the consist for the Lehigh Gorge Scenic. Less footage than I wanted, but she'll be back one day after her rebuild!

Glad you had a wonderful time in the Keystone on the R&N. I've been enjoying it and it's predecessor the BM&R since they started. 425 is a awesome loco and I am glad my favorite girl 2102 has returned. This whistle like you mentioned is a Reading 6 chime its from one of their G2sa Pacifics. 425 is so loud due to its "Star" blast nozzle. Doubt she will keep her title to loudest because 2102 was given the same treatment lately and the T1s as the late Jim Boyd said were the loudest locomotives ever around. They have a unusually long smokebox that acts like a echo noise chamber. So her new Star nozzle should make her even more exceedingly loud. So maybe she will break more windows from her exhaust than she did in 1987 in Hoboken NJ when the BM&R took her there!

Great video, would love to see the 425 myself eventually. She is loud because they really push her with all she's got for a light Pacific. However if I remember correctly, the bark of Frisco 1522 was something to behold.
@kackdackel9170
@kackdackel9170 2 года назад
Judging from available video material, the exhaust volume of the 425 may even be louder. I mean, if the regulator is full open and the loco is beyond 25ish mph, the chuffs disappear and it kinda sounds like a jet engine.
@pestilentwinds

I witnessed the 1522 first-hand. You could hear it from miles away. I seriously doubt that the 425 is louder.

So weird to hear someone say "Worlds loudest steam locomotive" and not be talking about 1522. Maybe one day she'll have that title again! Edit: Wanted to add that Baldwin just seems to've had a knack with producing these both very powerful and very vocal locomotives in the early 20th century, and it's really cool to see so many of them still going.

Awesome video! Thanks! I love the 425 and she's a beautiful looking and running engine. As to the "loudest steam loco" I have to say she may not exceed the sheer volume of noise from WMSR 734. They don't call her Mountain Thunder for nothing. This is the best video of the 425 and RBM&N trips I've seen. Love her Reading G class whistle.

CORRECTION TO COMMENTARY....THE JERSEY CENTRAL MAINLINE WAS THE OLDER LEHIGH RIVER BRIDGE CROSSING AT NESQUEHONING JCT (NOT J.T. JCT.) To Scranton, PA. Conrail had nothing to do with this bridge. The rails were removed on it by 1974. The CNJ's branch to Haucks was called the Nesquehoning Branch. It was not a mainline.

I'm glad I saw 425 in 2020, hopefully I can again before she goes down. 2102 is going to be amazing though, and given the expansion of passenger runs I wouldn't be surprised if they rebuild and press 425 back back into service.

There's a part on the inside of the smokebox that essentially acts as a muffler for sound. But with 425 and now 2102 that piece was removed. That's what makes 2102 and 425 the loudest engines ever!
